Heck, knowing the forecast, changing game time to an evening game may have been prudent. I know players have better protections, and the TV schedule is important for millions of dollars. But it just makes you wonder if we do extend the season into August if the Big Ten needs to have more night games like the SEC.

True. But it would have been the source of public scrutiny and mockery, which we saw above. Which obviously also isn't the end of the world either, but public universities have optics in mind at all times.

But I'd also add that something like this had never happened prior to this, so it's armchair quarterbacking to say what they should have done to prevent it from happening. Bands have performed in heat similar to that numerous times in the past without incident. I'm sure they took what they felt were enough precautions to keep everyone safe. It's a tragedy, but let's not overreact and completely change everything.

Agreed, sometimes a sad situation is simply that. These are adults that should be aware of the risks involved and have the capacity to make an alternative decision as they see fit. Not necessary to make overarching changes in this case, imo. They made several announcements to seek shelter, hydration especially if feeling ill and have water bottle filling stations, etc.

Oh I agree to some extent. But you can bet the University will indeed change everything in that they will scrap marching band stuff for heat more easily in the future.

If he’s a Drum and Bugle Corp kid, he’s probably practiced in heat as bad or worse. Those kids work their asses off, all summer long. Sometimes a bad thing just happens, due to the wrong person in the wrong particular conditions.

I thought they did cancel the halftime show. The band performed pre game with light gear (ie t shirts) and then this happened prompting a cancellation of the half time.

Yeah. My best friend was just a few seats away. His account...

The cops were there right away. It took over 10 minutes for the medical team to respond. He was seizing the whole time. When they did show up, they didn't come up the 12 rows. The cops brought him down to the EMTs and they took him out through the visitor tunnel. The only thing I could do was throw them a bottle of frozen water I had to help cool him down. I wish my daughter was with us as she is a certified EMT. Just tragic.

Medical was severely overwhelmed. An older gentleman collapsed in the tunnel above us in section 115. I ran to first aid and it was standing room only.

I feel terrible for the band kid who saw it happen. The kid next to him was inconsolable. Just horrible, tragic and preventable.

This is especially tough to read, given how they announced additional physicians, nurses, and even medical students would be on hand to assist. But it was legit nonstop as far as people being overwhelmed. Just had to look toward the concourses to see the constant responses via gators, law enforcement showed up multiple times in our section to assist. Just feel so awful for that poor kid and everyone who saw what happened, it's simply unimaginable.

Yeah I mean people are being critical of the response time, but there was no way to immediately triage something like this…sounds like an EMT would have had to ditch someone that already needed their help.

Fortunately the University will be funding an entire department who will teach the undergraduates that the kid probably died from a COVID vaccine because nobody dies just because it’s hot outside.

He doesn't post here but an old regular on halo softball is a family member, per a FB message. Saturday was the first time he found him on the field pregame and got a picture of him in a couple years or so.
