From that Slate piece … cheap shot to bring the race angle into this.
On Saturday, the Ferentzes’ offense was outclassed against an Illinois defense led by Ryan Walters, a rising-star coordinator who is not the offspring of head coach Bret Bielema. It’s worth noting that Walters is Black, the Ferentzes are not, and one effect of coaching nepotism is to keep coaching circles white.
An aggravating factor here is that both Ferentzes are subjects of a lawsuit brought by former Iowa players who say they faced systemic racism and discrimination during their years in the program. (The Ferentzes and Iowa are aggressively defending that suit, while Barta is no longer a defendant.) One player has alleged that Brian told him in front of the coaching staff that “only a dumb ass Black player would do it like that.” Decorated Iowa tailback Akrum Wadley said that Brian asked him whether he was going to rob a liquor store, and another time asked if he was going to rob a gas station. Kirk Ferentz was responsible for the entire program in these years, though I suppose not for Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz’s behavior, given that the coordinator reported to the athletic director.

I can’t really fault him for not calling out his assistants or players for being shitty. That would be pretty poor leadership to do it in that setting.

That said, when throwing out logic, reason, and/or my confirmation bias, I think he’s a coward.
He didn’t need to. But it was a shitty shitty response, especially in light of his other pressers in recent weeks.

tOSU is a KF Special. CCMF!
Well, I'll be That Guy wearing all the Iowa shit I can find while checking Touchdown Jesus off my bucket list that day; maybe a miracle will happen!

...who am I kidding. The defense might hold them to within 40 in the first half, and OSU won't even have the common decency to put Petras out of his misery by, like, shattering his hip or something.

Two weeks from now will actually be what we all thought the 2017 game was going to be.

I believe we were told going into this off-season that they were going to change many, many things. Maybe I'm wrong and they didn't say that, but I think they did.

Now, since they seemingly changed nothing during the offseason, they have 2 weeks to change everything.

Fortunate timing for them to have 2 full weeks to implement a new offense.

They should feel very fortunate that all the pitchforks came out during a bye week. Now, Brian has a fair chance to show us what he's made of.

Spencer Petras
Iowa Hawkeyes
One Liner:

Petras is a tough pocket passer, but he lacks the accuracy, ball placement, physical tools, and production to attract teams in the pre-draft process.
Evaluation:
Petras displays his toughness by connecting on throws as rushers crash down on him. He’s always willing to stand in the pocket and take hits if it means completing passes downfield. Mechanically, the California native displays a quick release and clean throwing motion and keeps his feet from stagnating in the pocket. Petras puts touch on deep shots and throws with good velocity on deep throws over the middle of the field. He’s shown flashes of throwing with anticipation and working through all of his progressions. However, Petras has a long list of negative traits and tendencies that will likely keep him from being drafted. He displays limited arm talent to unlock the deep third of the field and lacks the agility and speed to threaten defenses with his legs. The pocket passer doesn’t sense pressure well and holds the ball for too long instead of accepting defeat and living to play another down. Petras’ touch is inconsistent on short passes, and he sometimes throws fastballs at pass catchers only a few yards away. While he’s comfortable throwing on the run, Petras’ accuracy on the move wavers. His base, footwork, and lower body mechanics are inconsistent snap to snap. Petras doesn’t fit throws into tight windows, struggles with ball placement, and has a large number of wildly inaccurate passes that miss their marks completely. The third-year starter misses open pass catcher with high throws and doesn’t consistently give his targets chances to make plays. He’s sometimes too slow working through his reads and arrives late to the open receiver. Petras is guilty of making poor decisions, like throwing into double coverage or forcing passes when the right call is to throw the ball away and reset the offense.
