Kakert arguing that this wasn't a long process, because Kirk didn't actually care to start until after his boy coached his last game. Just not sure lazy over slow is much of a defense.
people joked about Kirk trying to retain or re-hire Brian, but it does feel like Kirk didn’t process the need to replace Brian until after the bowl, like if he didn’t do anything it would reverse Goetz’s decision

Kirk was being honest when he was asked about what he was looking for in a coordinator, and he waxed philosophical about having character and being a team player. He was never looking for the on paper most talented offensive coordinator he could hire. He was looking for the guy who he felt "fit" the best, and for whatever reason, that was Lester.

Kirk is at a stage in his career where winning is clearly less important than doing things his way.
Agreed on philosophy but scheme wise he could have gotten a Chryst lackey or Doug‘a guy LeVar who probably gladly would have run what people think is KF’s offense.

I don’t expect it’s going to look exactly like what he had at WMU but I also don’t think he was down to him and Johns (same style) to force them to change everything they’ve done.

What metric are you using? I googled “Kirk Ferentz win/loss record over the years” and my findings indicated you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The one thing I've learned is that college football is so very difficult to call offensive plays and requires Einstein level genius that only a select few guys that totally aren't mouth breathing retards are capable of doing. It's a sport filled with the best and brightest human beings on the planet and the most complex game known to man.

Maybe they will look like they have practiced on offense the first 3 weeks of the year.

This is like one of your nlp things that you repeat a million times and think it’s profound. There are successful idiots in every field. Meatheads that just have connections, meatheads that have industry knowledge and can connect with people, eggheads who fail because they can’t and some really smart people who are good at a lot of things. All kinds of kinds doug. Probably that way in the movie industry too.

But there’s been a ton of handwringing from you and others about being qualified and track record. LeVar is more qualified to be HC than OC.

Anyone else hearing what I am that the players are just as pissed off about this as the social media fans?

This is, in part, why recycling people is so common in all industries. It IS more difficult than most people think. Even with that, as fans of Iowa, we’ve been exposed to some real bullshit lately.

The process. The Kirk feet dragging. The unwillingness to truly address the offensive issues. The hire. Everything about this has been a back and forth between disappointment and utter stupidity. What a waste.

Where in the fuck have I said anything about "being qualified" ever when it comes to this? In fact, you're chiding me in the first paragraph for NOT thinking people need to be "qualified" and then in the very next sentence you are saying I am focusing on that? Don't be like Dougie, pick a fucking lane here, can't have it both ways.

Thanks for making my point though, there are all sorts of people that are idiots in all industries and far too often the dipshits that guard the gates think they can't let an outsider in or someone that has an idea or method that are different than others.

What I am saying in the case of the Iowa OC search, is that if you are going to just look at a bunch of standard industry types, then pick one with the better track record if you must be that inside the box. If not, then pick something different, which is why I would be fine if they would have picked Lavar as OC. At least it would have been something different and also given Iowa some factors at a high level position they have never had before.

Doesn't matter though, Kirk is the most old and old school of all industry guys and he picked someone that he clearly sees himself that is the definition of a mediocre bore on paper. I will still hope it works out well and Iowa wins a lot of games and goes to the new College Football Playoff. Go Hawks.

That is a fallacy. It of course can be harder than most people think, but way too often it is because upper management is lazy and scared and want to play it safe. They know if they hire an old stalwart from within the system and it doesn't work, then oh well not really their fault and just hire the next bore to take over and hope they get it right.

What does get people fired and leads to a lack of innovation and a general stale feeling in many industries is when someone does make an outside the box hire or move and it doesn't work. Then that is not the fault of the industry, that is the fault of the person that hired an outsider.

Since Hiawatha brought up the movie industry, it's why you see and have a lot of people bitching constantly that the movies all look the same at the larger commercial level. Something works, the rest jump on it and try to copy it until something else works and then they try that and often it's the same 50 people playing musical chairs at higher level positions doing it.

If you didn’t have the complaints about Brian being QB coach when he hadn’t played or coached there then I stand corrected.

I agree. Most people exist with a scarcity mindset.

You mean as in last year or whatever when they made him QB coach? If you are talking about that, don't remember anything on it but even if people did in that specific case it would be justified because Brian had been a complete fucking failure for a couple years at that point and giving him more responsibility was stupid.

I agree on preference for Johns but he didn’t call plays for most of those years. It appears that the year at WMU, last year Memphis and two years at Duke were his play calling years. Until Elko, he was always under an offensive system guy who called plays.
I thought he called plays the last 3 years at Indiana under Wilson?

Tim Lester might be a good OC, but we have almost no evidence of that.

He wasn't a good OC at Syracuse, admittedly it's not an easy gig. Then he did have some good numbers as a head coach who called plays at Western Michigan. No success at a P2 level.

Nothing about that resume screams he should be hired.
