If we are to buy into the narrative that it's Kirk's decision to start Petras, then we must also believe that Kirk is so fucking stubborn that he is OK with completely trashing the prodigal son's future of employment anywhere outside of Ferentz and Sons, Inc.

I'm not sure I buy the second half of that long, run-on sentence. Nothing about this scenario makes any sense to anyone outside of that program.

I refuse to believe that this is an accurate quote. No way.
Around the 9:40 mark….sadly

I encourage everybody to watch this, for at least the first 13 minutes…not sure about the rest as I threw my phone through the wall and didn’t watch the rest.

If Spencer just cleans up his fundamentals he'll no longer sail balls a few feet over WRs heads!

The defense intercepting an average of like 3 to 3.5 passes per game, and housing 1.5 of those, covered up a ton of warts - Petras being the biggest one, obviously - on the offensive side of the ball last year.

We're not seeing those crazy forced turnover numbers this year (so far), and its showing.

Despite a horribly shanked punt by SDSU (& great starting field position for most of the damned game) and two blocked punts, plus two interceptions, vs ISU, the Iowa offense has only managed 10 total points in 2 games this year. 1 game vs an FCS school and the other vs a shitty ISU.

In 8 quarters of football, against teams that they should have been at least 2 to 3 TDs better than, the points allocation to this point is; offense = 6 points, defense & STs = 4 points each.

Keep giving us this "Complimentary Football", Ferentz's. It's awesome. Just awesome.

It’s pretty toxic right now, imo. There are some unusually ugly feelings out there regarding a particular player and the program, if you haven’t noticed.

It feels like there actually is a lot of shit going on behind the scenes we don't know about. Is there any chance Padilla and Labas murdered a walk-on in practice?

And the team is circling the wagons to cover for them. Team building at its finest.

I think that the turnovers dropped off in the second half of last year and the W-L reflected that.

In case anyone was interested, it looks like it's almost $50M, Garta is a fucking idiot.

Nebbie just paid $15M to fire Frost for comparison.
And nebraskas coach had done jack shit and was way overdue to get fired. Kirk has done not much besides win relative to what would be expected at iowa.

he’s paid less per year than most of the coaches in the big ten at this point and he’s the dean of cfb. The fact that he has a high buyout isn’t some inexcusable contract feature

This is the worst I’ve felt about Kirk. I didn’t like the Greg Davis hire, but Kirk was right, they damn near made the playoffs. Sure it didn’t end how I wished it would have, but still an amazing season of complimentary football for Iowa’s style.

What’s going on now isn’t that. I think fortunes can change for the better VERY quickly in today’s game, Kirk’s instinct is to go HARD to HIS philosophy in the face of that. We all know that is true. Iowa is as selective as ever with transfers. The receiving corps is ravaged already, we have NO ONE coming in. You trust Brian to fix this? You think that is a high probability bet? We apparently have three of the worst quarterbacks (at least in the bottom 20% given Spencer’s career, and that’s giving him a nod for having shitty receivers, except Charlie Jones, obviously) in all of D1, and you real impressed with what we’ve seen at running back? They are at best fine. EVEN the offensive line hasn’t been in a great place. Great individuals, but are behind putting together units it seems. Have had some injuries, retirements, and leaving early for nfl, and that’s part of the deal, but no offensive linemen came in the portal. These are all issues, I can’t imagine trusting Brian to solve them, and they are in areas Kirk isn’t super strong in.

My hope his will to win wins out for my entertainment, but I think it’s a battle for all the things Kirk values about college football and coaching young men.

A path forward where you both retain Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz, and also recruit at a high level, is difficult to see.

This is without a doubt the dumbest and most stubborn that Kirk has ever been, but it isn't my lowest point with him.

That was easily the 2014 season and his decision to start Rudock again after Beathard brought Iowa back to with the Pitt game on the road and then won his start against Purdue.

It is the press conference during the bye week when the coordinators always give interviews and Greg fucking Davis of all people basically shouted to the world that he thought Beathard should start and Kirk instead went with Rudock against Indiana.

Of course they beat Indiana in a laugher because Indiana sucks, but then next week they traveled to Maryland and Iowa was about to walk away with the game at the end of the 3rd quarter and then everyone lost their mind and Rudock threw like 45+ passes and not a single rush in the 4th quarter and they lost.

Beat a shit Northwestern team and got fucking embarrassed giving up 50+ at Minnesota. Shit away the Wisconsin game at home and finally had the hilarious and depressing loss to Nebrantska at home on Black Friday in overtime in a game that Nebrantska had given up and Iowa handed them a victory that got still got Bo Pelini fired.

The year ended with the atrocity against Tennessee in that shit bowl game.

It was the first time ever that Kirk had to have an emergency post season press conference due to the perceived performance of the team going backward and finally Casey Beathard saved the program with the ultimatum.

Perhaps the problem is that Kirk doesn’t respect the opinion of his offensive coordinator this time. Wasn’t Ken also the voice of reason in the Stanzi controversy?

Yeah, that’s been bumped to #2 because nothing close to CJ is on this team. You’ll be here soon.

Iowa was 4-1 going into that bye week with the only loss being the bullshit game against Iowa State at home. If they start Beathard after the bye week, I think they would have finished 10-2 or 9-3.

This is what is frustrating about Kirk, and that is the games he has lost or flat out given away in his career due to pure stubbornness. We can all point to them pretty much out of memory. Western Michigan at home in 2007, the 3 games in 2008, Central Michigan in 2012, numerous Iowa State games, multiple games in 2014, a couple of games in 2020, one game last year and now a game this year.

It is what keeps him from being one of the all time greats and not just a really good coach.

I cant imagine the despair of my fandom- watching a 4 or 5 win season from this Defense and Special Teams with Petras and this offense buttfucking around all season

Actually, as I typed all of that shit, this year reminds me more and more of 2014.

Kirk really loved Rudock and I think would have absolutely kept him and never had played CJ Beathard, but the noise and pressure was just too much for even Kirk to ignore at that point.

I feel like we are nearly there with Kirk this year. The press conference today with him stammering around with no explanation and how uncomfortable everyone is and CLEARLY there being a split in the coaching staff says a lot.

What really stood out for me is when Kirk thought he was going to PWN whoever was asking the question about total scores and Kirk was like "uh wait, what was the bowl game score??" as if he thought they had actually won the game or had scored a lot of points and the guy responded back "20-17, it was one of the 17 point games" and Kirk's response and body language was basically "oh. oh shit that's right. fuck"

I love Kirk, but I think Petras in practice is just clouding his judgement. He likely looks really good and Kirk just can't believe that it doesn't translate over to the field and that if he just gets a couple of receivers back it will all be fine.

He's just flat out wrong and even he is going to run out of credibility soon.

Kinda seems like Kirk sucks at identifying QB talent and should probably listen to his OC when its a close call.

“And Petras threw 3 picks.”

Then Kirk did the “oh well that’s football schtick” like a real dumbfuck.

Great moments in Kirk Ferentz Press Conferences, brought to you by Case IH.

If he could only get out of his own way.
Yep, and he better do it sooner than later.

Someone needs to get in Kirk's ear and remind him that himself or even his son, Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz, are lucky to still have jobs. In a lot of other places and situations the stuff that happened with the 2007 City Boyz, with the Rhabdo, and with the racist allegations and firing of Doyle would have been more than enough to get all of them fired.

It's a miracle that they kept the team together after the former players turned on them in 2020 and had to fire Doyle. It's a miracle he pulled a couple of 5* recruits and kept winning at a high level.

If you tank a season over Spencer fucking Petras and let your program become a national laughing stock, we are in the era of immediate eligibility transfers, the transfer portal and NIL.

You have 5* Xavier playing on special teams, but if the vibe turns so negative by the end of the year, he would still have every program and $$$$$ waiting for him to play next year. Proctor hasn't signed shit. I'm sure Alabama would gladly take him next year and give him $$.

I'm all for giving Kirk leeway to get to the right decision here, but he is without a doubt playing a very dangerous game that I don't think he truly understands at this point.

We don’t owe Kirk anything. We have already paid him what we owe him, and will pay him what he negotiated if we move on. His past success does not give him the right to steer this program into the iceberg now.

Adapt or die, and I dont see him adapting or even attempting to.

College football is changing quickly, certainly. And ol Kirk is not one for change. I’m sure in his head he’s thinking, the more things change the more they stay the same. Except this time, unless they put more restrictions on NIL and the portal, they really are fucking changing in a big way. Kirk needs to put his NFL hat on and think about this shit. He’s earned his shot. I’ll be rooting for him.

This behavior KF is displaying about staying with Petras makes one think that his mindset is that he feels like his job is secure as can be because of his seniority (as the 'Dean of the B10') and the huge amount of the buyout on his contract. So he can confidently thumb his nose at the boobirds, & reporters with enough spine to ask more than softball questions, who "don't see what we do in practice", etc.

If that is not what is happening, then like has been said about today's football culture about winning+money+transfer portal, its very foolhardy to remain so stubborn. I don't give a flying fuck if Petras is the GOAT in practice, it obviously doesn't even come close to begin to translate to real action when the bullets are flying.

Now that we can infer that not all of the rest of the coaching staff is happy about Petras remaining the starter, it just makes the decision all that more frustrating and baffling.

That move was KOK’s decision
I assumed Kirk arranged the landing spot in Miami, if it was KOK's decision, why did he come back?

Either way, if this offense is as bad as what it's looked like the first two games, for the entire season, Brian needs to move on. There is no alternative, the offense is garbage and has been garbage for 4 of the last 5 years, there is no objective justification for keeping him on as offensive coordinator.

It's frustrating as fuck because with some of the defense/special teams units Kirk has put together, the last 5 seasons all could have been 9-11 win seasons with an offense that ranked 50th-60th nationally. Instead it's always been one of the worst in the country and made it a struggle to get to 9 or 10 wins.

I'd love for Kirk to figure it out and ride off into the sunset with a B10 championship, but if he's unwilling to pull the worst QB in all of FBS football, I'm not sure I can believe he's going to tell Brian he has to go. If Brian stays, the entire ship will sink, no recruits are signing up for this dog shit offense, and any valuable pieces will transfer out.

Sadly, this could also be him making Padilla/Labas look like retards as he was working his way up the depth chart. I know at least one was from Petrus, but don’t think we know for certain about most of the others.

If there wouldn’t be a greatly reduced negotiated buyout I’d actually be disappointed. And by that I mean “retirement.” Whenever he decides (or is told) we’re at the end. If he’s so stubborn as to be bought out I’ve no respect for him.

I'm just asking a question - what's the buyout? I honestly don't know.

We all agree Brian has to go and someone else has to take over on offense, what if Kirk is as stubborn after the season about his OC as he his his QB? After that game Saturday, I couldn't believe anyone would stick by Petras, I was wrong. What if we're all assuming the same about OC and are wrong?
i don’t agree that Brian HAS to go yet. Just start a different qb that is willing to use the whole field for fucks sake.
