Marion and his innovative, run-based "Go-Go" offense would be a perfect fit with Iowa's philosophy and personnel, so if KF doesn't get Marion, he'll have made another huge mistake.

I think he was a fine OL guy, but he was so fucking bad as OC that his OL skills didn't matter.

Look at Tim Polasek, who a lot of people blamed for the shit lines for years, went back to NDSU as HC, and has that place back humming again. Turns out when your QBs suck and you run a stupidly predictable offense it means that even the best OL in the world is going to become a sieve.

If Brian had stayed as the Oline or TE coach and not been promoted to OC he’d probably be looked at a lot differently.

Personnel selection and recruiting whiffs were as much his undoing as anything else. I’m not sure what you can call that would work with Spencer Livingston Petras as your QB, Arland Bruce at WR, and a bunch of underclassmen blocking up front because all of your big time Oline recruits got perma-hurt or flamed out. (He, of course at least partially owns this too). Brian’s only decent QB was recruited by Greg Davis.


It was a death spiral of bad results, which lead to poor recruiting and retention that lead to more bad results. Then bringing in a QB that was a mostly functional “game manager” BEFORE his knee exploded that his previous coach was trying to replace as soon as his blue chip recruit was ready was peak desperation.


Lester putting together any kind of functional offense on the field with the pieces Brian left behind last year was pretty impressive in retrospect and so far I like the hire.

Even struggled mightily with the scripted plays. And it's not like they actually drew anything out from the defensive gameplan.

In hindsight, we probably underplayed how much KOK’s return was about mentoring Brian rather than actually coaching quarterbacks.

There's about ten of us college friends that get together every year for one home game. Next year it looks like a decision needs to be made between Wisconsin and OSU. It's fun to celebrate a victory and we're currently on a stretch of 6-0. I voted for OSU, because fuck...that would be a great day with a W.
