i would like to bring in a different OC but I would find it hard to make a change coming off back to back division titles.
Really?

You would have a hard time making a change when every shred of data as well as your eyes are telling you that the guy is under performing?

Would you have the same problem making a change at QB because Iowa is managing to overcome Petras' ineptitude?

We do not have access to all the inputs that go into such a decision. We have access to game stats and our own eyes, that’s it.

there’s so much MORE to this complex job performance equation

but there is. Our program has unparalleled staff continuity. Whether you like it or not, we have a foundational framework in place that’s become the iowa brand. Brian is a key part of that, including recruiting guys to it. We have no idea about the dynamics within the coaching staff, but it’s far to assume that the group is as dedicated to each other as much as the players are.

I suspect Brian still tries to move on, but worst case is we actually get to see a new qb. I am curious what our offense would look like if our defense was average. The two shouldn’t be mutually exclusive but we are clearly running an offense designed to keep the defense fresh, although we struggle to make it look that way.
Consistently going 3 and out doesn’t help keep the defense fresh.

I mean, lol at this.

There isn’t a team in the country whose offense puts more pressure on it’s defense, but that’s probably because of some super sophisticated plot to keep the defense fresh.

“Brian, we want to keep the defense fresh for the second half”.

“Okay Dad, I’ll put Gavin in”’.

Calm down on this. Minnesota isn't great, but the game is in the cold at Minnesota and Iowa is still led by Kirk’s son, Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz and Spencer Petras who managed 146 yards of total offense at home.

Iowa could still lose out if the ball bounces the wrong way.
This is true, and we should probably keep in mind that last year Minnesota killed Wisconsin's hopes of winning the West with that big upset in the last game. Although it wouldn't be a big upset, they are no doubt salivating at the prospect of doing the same to Iowa this year.

you are missing my point. The point is that the staff THINKS they are taking an approach that will protect the defense, which very well may be true with better/different personnel. And even though the offense is historically awful, we are still protecting the defense more than we would be by playing faster and throwing 50 times per game.

lol at the notion that out program is so special that it should just go on tolerating bottom quintile offensive production out of the head coach’s son in perpetuity. and because he’s such a great recruiter, apparently

doesnt that depend on what the tradeoff is?

what trade off? on this hand, we have a perennial bottom 10 offense in the country . on the other hand, we don’t recruit good QBs or WR (or even OL anymore apparently), but some of the other coaches, especially his father, really like him.

As Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz would say, what's the upside?

I think Lwade means the trade off is wins. Because iowa being this bad on offense somehow equates to more Iowa wins, because of culture...or something.

Good god, the argument for tolerating horrific offense is all the offensive talent stockpiled by Brian because of his recruiting?

Its possible that Jack Campbell is so loyal to Spencer because he's so inept and just thinks he's such a great person. But I'm guessing if there was a better QB playing and Spencer was wearing a red hat or not here anymore- he would feel the same way about them.

I don’t claim to have the answer. But I do know that building a successful team involves a lot more than firing people who are struggling, and I am guessing that Gary agrees based on his history.

Yes, there's a run way- but this is 5-6 years of substandard offense

Iowa total offense:

KEN O'KEEFE YEARS
2002: 424.5 YPG, #13 of 117 total schools (11 wins, Banks QB)
2003: 334.1 YPG, 92 of 117 (10 wins, Tate QB)
2004: 312.7 YPG, 104 of 120 (10 wins, Tate QB)
2005: 432.4 YPG, 22 of 119 (7 wins, Tate QB)
2006: 383.3 YPG, 27 of 119 (6 wins, Tate QB)
2007: 316.3 YPG, 109 of 119 (6 wins, Christensen QB)
2008: 370.4 YPG, 53 of 119 (9 wins, Christensen/Stanzi QB)
2009: 336.3 YPG, 89 of 120 (11 wins, Stanzi QB)
2010: 382.9 YPG, 57 of 120 (8 wins, Stanzi QB)
2011: 372,5 YPG, 76 of 120 (7 wins, Vandenberg QB)

GREG DAVIS YEARS
2012: 310.4 YPG, 117 of 124 (4 wins, Vandenberg QB)
2013: 377.0 YPG, 84 of 125 (8 wins, Rudock QB)
2014: 400.1 YPG, 66 of 128 (7 wins, Rudock QB)
2015: 386.1 YPG, 72 of 128 (12 wins, Beathard QB)
2016: 325.0 YPG, 121 of 128 (8 wins, Beathard QB)

Kirk’s son, Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz YEARS
2017: 329.1 YPG, 117 of 130 (8 wins, Stanley QB)
2018: 375.0 YPG, 92 of 130 (9 wins, Stanley QB)
2019: 366.5 YPG, 99 of 130 (10 wins, Stanley QB)
2020: 368.6 YPG, 88 of 128 (6 wins - COVID, Petras QB)
2021: 303.9 YPG, 121 of 130 (10 wins, Petras QB)
2022: 242.2 YPG, 130 of 131 (incomplete, Petras QB)

Conclusions:

- KOK >>> GDGD >>> BF
- While we fondly remember the offense under Stanley, it was mediocre even then.
- Phil Parker is a genius. Iowa has won a lot of football games with crappy offense and his defense.
- The two worst offensive seasons of the past 20 years will both be Brian/Spencer specials.

Just can’t see firing Brian, despite the horrific data.

Just imagine how good Iowa would be if the defensive players were inspired to performance through their loyalty to competent offensive performance instead of shitty.

The best thing about this argument is that it presumes there is no room between some sort of ruthless cutthroat environment and 5 years of loyalty to absolute bottom tier performance.
if only there was historical data that showed how Kirk has gone through this with every OC he’s had

No, the point is that you are desperate to make a contrarian point and are bending yourself into a retard pretzel to do so.

I know we're the worst offense in the country, but what is more important - being good or continuity??

We'll really have a hard time recruiting good offensive players if we don't have continuity!

Sometimes it's like you're trying so hard to say words that you forget the thing you're trying to argue about.
lol. You don’t think Kirk has a number of reasons for thinking that OC continuity would outweigh the upside of making a change?

you seem to think I am the one making the decision here.

You said this.

i would like to bring in a different OC but I would find it hard to make a change coming off back to back division titles.
That sure sounds like you saying that you would have a hard time justifying a change in OC.
