Also, from their breakdown and watching the 2 games so far, it seems that Phil Parker went into the offseason pissed off with how the defense performed and made an effort go change things and develop players. The result is Iowa's defense is really fucking good again.

Of course, the offense just fucking blows and is going to waste another great Phil Parker defense.

As much as Lester is better than fat fuck Brian, the warning sign on him is how much he has been in love with TJ Washington for over a year despite all the evidence that he sucks.
I think there are all the makings of Kirk's tenure ending very very badly, which given the early parts of his career, are just sad.

I wasn't going to share, but a convo with a high profile, well respected former player recently was incredibly depressing. Kirk is mandating more things than we think. And unfortunately, recent history would suggest that he's going to resist change, no matter how bad the results are.

That's a stretch. They have a better QB and pass catchers. Backs are a wash, and I thought Iowa's line was mostly fine. Iowa State's quarterback made competitive contested throws, while Iowa's cannot.
Their TEs were clearly better. I’m not sure their receivers were any better.

I think Washington can be a productive 3rd down back, but he's not an every down guy and it's stupid to try to make him one. He looked decent in that role vs Mizzou in the bowl.

Yet another, totally inexplicable personnel decision….

he wants to run it like a high school program.
I'm not even going to pretend I understand the motivations behind it. But the consistency of Iowa repeatedly doing things that don't work, a refusal to deviate from them, is at this point likely to end up being Kirk's "legacy."

He said that in the ISU pregame presser. And I have no doubt that the first half game plan was dictated by him.

What are the odds that Hank doesn’t suck at QB?

I think Hank kinda sucked at Auburn but he was very inexperienced.

I listened to a little bit of the call in show with Ferentz last night. Someone called in and gently asked why we don’t throw down field more often.
Ferentz said throwing downfield is a very low percentage play. And when they do that, it puts them behind the sticks from a play calling progression.

So, that is where he’s coming from. I’d love to know how much autonomy Lester really has.

It is broken and Kirk is the reason. Being this bad on offense is obviously a choice at this point. Not surprising from an old head coach

Kirk’s actually still correct that when you throw down field, two out of three things that can happen are bad:

- Incomplete pass
- Interception
- Pass interference

I don’t think the possibility of a completion even enters his mind. Plus pass interference can go both ways, so basically scariest environment imaginable.

We throw it 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage to MAYBE 10 yards downfield. I don’t think anyone disagrees that a long downfield shot is a low percentage play. What we’d like to see is the middle of the field being used and some 15-25 yard throws. That is absent in our offense.

We also throw it to receivers that have stopped with their backs facing the end zone.

Completely disagree. It's a high percentage throw in the year 2025, and it certainly isn't risky. You either get a completion, an PI, a long incompletion or a turnover that is essentially a long punt.

The benefits of opening up the field for the run on top of those reasons makes anyone who isn't throwing down field an idiot.

Instead of high risk plays, Kirk prefers to use no reward plays.

He thinks about it from an offensive yardage standpoint. Not from a keeping the defense off balance standpoint.

I don’t think it’s a risky throw bc you’re right it’s usually a completion, incomplete, or PI. Rarely is it a pick. However I do think it’s a low percentage play. I agree with you, we should take 3-4 shots downfield every game.

I guess what I’m saying is we need more intermediate passing as well.

Actually we just need a better passing game. There…I said it.
