I tend to agree. If Indiana out of the blue found $4 million per year to pay a football coach, they'd find a damn good one, and it would have nothing to do with the "attractiveness" of Indiana football.
Well, I never....

And did you have to add the scare quotes, MJ?

I'm starting to feel more and more confident that Barta will screw this up.
I'm by no means a Barta apologist, but let's be real here. Iowa is not a top tier BB coaching job. Barta can offer money, but not much more. Iowa is a damned hard place at which to win consistently. The in state talent pool certainly isn't Big 10 worthy.

Within the Big 10 I'd put it behind Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Ohio State in terms of attractiveness of the job.
I tend to agree with this. It's really a bitch of a situation for Barta. Fans want a big name with a strong track record who's not scummy. I don't see those guys coming to Iowa. Pearl's supposed love of Iowa was the only shot we had, and it doesn't look like he's going to take it.

Maybe I'm alone, but I don't mind 'scummy' if it means we're successful. I would hope they operate within the rules, but I wouldn't be too upset if they pushed the boundaries now and again.

I'm not going to get worked up about any of the lower level candidates (if hired) until I see a couple of his recruiting classes signed.

Barta called, said he didn't like my game management approach, but thought I could recruit. Disappointing, I thought I could turn things around.

Now that RMK's retired, I suspect virtually all coaches "push the boundaries" now and again.

And there's not a thing wrong with that. Most of the NCAA's rules are anything but ambiguous.

BTW, I don't think anyone should read this as Mr. Hawk reporting that Marshall is the guy.
True. He's just reporting what he heard. Let's assume it is not true, is MH's post any worse than simply naming every coach alive as a possibility so you have cover when the actual hire is made.

Bumping myself because I didn't make that up.
I honestly don't care. Those guys have some sort of weird insecurity over there. I'm just passing along info from credible sources. It might be completely wrong information. If it's wrong, we'll still have been right (and first) about a bunch of stuff over the last few years.

What I can say is that as everyone knows, in coaching, "offers" aren't made like when you people go to work in a cubicle at Wells Fargo. In the coaching ranks, it's often done through third parties, feeling each other out, and many times "offers" can be construed as one party knowing what the deal is, and deciding whether or not to send the message back and "formally" interview. Everyone knows that. It gives them all plausible deniability. So, for all we know, the message went out to Marhsall that he would be "offered" if interested, and he decided he wasn't interested, so no "offer" was made.

That information will be $10 or $99 for the year, and if you try to cancel, please know that you'll spend 4 hours on the phone with someone and they still probably won't cancel you.

Like I said the other day - it's funny how these coaching search rumors work. Regardless of which version is right, it sounds like Marshall's name legitimately came up, but we'll never know how far any talks went.

If I may, it kind of reminds me of the way a few posters on this site jump all over Jon Miller when he says something.

If Jon Miller (or anyone else, for that matter) is "hearing" something, I want to know it. I would think everyone is capable of making the distinction between "Someone told me they're talking to these guys" and "This is the guy!!!!!"

The only thing I don't want to read is someone who makes shit up.

I just hope he isn't the next coach for two reasons:

(1) I don't want him as the next Iowa coach; and

(2) No one here can imagine Mr. Hawk with a bigger ego, which would most certainly be the result of another successful breaking of major news. :)

The problem with Jon Miller (as Mr. Hawk implied) is that he throws out about 100 names. If you toss out that many names, odds are that one of them becomes the coach. FWIW, The Criminal wasn't one of the 100 that Miller (or Kakert) mentioned last go around.

Kakert = Here's a list of 4,375 coaches that have been linked to the job; none of which he believes will be coming to Iowa. In other words, he doesn't know shit. But, Gregg Marshall has not been offered.

Here's the thing: if a coach is in place by the 29th, I think it would be tough to say MH's information was "wrong," even if that coach isn't Marshall or, God forbid, the Utah guy.

One of the Gazette guys in the chat I linked earlier (Morehouse?) said that he had heard the 29th plan too earlier this week, but wasn't sure if that was still in place.

Something I saw posted elsewhere, for whatever it's worth:

Iowa AD Gary Barta and assistant AD Fred Mims (a worthless waste of my tax dollars is this guy's salary) are in Atlanta after flying down yesterday for interviews with at least 4 current coaching candidates. The names are flying around, but the 4 who many seem to think were there for meetings with the seach firm Iowa is using and with the Barta are (in no particular order) Paul Hewitt from Georgia Tech, Jim Boylan from Utah (also a former Michigan State assistant), Fran McCaffrey from Sienna (reported to be heading to DePaul, who reportedly offered something like $2.5 million), and Lon Kruger from UNLV. The story on Hawkeyereport indicated one of the first four head coaches who Iowa met with already withdrew from consideration after the meeting, and that might be either of the last two, but nothing confirmed as yet.

One other name that seems to keep coming back up is Billy Donovan. Yesterday, I was on the phone with a lawyer from a Milwaukee firm, and that lawyer swears that one of his buddies does legal work for Donovan, and he claims his buddy and Donovan are in Atlanta right now. No one confirmed this on any of the Hawkeye websites, but this lawyer is a guy that really has no reason to make that up (he's a huge Marquette booster and was afraid Iowa would go after their coach, but their coach reportedly makes almost $3 million per annum.)

As far as Iowa fans wanting Ben Jacobsen from Northern Iowa, there maybe some who want him to be talked to, but there is almost no interest from either Jacobsen in the Iowa job or from Iowa in him.

Other names that may get interviews: Paul Lusk, a Purdue assistant who played part of 1 year at Iowa before breaking his leg and transferring to Southern Illinois. Duke assistant Chris Collins may get an interview. Mark Turgeon at Texas A & M is reportedly interested, but that is just rumored for now. One more guy lobbying for an interview is former Alabama coach Mark Gottfried, who recruited Cully Payne out of HS to Alabama before he resigned mid season in 2008-09. He may get an interview this week as well
from what I understand.

+1. The dogging on Miller at times reminds me of the obsession with Alford. If people "hear something" about Iowa athletics from an even remotely credible source, I want to hear it too.

Who is the most obvious, up and coming coach in the US? That is who Barta will pursue. Catch a rising star, not a falling knife.

Kruger would be a good choice IMO. I imagine he wants back into the Big Ten.

And LMAO at Donovan ever coming to Iowa. That's more pie-in-the-sky than Pearl.

That's some interesting speculation, Lime. Donovan, Turgeon and Hewitt would be my preferences from that list, in that order. Duke assistants don't have great track record.

That's some really shoddy logic there. As if any coach at a mid-major is no different than any other coach at a mid-major.

IMO, most of the coaches that are typically available for hire from the major schools are ones you probably don't want.

Every once in a while, a school like Minnesota can luck out when a school like Kentucky decides that somebody with Tubby Smith's track record there isn't good enough. But those situations are rare.

Most schools have little choice but to hire from the mid-major ranks.
