I mentioned it elsewhere, but while I’m up letting my old diabetic dogs out to piss, my nephew is the kids captain Saturday. He’s an incredible story, and I hope you enjoy whatever country song his dad picked out for the wave. I’m sure it’ll be a song. Maybe.

He’s a legitimate medical marvel. A hemispherectomy is really hard to pull off, but the miracle workers at UIHC did it for him when he was a baby and really did save his life. He’s living a pretty normal life, and it’s all because of the UIHC.

I know sometimes we may jest about the wave jumping the shark but this kind of story brings it all home and grounds us back to the reality of what a treasure we have right here in Stead Family Children's hospital.

I recently had a chance to tour the Stead Family Children’s Hospital, and I’ve never been more proud to have an organization like of the University of Iowa and that hospital in our community. They have some of the best programs in the world, and I believe their prenatal department just set some record for saving the youngest premature child. Weighed something like 9 ounces. They see around 109,000 kids through the hospital every year.

The design is filled with evidence based architecture and colors that promote positivity and healing. They take families privacy and security seriously. They have amazing programs where they bring in dogs, check out gaming systems, offer families free books, have local celebrities (Kittle, Clark, and more) read books to the kids, and much more.

The Wave is a great tradition, and brings a lot of positive press to our University, but that Children’s Hospital is the heart of it. We’re lucky to have it in Iowa City, representing the University of Iowa and changing the lives of hundreds of thousands of kids and families.
