A good OC that understands how to attack and manipulate defenses can make almost any style of offense look good. A bad OC that doesn't understand how to do those things can make any offensive system look terrible.
Brian has cut and pasted a ton of shit from other random playbooks….but he doesn’t actually understand how any of it actually works and how to make the offense go. He simply doesn’t have a gifted offensive mind

Unfortunately his father seems unaware or unwilling to accept this.

Kirk’s essentially given a random Halo poster the playbook and said “here, you call the plays.”

When was Bruce ever our big play specialist? Does he ever run a route over 10 yards? The dude is too slow to take the top off. He’s basically Tyrone Tracy.

It's crazy how many fans are still convinced he's good. Yeah, Spencer sucks but Bruce has had some brutal drops including one towards the end of the ISU game that could have made a difference. He also could have walked into the endzone if he didn't trip himself. He isn't the answer.

Iowa's never had great receivers but I don't know if it's ever been this bad. McNutt, DJK, Solomon, ISM, Brown, Hinkel, Tevaun, C.J. Jones, Brandon Smith, etc. were all at least P5-caliber. There isn't a single receiver on this team that was half as good as any of the aforementioned.
Idk how anyone can give any wr on the Iowa roster a fair grade. Charlie Jones was like the 4th or 5th option last year and he's currently tied for the conference lead in receiving TDs and 2nd in yards.

Well, there are the dropped passes and difficulty with running and not falling down. So there's that. But I guess he might secretly be really good.

I don't know a ton about football schematics or tactics, but it is has always been very easy to see a few things that trend with the Iowa offense, and unfortunately the bad things seem amplified under Brian.

1) An inability to connect vertical passing routes. To my eyes, this has most consistently been the fault of our QBs. Christensen, Vandenberg, Rudock, Stanley and Petras have all struggled with accuracy, and have all had receivers capable of getting separation. This has gotten worse under Brian, as receivers have not been able to create separation under his tutelage (except for Jones) and Spencer Petras is uniquely terrible.

2) The zone run blocking system is ineffective at creating lanes conducive to big gains. 4-5 yard gains are optimal, as Iowa values time of possession to the utmost. This works well when it works, and horribly when it doesn't. This has gotten worse under Brian.

3) An overreliance on the tight end in the passing scheme. This, again, is designed to maximize ball security and possession time (and again works well when it works), but minimizes yards-after-the-catch and big plays. It also minimizes options in the red zone and makes Iowa (again!) less likely to score.

4) Poor offensive line play in general. The elephant in the room. No one wants to criticize the Iowa offensive line, but it consistently lacks cohesion and consistently underachieves. Pass protection has always been an issue under Ferentz, and this has gotten worse under Brian, which leads me to....

5) The absolutely boneheaded reluctance to recruit an athletic quarterback. One of the few things that Iowa's receivers consistently do well is...block. One thing the staff consistently has is...athletic tight ends. Both of these strengths are cornerstones to effective scramble drills and yet Iowa completely negates their strengths here. It goes without saying that this has been amplified under Brian.

The problem is that the offense is essentially a giant game of keep away. We keep - you wait. And sometimes it works to the tune of a top-ten team.

But when you can't keep...everything just goes away.

Point 2 is incorrect. In general and with us specifically. We've had many chunk runs with KJohnson, Goodson, Wadley, Canzeri, Greene, etc.

Here's the Cowboys crushing an outside zone run for a TD against the Rams and broken down by Geoff Schwartz.

The rest stands.

This is it. He's also paid $900K to do this and devoted to it full time. It's embarrassing to be this bad at something one devotes their entire job to.

Brings me back to a quote Dane Brugler references often from his first mentor when beginning his draft evaluation journey 'just because a guy has a big title or check, don't assume they know what they're doing.'

my bigger concern is whether we really can consider him on the roster at this point
If he doesn't play against OSU, then I would say it's hard to deny he is done and refusing to play so he can save a year and transfer. It's just weird that we don't hear much about his injury or his status. KF was flat out asked about him the Tuesday before ILL as well as one other. He answered in regard to the other player (don't remember who it was) and didn't mention KJ once in all of his word salad of an answer.

I don't think it's a separation thing of late so much as a "we have a quarterback who can't consistently take advantage of separation" problem. Especially if the separation is occurring with anything past the second read; it's painfully obvious that Petras can't make more than two coverage reads in live action before he either (a) falls back to the checkdown, or (b) has to get out of the pocket, which in the Spencer Petras Experience means "fall over like a dumb fuck and hope you hang on to the ball".

2) The zone run blocking system is ineffective at creating lanes conducive to big gains. 4-5 yard gains are optimal, as Iowa values time of possession to the utmost. This works well when it works, and horribly when it doesn't. This has gotten worse under Brian.

This was a problem in 2017 too when we had a new-ish QB, was somewhat lessened in 2018, and was reasonably non-shitty in 2019 with an experienced QB and 2020 with an experienced RB and line. The common feature is a quarterback you do not fear downfield, which allows a defense to stack the box, bring extra blitzers, and make the OL look like shit no matter what it's doing given that they can't really play those kind of numbers consistently.

3) An overreliance on the tight end in the passing scheme. This, again, is designed to maximize ball security and possession time (and again works well when it works), but minimizes yards-after-the-catch and big plays. It also minimizes options in the red zone and makes Iowa (again!) less likely to score.

Guys like Kittle and Fiedorowicz want a word on this. (One suspects that they got a bit spoiled in 2017 and 2018 and went heavy-handed to TEs, but my strong suspicion is that the last three years is less a result of over-emphasizing TE production and more a result of Petras using the TE as a security blanket because he's incapable of reading defenses quickly enough to get through progressions.

4) Poor offensive line play in general. The elephant in the room. No one wants to criticize the Iowa offensive line, but it consistently lacks cohesion and consistently underachieves. Pass protection has always been an issue under Ferentz, and this has gotten worse under Brian, which leads me to....

You can handwave some of that away by pointing to "youth" and "shitty recruiting in the '18 and '19 classes", and also the problem that a defense that doesn't fear Blonde Forrest Gump at QB is going to be able to overpower any OL at will, but I'm not going to argue the point that the current OL starters are awfully shitty for a program that is built on the development of an OL from underrecruited two-stars to high draft picks.

To some extent, that's true. But even Stanley, nobody's idea of "athletic", had the processing speed to recognize danger, get out of it, and extend a play for positive results. Petras is, in all senses, a tackling dummy. Incapable of recognizing danger, incapable of processing fast enough to evade it.

The problem is that the offense is essentially a giant game of keep away. We keep - you wait. And sometimes it works to the tune of a top-ten team.

But when you can't keep...everything just goes away.

Dochterman (and unfortunately Howe) ripped on Brian and Kirk pretty good last week on their podcast. Basically called it horseshit that they know their current roster can’t run the offense to perfection like they want them to and instead of adjusting to the current roster they’re calling the same plays as if they have 11 senior starters. Every play relies on 11 guys doing their job to perfection to pick up 4 yards.

I see people complaining about Bruce and his limitations, but his problem isn’t his limitations, it’s that Iowa is forcing him to play towards his limitations. Bruce should be used on jet sweeps, bubble screens, crossong routes etc. Instead they treat him as a traditional receiver which doesn’t play to his strengths at all.

I think this is almost exactly what people were saying about Bruce.

It’s similar to the roughly billion posts of, “yeah, Spencer is bad, but why are people giving the line a pass?”
No one is giving the line a pass, everyone thinks they blow. Kaleb Johnson, a sensibly coordinated offense, and a competent quarterback would make them look a metric fuckton better.

Listened to it as well...sounds like they expect Padilla to enter the portal as he's on track to graduate in December.

Spencer and who else? Gotta be another offensive player the way Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz has the offense rolling
