Kirk prefers to grind out wins no matter how ugly it looks. Won’t even consider having a highly efficient offense

You had a guy in Kevin Johns who had extensive experience designing and calling offenses at a P5 level. And, he was successful at many places that were hard to recruit and lacked resources. Johns also had extensive experience in the Big Ten which would have been nice. Instead, we get this Western Michigan cast-off. Nice.
I agree on preference for Johns but he didn’t call plays for most of those years. It appears that the year at WMU, last year Memphis and two years at Duke were his play calling years. Until Elko, he was always under an offensive system guy who called plays.

“The belief is that Lester has a modern understanding of the way football is being played, but respects the way that Kirk Ferentz wants to run his football team.”

Kirk found his next Yes Man that isn’t going to do anything too wacky

Just days ago, we were dreaming of Johns and Continental breakfast. At least it wasn't Tim Brewster.

“While we can point to a nice 2021 statistical profile, six of the eight MAC defenses Lester faced that year ranked Nos. 92, 94, 108, 116, 122 and 124 out of 130 FBS teams. Against the only good MAC defense Western Michigan faced that year (Toledo, No. 36), the Broncos were defeated, 34-15.”

This hire is fine. Nothing much was going to change, even if we brought in Andy Reid.

They did put up 44 on Pitt who ranked 29 in SP+ in defense that year.

that's not a wtf

he studied a lot of pro offenses and understands how they work. could indeed inform him as an OC.
It also means he wasn’t involved in offensive game planning. Sounds like he ran the scout team offense.

Regardless of who the OC is, Iowa will run a Kirk-approved offense which, if all goes well, will be mediocre.

There’s a reason Kirk favors these retreads with dim job prospects and his fat turd of a son. They will be pliable yes men. It has been foretold - Lester will also suck, Iowa fans will blame him, and Kirk will get a free pass. Kirk is the problem here. For all the good he’s done, he’s becoming an annoying twat and I can’t wait for the day he and Fran leave.

It's just hard to imagine a worse hire than what Kirk Ferentz decided to do here. I guess Philbin would have been as bad or maybe worse given his age, but not much. The shitty Bears OC might have been close.

The whole thing just fucking sucks. He couldn't handle Brian being fired and threw a fit. Then when he did finally determine he wanted to be "aggressive" and hire Paul Chryst, that blew up in his face due to slow playing it. The AD and administration had green lit at least $1.5m per year for a candidate.

After all that, he chooses the most boring option possible. At a minimum, it does NOTHING to help you with recruiting until you see a full year of his offense.

The only things that really matters is 1) is Cade McNamara healthy and 2) Do you have another QB to make sure that if he isn't that Deacon Hill never sees the field. If the answer is no to both of those, it doesn't matter who the coordinator is.

Oh, and not to mention that there is about a 1000% chance the second coach added to staff will be Budmayr. Iowa basically gave Phil Parker a huge raise, Seth Wallace a raise and job title change and then traded out Brian / Copeland for Lester / Budmayr.

Barf.
