I’m on record as having said I’m more concerned about fixing the line than I am the QB spot.

but there’s something I’ve never quite understood….if Brian is so good at coaching the OLine…and it was the OLine preventing his offense from “working”….why the fuck didn’t he fix it? The idea that he was capable, but simply chose not to because that was someone else’s job makes no sense to me
Because of a lack of talent on the line similar to the lack of talent in every single other offensive group? There’s no magic fix at any offensive position. Unless you count getting new players as magic.

The line is the one spot though where it doesn’t really make a ton of sense though. There have been a decent number of highly recruited guys at that position. And the attrition rate seems awfully high. Watching that starts to make you question if he’s as good at coaching the position as some here would have you think. The idea that nearly every single one of these recruits have turned out to be mental midgets or terrible football players just doesn’t make a ton of sense to me

I'm not saying this as a defense of Kirk's boy, but there's been a number of medical retirements on the OL.

Does the team have a sports psychologist/therapist? It seems recently there have been many players, especially on the OL, that have depression or other mental health issues.

I think they have one as I remember something about Petras going to her.

I wish they could somehow convince Joe Philbin to come back and coach OL. I wouldn’t mind him at OC if Gattis or Chryst aren’t the guy.
He’s fully retired, right?

Retirements, leaving early, and recruiting misses I think accounts for most of it. I can certainly imagine his particular brand of red ass being viewed as played out by guys on the team though. Who do we give credit to for recognizing Linderbaum and moving him over?

I actually think we tend to have not a great idea of a team is well coached or not when it comes to position groups. But the thing that’s frustrating to me about the line is they can’t fire off together, and no one seems mean in the games.I don’t recall either of those things being issues whencoaching them was Brian’s job.

I'm just going to put my opinions on the record regarding Brian and the OL coaching position.
  • Brian is a terrible OC who should at minimum should have been removed before this year.
  • Barnett is fucking dogshit at coaching the mental side of being an offensive lineman. Watching the Iowa OL consistently confused about who they are supposed to block is an abomination. Fire him yesterday.
  • Getting the next OL coach hire right is of utmost importance because there is a lot of developmental damage that needs to be reversed.
  • Brian was a well above average OL coach whose players appeared to know what they were doing.
  • I could see a world where Brian as the OL coach under a future OC would work, but only if he eats a clear title and pay demotion and the atmosphere in the building isn't completely toxic surrounding him remaining.
  • Brian will never again advance higher than position coach/run game coordinator. NFL, college or otherwise.
  • I would prefer that they hire a good OL coach to replace Barnett and Brian moves on.
See Pierce’s post above.

Yes.

He was a grad transfer, so no portal timing issues. Any other random transfers can’t really do it until the portal “officially” opens on Monday.
Yeah you don’t want the NCAA to lay down the hammer on you

I will say it’s pretty fucking enjoyable knowing Kirk isn’t afraid to tamper/contact/whatever these studs before it is technically allowed. Was more expecting the portal to open on Monday and Iowa being dumbfounded by all these guys already having selected their next destination.
