Fran’s response to Bobby asking how teams are shutting down sand fart and Dix:

“They are fouling the crap outta them.”

Bobby quickly turned to asking about Freeman and that response was something to the effect of they are “mugging” him

I liked him. Freshman bigs get a long leash when it comes to “flaws” because you think he’ll work through it as he gains experience.

But he’s got a lot of “fake tough” to him which is frustrating because I do think he’s a decently skilled big. He’s just so fucking soft.
Baby soft with the ball and on the boards. And then flat out lethargic defensively.

Where are all the Fran defenders now?
I'm ready to move on from Fran but fuck off good and hard with this. He dragged Iowa basketball out of its grave and he's responsible for some great players and moments for the program. Wanting to shame or spike the ball in the face of the people who wanted him to succeed is tip-to-tail loser shit

I think we all wanted him to succeed. I want him gone because he isn’t.

He succeeded. But also reached his peak. There’s nothing else he can accomplish because his coaching can only go so far. I love Fran, but when you get as far as you can go, it’s time to turn it over to someone else.

So much apathy. From inside and outside, it seems. That's when it's time.

program in serious need of a reboot
The whole operation.

New coach will help but for the love of God they need to blow up everything involving the presentation. Halftime entertainment was some girls playing musical chairs again and having to make layups. Two other timeouts of course have the layup, free throw challenge. Then really spice it up with layup, 3, half courter. It really gets crazy when they have the crowd play imaginary bongos then do the dance cam later. And the smile cam!

The arena sucks and they can’t even slap some paint where needed or add another fucking ice cream stand or two if that’s what people want. At least do shit football does and show a classic highlight, update on guys in the pros. Anything but the shit they’re doing.

Obviously all of that is secondary to the product on the floor but try anything to make the experience better.

Didn't watch. LOL'd at the box score.

Not even sure what Beth can do at this point. If this were the NBA, you would have fired Fran after the Wisconsin loss or the UCLA loss and tried to rally the team and fans around a new voice and at least try to salvage the season and keep the players engaged for next season.

This is the NCAA though and losing to a team like Minnesota at home just ended your chances at the NCAA tournament and firing Fran now ensures that you likely lose multiple players you might want to try and salvage for the next coach. Of course, because you have no shot at the tourney even when you do fire Fran at the end of the season you are in a dead period where you can't hire your next coach because they are busy making a tourney run.

Anyways, firing him now is a bad look and hard logistically in college. I guess just let him coach out the rest of the season and hope you can come to some agreement for him to retire or move on. If not, you have to fire him. He's too old and this has gone too far down the rabbit hole for fans to just let Fran fire a couple of assistants and a strength coach and have him salvage it. He's not coaching with any real passion or fire, he looks defeated and uninterested.

Fran and his family have been through a lot the last decade, hope he just decides to retire and enjoy the rest of his life watching Jack play and enjoying the money he earned. Hand over the program with grace to the next coach and don't end this era with an ugly separation.

let fran fail this year, can him in april, let the new guy re-recruit/retain the '25 class and those on the roster who are not soft and slow.

On Sunday my wife dragged me to a birthday party for an 80 year old lady from church.

Fran’s look this season is how I imagine that I looked at that birthday party … just standing around, disinterested, and wanting it to end.

Minnesota purposely wasted 25 seconds of shot clock and ended up with wide open layups over and over. They knew exactly where to throw the ball to get a Freeman double team to come with 8ish seconds left on the shot clock then a simple post entry to a big guy with Dix or Sandfort or Pryce (he was horrible again) trying to guard someone a foot taller than them.

Minnesota is a truly horrible team. This is a new low for the Fran era. The Gophers had a guard who shot 37% from the line that was out there until the bitter end and they didn’t realize fouling him on every possession was the way until too late.

give johnson-arigu a car

give the '25 recruits, dembele* and tadjo* something to keep them content

wheel, deal, and steal to give the new coach something to work with

* yes, they suck, but their kind of suck is arguably preferable to Waukee suck, especially with a different coach

As someone who thought Fran should have “retired” last March, Iowa shouldn’t fire him during the year. Have class and let Fran decide how he wants to go out at the end of season.

Oh for fuck's sake there is a zero percent chance he will ever get fired during the season. Probably a 5% chance he'll ever get "fired" at all. He'll go out on his own terms as he has earned. I'll miss the fun offense. I'll miss the great out of bounds sets and the sets out of timeouts. If he just could've won a couple tourney games. And emphasized a little bit of defense. I'm confused by how terrible we rebound. I feel like Fran teams have always rebounded well but maybe I'm wrong on that.

As lethargic as the team was playing I kept thinking that Fran needed to get in the ref's ass and maybe even get a T. No chair slamming or anything, but just a garden variety tech where the veins in his neck are visible and his pointer fingers are angled toward the floor with his arms trembling at his side. Standard Fran fit. But he seems as checked out some of the players.

His teams have always relied on bigs who can rebound. The guards have never been told to do it.

There is not a single player on the roster that I care about. This roster should’ve been a tournament team, but the leadership from the top down sucks. I have no idea how there is no one in the entire organization that can get through to Fran that we need to coach defense and rebounding much differently.

Fran’s change of behavior is so bizarre that I suspect Beth laid down the law last year and now he is pouting and quietly quitting.

I don’t see how this doesn’t get ugly unless Fran has already determined this is his last year. No way does he step away with dignity, because I don’t see him taking accountability. Most likely, Fran doesn’t want to be here next year but isn’t going to quit, so Iowa will fire him, pay him, and he won’t be seen in Iowa city again. Sad, but that’s the way it is going to have to be

Dix is a nice player, but he only has one year left and he needs to go get paid somewhere. Freeman is fine, but doesn’t seem to be much of a worker or leader.

Brock is just far too physically limited and it’s not being offset by any sort of game intelligence.

I suspect that is correct. Fran wants to leave but he wants his buyout.

I’m not sure I buy that he necessarily wants to leave. Why bring in Johnson-Arigu then? Why would he leave after a game a couple weeks ago to go recruit?

He has a poorly constructed roster that hasn’t been coached how to play defense. There’s no reason Traore should give up a simple straight line drive to the basket in zone defense. Everything about the way he closed out, positioned himself and tried to defend Femi on that play was terrible. I don’t think that’s a lack of talent. That’s someone that hasn’t been coached on it at all.

My fear is if he makes any changes it will be to hire Conner. Patrick is going to be looking for work too.

The team is worse than it's individual pieces, which is most damning to the coaches.

If I was Fran, I would take a somewhat graceful exit this year, call it a retirement and go sit in the bleachers for a few years in Indiana and just enjoy the family you have made.

Get back into coaching at 68, 69 or whatever and you have a solid 5-10 year run with a mid major.

Between the men's and women's teams, Iowa Basketball is on an 8 game losing streak.
