I doubt that we'll use more than one more 2014 ride, if that. To me this helps explain how widely (and, thus far, effectively) we're casting the net in the 2015 class. We're recruiting every position in that class and have gotten good feedback from players at every position. I'm not cheering Meyer's departure, but I'm happy to have another ride for 2015.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that we're done with announcements like this in 2014. And FWIW, AC tweeted this today:

If that happens, Fran definitely did him an enormous favor giving him that scholarship for a season. It might just make Stokes look good enough on paper to get him more free college.

It seems there's a good chance we haven't heard the name of the player who might receive a second scholarship for next season.

The part of the banquet article that caught my eye was this:

McCaffery still is working on next year’s schedule. As far as marquee games, Iowa will face Iowa State at home, Northern Iowa in Des Moines, likely plan an ACC opponent on the road and compete in a four-team, two-game tournament at Madison Square Garden with Syracuse, Texas and California. He doesn’t have any made-for-television games planned, however.

“Eventually, we’re probably going in that direction with the rest of our scheduling, but it won’t be for next year,” McCaffery said.

I take it that means we're going to see another home non-conference schedule populated by the sisters of the poor. There's no question Iowa's resume has been hurt by that kind of scheduling, with average RPI's below 275 for discretionary home non-conference opponents in each of the last two seasons. I hope they at least take that number up a couple of notches this season, for the sake of both the resume and the people who buy (or might buy) tickets. At minimum, I hope Fran is serious when he says they will start working on made-for-TV matchups for 2015-16. I don't know why it should take that long, but please, let's move in the direction of a little more interesting home non-conference schedule one way or another.

They can take it up a notch, but it isn't that easy as just snapping your fingers and making it happen.

Everyone knows the sweet spot of the teams in the 125-199 range, including the teams in that range. They are usually decent programs and they know they can charge a lot more than some team in the sub-300 range. I'm guessing that Iowa and Barta aren't always willing to shell out for those games.

As far as worrying about fans who buy tickets for these games, that should be the least of their concerns. How many more people are going to show up to see Top 150-175 Wofford, Pepperdine or Elon instead of Sub-275 UNC-Wilmington or Penn? It won't make any difference.

They are doing the right thing by getting in some high profile tournaments in November. Schedule will not be an issue in 2014-2015 with Iowa State, UNI, Syracuse/California/Texas, ACC road game (likely someone like Florida State/NC State) and perhaps one other thrown in. That is not an easy schedule and then you have to go play an 18 game Big Ten schedule.

Fran mentioned that in 2015 they are playing in the Old Spice Tournament in Orlando. That would be a great one and would definitely be flying over to see them play. Here are the teams in it this year....

Yeah he said he thinks they might be going to that but he's not sure. They didn't announce the 2014 field until Thanksgiving 2013 when last year's was taking place.

Those games are Thanksgiving, the day after and that Sunday. 2 games in the early afternoon and 2 in the evening. All on ESPN.
