You know what I'm looking forward to just as much? Actually going to a couple games and tailgating with friends.
Fine, I'll come on the Minnesota trip. Jesus CHRIST, everybody just chill out about it.

yeah, Goodsons fault there'd often be 2-3 guys in the backfield before he made it to the LOS....
You’re correct but his vision was terrible and towards the middle Theu the end of the season he tried to break everything outside and he was a step slow.

Goodson? Outstanding? Lmao

Didn't he have more negative carries than anyone else in the country?
Sure but the line sucked and the opponents sold out against the run if I recall correctly. Yes Goodson missed some cutbacks and sometimes danced around but he was often in a really bad position. It’s not like he’s Bijan Robinson.

Spencer Petras is already mentioned in the College Football Hall of Fame

Defense should be much better this year with a stronger line to complement the LBs and secondary

What could their record have been with an offense that wasn't a certifiable dumpster fire? The "what was their record" crowd is the same one that must enjoy watching Wisconsin win the B10 West most of the time.

My favorite thing about the "it's a style of play decision!" argument defending the total offensive output is that it ignores something as simple as yards per play, which removes the "style of play" factor and just judges the offense based on what it generates on a play by play basis vs every other offense. Here's Iowa's offensive YPP ranking the last 10 seasons (out of 130ish schools):

2021: 121st
2020: 78th
2019: 84th
2018: 86th
2017: 103rd
2016: 98th
2015: 53rd
2014: 65th
2013: 84th
2012: 118th

I'm fine with Iowa's STYLE of play. The most annoying thing about Iowa's style of play is that it requires a fucking offense that can move the chains to wear down the other teams defense and not your own. Running the ball and playing defense can work great if you can actually do those things, here's Wisconsin's offensive YPP rankings nationally the last 10 seasons:

2021: 71st
2020: 102nd
2019: 18th
2018: 14th
2017: 31st
2016: 77th
2015: 87th
2014: 7th
2013: 39th
2012: 39th

They were top 40 nationally in YPP 6 out of the last 10 season, and that's with pretty average to below average QB play.

In the last 10 seasons, Iowa has only generated more YPP than Wisconsin in two seasons - 2020 and 2015. Oddly enough, those are the only 2 games Iowa has beat Wisconsin in over the last 10 seasons (that's only 9 meetings though because Iowa didn't play Wisconsin in 11/12). Do you think that's just a coincidence?

Iowa is choosing to play a style of football where they won't put up huge offensive numbers, and that's fine. But that style of offense still requires the offense to be EFFICIENT on a per play basis, and they're not, because their offensive scheme is massively broken and they have no idea how to use their talent even when they have it. George Kittle averaged about 2 receptions per game his Junior and Senior seasons - inexcusably poor utilization of one of the best players at that position in the country. In 2019 Iowa had two future first round NFL draft picks on their offensive line (and experience sprinkled in around them) - they ranked 98th nationally in rushing yardage per game and were south of 4 yards per rush.

So don't tell me "they were just young last year". No, this is a 10+ year long problem, and they've had plenty of talent over those 10+ years that they failed to get offensive production out of.
Great post.
I’m not a football expert but Iowa has some pretty severe schematic issues. Outside of obviously RB one would have a difficult time making the case that Wisconsin has been measurably more talented than Iowa on offense.

While it would be great to consistently “run the ball effectively” the 2016 team had 2 1000 yard rushers and they couldn’t throw the ball across the street.

Im kinda over the pre-season “we’ve popped the hood and have recognized ways to get better” BS from the coaching staff. They’re one or 2 blown games every year from bumping up a tier in CFB. Figure it out.

Someone on TOS said Keagan Johnson hasn’t participated in fall camp yet and others have said he’s been on and off since being held out for the bowl game for the same injury. That is pretty damn concerning.

Yeah, if this has been lingering since Dec and they still can't get it figured out this could spell very bad news for an already razor thin receiver core.

If true, we may have not seen the worst of petras yet.

An already weak passing game minus Jones and Johnson....yikes

Cover 3 podcast has a good breakdown of the West. They made it seem like Iowa would be the clear favorite if they didn’t play the 2 best teams in the East and that Petras guy

There was chatter a number of months ago that Vines was sort of behind in his development

that narrative seems to have shifted dramatically in the last 2-3 weeks

IIRC he was only behind because he’s been injured. He was impressive before his first injury.

I figured given all the BF hate on here that nobody would want a summary. Basically, he summarized the last 3 bowl games (USC/MSST/UK) and 2021 Purdue. BF felt USC game went about as perfect as he could imagine and has no regrets about the Kentucky decisions in the 4Q.
The part I really struggled with though is when he talked about the Purdue game. He highlighted how there was a play where the defender made the wrong decision and it worked in their favor which was the reason Goodson was tackled for minimal gain instead of Petras hitting Ragaini for a wide open touchdown. His argument was Petras did the right thing, that’s football, etc. I struggle to believe the top 25% of D1 QBs are sticking that much to the pre-read script on every snap. Ultimately, I would’ve hoped to read more about what he felt they could’ve done to get ANYTHING going on offense against Purdue considering plenty of other teams did.
I found most interesting that except for acknowledging improvement in the Kentucky game, there was basically no mention of the offensive line “improving” or “setting the tone” by BF in either article.

Here are the tidbits in a nutshell. Vines has been ‘going insane’ in camp. Keagan should be back practicing soon. JP probably announcing a top 3 of cuse, tenn and iowa tomorrow.

I actually was a little encouraged by it. It’s pretty clear there are plays there if the QB isn’t awful. I mean, the plays they discussed in the Purdue game, there are receivers wide open.

Glass 5% full: there are open receivers who a decent QB would be able to hit

Glass 95% empty: we will roll with the same QB who missed those open receivers.

Here's a summary of numerous purported inside info tidbits from both TOS.

- As mentioned Vines seems to be stepping up
- O-line is a work in progress but typical for this time of the year
- Dline is extremely deep and good (encouraging as the LB and DBs are loaded)
- Several reports that Kaleb Johnson is a stud and will be tough to keep off the field
- Best practice so far was today (Sunday)
- Keagan Johnson actually died last December and his double isn't up to speed/ready to play football yet
