I think it’s telling we haven’t seen many, if any, audibles this year. Even though most are just zone to the short side, it tells me that the OL is very far behind schedule. That’s pretty sad considering strong OL play has been the most noticeable Iowa football identity under Ferentz. It’s especially sad when you have 2 OL gurus on the staff.

The last few years it seems like we have been mixing and matching office lines. Seems to really screw with the players. I have no idea why they can’t identify a position for these players and help them develop there. They’ve had to bring the last two centers over from the DL. Last one worked out great and we’ll see on this one, but why the recruiting misses?

Lol, it’s not that iowa doesn’t know they are obvious with their tendencies. It’s that they don’t care.

The former would actually be less frustrating.

Staples with another hit on Brian/Kirk. From Today’s mailbag…

I’m starting to get some real “House of the Dragons” vibes to this season of Iowa football.

Kirk Ferentz = King Viserys. A relatively benevolent ruler who becomes defined by his inability to make the difficult choice until it’s too late and ultimately affects his legacy and offspring.

Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz = Prince Daemon. He feels entitled to the throne once the king dies but ultimately is at the mercy of the decision of the king. Deep down, he feels he could be doing a better job but is limited by the decisions of his ruler.

LeVar Woods = Princess Rhaenyra. The one who should truly be chosen as the heir but is surrounded by incompetency and family dynamics (i.e. nepotism) preventing him from feeling secure that he’ll one day be the true ruler.

Gary Barta = Otto Hightower. Scheming behind the scenes to keep the status quo and avoid any of the blowback from his decisions sticking to him. Ultimately, he will be front and center reaping the adulation when things are going well but slinks behind the curtain when everyone sees exactly how inept this team is and the difficult decisions that must be made.

In the end, it’s starting to look like the end of the KF tenure will be defined by his inability to either let BF completely run the offense how he likes AND/OR make the necessary changes to modernize this inept attack. Regardless, his blind loyalty and stubborn arrogance will reinforce that in his mind only he knows what’s best and will leave a stain on his legacy.

— Erik

This is brilliant, Erik. Daemon probably isn’t the best comparison for Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz, because there isn’t really a perfect complement for the Iowa offensive coordinator in the story we’ve seen so far through the series’ first four episodes. Daemon is ambitious and impulsive, but he has demonstrated some competence when pushed. Instead of letting his brother bail him out at the Stepstones, Daemon came up with a plan on his own to defeat the Crabfeeder. This incursion was the military version of at least five yards per play, which is vastly superior to the 2.8 yards per play Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz’s offense is currently averaging. (Good for No. 131 in the nation.)

A better comparison from Game of Thrones is probably Dickon Tarly. We don’t know what ultimately happens to Samwell Tarly’s younger brother in the books because GEORGE R.R. MARTIN WON’T FINISH THE DAMN THINGS. But we do know what happened to the less capable Tarly brother on the show. Randyll Tarly, the perpetually myopic patriarch of the family, refuses to bend the knee to Daenerys Targaryen. Even though Cersei Lannister is equally if not more evil, Randyll stays loyal to Cersei even though Dany has him at dragonpoint. Dickon, who could have succeeded his father as the lord of Horn Hill and extricated his family from a failed alliance, instead refused to bend the knee to Dany. This was the Westerosi equivalent of taking zero quarterbacks from the transfer portal this offseason. What was Dickon’s prize for his stubbornness? Dany’s dragon Drogon incinerated Dickon along with his father.

This. Guys in and out, and if they’re in 2 series in a row they might be playing OT one time and OG the next. Makes no fucking sense. ID your best 5-6 and stick with it. If they fail miserably over the course of a game them mix it up but make a decision and let it ride for longer than a series or two.

Pure indecision. Does not align with the decision making at other positions on offense, obviously.

It's interesting how willing they are to mix up the OL throughout a game but won't even touch QB after about 20 games.

I would propose a drinking game - for any remaining game this season - that everyone has to drink every time Petras misses an open receiver or throws an incomplete pass (or INT) to a double/triple covered receiver ... but everyone's liver would suffer irrevocable alcohol poisoning before the middle of the 2nd quarter.

And yes, that sadly includes this week vs Nevada.

Probably Already Posted, but;

Kakert saying that Ragaini and Johnson are supposedly going to see limited action this week.

Me: Yay. More receiver targets that Petras can miss by a country mile because he sucks.

That violates the Geneva convention multiple times

Because again they’re trying to prove a point. Here, it’s that when you execute well it doesn’t matter if people know what’s coming. Except Iowa doesn’t. So.

Vince Lombardi said it didn't matter if the defense knew what plays you were going to run because if you executed properly they couldn't stop you. Well, that philosophy caught up to him eventually.

KF was in high school the last time OG and OT were swappable positions at major college level.

The first part is the biggest problem. Iowa is incredibly predictable based on formation, and given that their pass game is also largely horizontal, the run game is just no threat.

That clip shared yesterday of the ISU cornerback sprinting towards the RB with no hesitation on the snap was incredibly telling.
It can still work the way we've been running it with moderate success the last 20 years, but for that moderate success you need a very very good OL, and a halfway decent QB.

The OL is going to be ok, but pretty average (certainly below average for the Ferentz era). And our QB is so bad we'd prefer to see the punter
