Obviously, Fran needs to somehow get a transfer big who is an elite shot blocker. He's an offensive development wizard who can conjure a top 5 offense from a group of lightly recruited players. Fran hasn't had a good shot blocking center since Olaseni. I think Woodbury got too much credit for his defense and Gabe not enough. In Fran's two best defensive years (13-14, 14-15), Iowa was ranked in the top 35 defenses; those were Gabe's Jr/Sr seasons. The following year when Woodbury was a senior, they dropped to #123.

Fran needs to get out the checkbook this off-season and get the biggest baddest mother fucking shot blocker available.

Until Fran gives a fuck about defense this will happen. He is a great developer of talent and offensive coach, but he needs to hire a defensive minded coach and let him take over the defense.

Yes, but its more about intensity and effort than simply defense. His teams play good defense every now and then, but not consistently. This game is what frustrates me most about Fran. And no, I don't want him fired, and I know he is a solid coach with a good record. Nevertheless, his teams have historically gone on nice win streaks, and then inexplicably, they simply take a night off. That is what happened at NW. No intensity, little effort, poor execution, and no leadership. I just hope it doesn't carry over into the next few games.

Yep. They lost a lot of close games in the first half but were playing well down the stretch and were balanced. Got screwed in the MSU game to keep them out. The Big Ten ranked as the best league, that year, they finished 6th and two teams below below them made it.

The RPI was 69 because they played too many 300+ teams. In today’s system they’re probably in the 7-9 range. That was Fran’s worst shooting team by far.

The 2014 team also wouldn’t have been close to play-in territory in this system either. A bunch of Q1 wins and one Q3 loss.

I havent paid that close of attention but I do not know if I have ever seen Patrick with his base spread wide and down low in the basic defensive position most players can get into.
