Let's get some wait till next year shit going fellas.

Woody has balls.

Jok has offense.

White has another offseason to work on his jumper.

Gabe can only get better.

Josh has great hair.

Utoff can get stronger jk lol

Mikey can go a few months without missing a shot.

Clemons will be missed allegedly.

Need to start bringing in guys that can thug it up, or next season could play out pretty similarly.

Let me be the first to complain that our horrible non conference schedule is going to hurt our tourney chances when we are on the bubble.

It's all about the point guard in college bb.

Very true, but I also wouldn't blame him if he leaves. Might be hard to convince him he will get meaningful playing time if he wasn't able to get quality minutes the last few games with how bad Mike has been, and with Trey coming in.

there are 30 mpg from marble to distribute. mike cant get any more (pry less), and dickerson will get 20. with white swinging to the 4 more, josh will be out there as a 3rd guard so there should be an additional 20 mins for sapp at pg and jok at the 2/3. in fact josh will see his minutes drop regardless of fran-love if pete shows up like he did today

Oh I totally agree with you. I'm just saying, looking at it from his perspective, it might be hard to trust that he will get those minutes. I really hope he stays, and think it would probably be best for him, but I also won't blame a kid in his situation for looking elsewhere.

Good to hear on the accountability but I would expect nothing less than telling the media he plans to be here. I remember getting into an argument with Kakert because Jake Kelly convinced him he would return in a postgame interview. Despite that it was a pretty open secret he was going to leave.

Easy to forget, but Iowa was a really good defensive team last year until the end of the season. Then they morphed into this pure offensive juggernaut at some point late and were able to out score people despite playing lousy D. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see us turn into a more D oriented team with a post game and an opportunistic offense next year.

22nd in defensive efficiency last year, top 25 for most of the season and somewhere between 25-30 going into the Wisconsin game on 2/22. Ended 133. Incredible.

Wow, I didn't realize it was that big of a drop off. Obviously it felt that way, but it's crazy to see the statistics show how bad it was the last few weeks.

I am far less worried about Clemmons staying than I am about Fran growing a big set of nuts this year. One of the problems is I think he was too loyal, too nice and simply too stubborn. If he continues that pattern going into next year, then prepare to be shaking your head when Gessell trots out 25 minutes per game at PG, Oglesby plays too much over Jok at SG and White is out past the 3 point line swing shot faking and awkwardly driving most of the game.

Wasn't Eric May a pretty solid defender last year?
I am the guy constantly saying we won't miss certain players once they leave, but Eric May is the one guy since Fran has been here that I would have given about anything to have on this team. He would have been perfect on Iowa this year and was the tough defender that knew exactly what his role was.

Screw that, I'd take Ronnie Lester.

I am not the most confident of Fran finding his balls, but I wouldn't doubt him either. My guess is he doesn't want to have this type of experience again, and his original recruiting class he was so loyal to is gone now. Playing Jok so many minutes at the end of the season might be the first indicator. He always obviously intended to replace Gesell at the PG given he was all in on Ulis and now went out and got Dickerson. When it came down to crunch time, he didn't have Gesell in there running point and had stripped him of it last year as well.

If McCabe would have made like four more threes this year in crucial spots he'd be another in a long line of senior success stories for Fran and be a hawkeye legend. And we'd be gearing up for a (real) first round game instead of talking about this shitty game.

Either way, this is going to be a very interesting off-season. Hard to believe that if nobody transfers and they somehow get Atwood/Lee, they are going to have even more of a minutes crunch next year. They would run 13 legit scholarship players deep.

No way that happens unless Meyer is fine with never playing and Ellingson wants to redshirt.

I love Fran, but I think he could benefit from not having 10-11 guys who can possibly contribute in big ways on any given night. It takes out some of the troubles caused by trying to find the guys/combos that are hitting and those that aren't, and the prolonged cold stretches it can sometimes cause. One less thing to worry about will go a long way, IMO.

Still, the rotation probably won't be significantly smaller next year, if at all. But every little bit helps, I think. I think Dickerson is the only guy they're bringing in they expect to count on right away. Ellingson and especially Uhl may see minutes, but not to the degree McCabe, Marble and Mel did this year. So it's probably a net gain in terms of allocating minutes even if 11 guys play every night.

Recruiting better and different type players wil be the key for Fran. Iowa needs stronger tougher guys at every position. He's not dumb and has to realize this already. Yes I'm Captian Obvious.

If Iowa is going to have a luck swing, then one thing that might help that along is they could be a good outside shooting team next year. Oglesby finished this year over 40% from three, Jok can shoot, Uthoff can shoot and Gesell should be able to shoot if he gets his head out of his ass.

The guys that could really swing it would be White finally hitting around 35% and possibly Dickerson hitting around that. Excited to have a quick, penetrating guard for next year. It was maddening watching almost every other team have quick guards that would tear us apart.

Minnesota, Illinois, Nebrantska, Michigan State, Penn State, Indiana, Michigan and others all had some quick guard that would drive, collapse the defense and cause a ton of problems.

Yeah I think there's a lot to be said for his original group of guys that came with him. But he wasn't afraid to go away from Mel even though he kept him starting and that was throughout the last 3 years. Really it's just Zach and he averaged 15.6 minutes exactly the last two years.

He obviously loves Mike and really wants him to be the PG he thinks he could be, but isn't afraid of hedging against that. Both with Dev and recruits. Josh is the other candidate for that but he hasn't been afraid to leave him on the bench either. A lot of his increased minutes this year came from other guys making mistakes.

I think you're going to see a heavy emphasis of getting back to basics defensively like after the 2012 season. That was the constant theme and focus and we went from 197 to 22 in the country in one year. Part of that was due to losing defensive liabilities and adding in Woody, Mike and Clemmons. We lose a couple of liabilities again this year and I think the defense has the potential to be awesome inside. Just have to get better on the perimeter and limit penetration.

Football = if you have 2 quarterbacks, you have no quarterback.

Rotations weren't the problem. We need a pure pg.

Saw a tweet about White only taking ~13% of Iowa's shots this year, and Marble had almost 200 more shot attempts than White. Crazy.

How great would it be if you have a PG next year who starts at the top of the key and simply beats his man off the dribble and draws multiple defenders with the option to dish inside to Woodbury/Olaseni/White or can kick it out to Gesell/Oglesby/Jok?

That is something that simply never happened this year outside of a very rare few times this year. Almost all of our offense came on curl screens and then being able to draw and kick off of that. Would be awesome if Iowa can spread the floor with shooters next year and have the PG just work people or finish when absolutely needed.

The crazier part is Marble didn't really force anything and his shots were way lower than they could have been.

The deceiving part of that stat is that one should only want White taking way more shots if he's shooting the shots he's good at, which is pretty much getting the ball moving towards the hoop. He's a dreadful jump shooter and we didn't need 100 more 15 footers from him. Still, if he can improve his jump shooting (spot shooting) anywhere close to how he improved his FT shooting then we'll really have something to talk about.

I don't think Marble is a real natural shooter either...He's improved greatly though

Man I fucking hated Gesell at PG the entire year except for a couple games. He was not a good PG. Pretty damn good SG if used the right way, but not a PG and can't believe he went 12-55 his last 6 games and missed his last 17 shots. I also don't understand how a guy that is around 6' tall and can windmill dunk can make himself so small when finishing.

Shooting woes transferred over to the FT line as well after shooting 80% in HS and last year. Not confident in making them so he avoids contact to try to finish.

Yeah I don't particularly like Mikey at the point in a half court set. I DO like Mikey as a safety valve shooter -- a guy you kick it out to when the defense collapses. He's proven value in that role, especially last year. I also like his ability to push on the fast break. But once it's time for the half-court offense I'd like to have other options.

The way Fran runs his rotations, I don't think this great depth is all that great. Certain groups lack chemistry and he tries too hard to get everyone playing time.

It's great if there are injuries, but I think the rotations hurt Iowa this year.

Need to hit the weights. White pro would a had 5-6 more rebounds last night if he could do ten pushups or pull ups

Did you see his attempts last night? Unless it's a runout or a backdoor lob, the fucker is totally discombobulated.

Why has no one mentioned that the offseason will not extend into 2015? Unless this is meant to capture both this offseason and next offseason, which would be weird.

Right now he's the definition of "combo guard". He can be much better at both spots and I'm confident he will. He's a tough kid and a hard worker.

If Iowa is going to be better next year, they need a PG to step up.

1. Gesell, by all accounts, is a hard worker. It's possible he could develop.

2. Clemmons, perhaps his issues this year were confidence/sophomore slump, but enough improvement out of him to provide what Iowa needs seems like a stretch.

3. Dickerson has to be as good as every Iowa fan that doesn't post on Halo thinks he is.

None of these are entirely far-fetched, but I don't know if any of them are safe assumptions either.

It's Iowa basketball. There are no safe assumptions.
