Is that not true?
When KOK was a head coach he ran a wide-open spread offense. Norm Parker was a blitz-aholic at MSU and Vandy. KF tells them exactly what they have to run.
There's a difference between telling them what they have to run and playcalling.
No shit. Do you call it "freedom if you are given ten plays to run and then you have every right to run those ten plays whenever you want.

KF is going to hire a coach that runs the "scheme" he wants, true.

he does not heavily influence specific "play calling" nor does he limit the inventory (for lack of a better term) of plays. as with every single staff in america, they have a set of plays that they feel are appropriate for each general situation. this isnt playstation where you can quickly scroll from screen to screen and then hit RB to flip the play around and hit X to select whatever you want.

Ahh, we haven't seen the "Play Station Card" played here in awhile. It's good to see it again.

fuck yes i am right. its not like i am bragging about how brad banks and I tag teamed a stripper the night before the orange bowl. ive just had conversations with ex-QBs before on this topic and I feel like that falls under "horse's mouth" rather than "name dropper"

I've always assumed that KF's influence on the play calling is exerted in generalities. For example, inside the 30 yard line with under four minutes in a half, he's not going to want the OC to open it up. So the offense will play conservatively, be it runs or "safe passes". He also probably has an influence on the proportion of run vs. pass plays are called in a game. That sort of thing. And that sort of influence also comes from being above the coordinators for so long - it's almost "automatic" after 10+ years of working together.

I think when people say he is micromanaging, it means that he doesn't let the OC game plan on his own, but gives explicit or not so explicit parameters. This is probably similar to most head coaches I'm guessing.

On the other hand, it is baffling to me how long it traditionally takes the plays to come in from the sideline. Which does raise the question of how often KOK checks in with KF in situations. And I'm not talking punt versus go for it on fourth down. I'm talking usual game situations. For example - on second and 8 the RB gets stuffed and we end up with 3rd and long. The play doesn't come in until 20 seconds left on the play clock. The players get lined up with less than 10 seconds on the play clock, leaving the QB very little time to read the defense and make adjustments if he wanted to. Is that on KOK? Or was he checking in with KF? We'll never know.

But one of the goals for the new OC (in my mind) would be to get the plays in sooner to allow players to be in the best position possible for each play.

i used to think that we couldnt be any worse at getting the play in on time...but now we are replacing a mega-experienced coordinator with a possible n00b. it may get worse.

ive often wondered if the delay is sometimes because KF doesnt chime in much and suddenly hes got some input that contradicts what KOK had in mind.

Parker is a good candidate. Why pass that up and lose him for your 4th or 5th choice from the outside?

People are seriously underestimating how big of a this change is. This is a total revamp.
Why pass up Parker? Uh, because he was acting DC last year when Norm was out and I didn't see any defensive improvment. If you're going to change coordinators, doesn't it make sense to expect improvement?

And it's more of a shuffle, than a revamp.

Now, bring on the, "fuck you noob".
JFC.

1). The defense ranked 7th in the nation in that year. 7th in the fucking nation.

2). "If you're going to change coordinators, doesn't it make sense to expect improvement"? We didn't fire Norm, dumbass. We don't need improvement from what we've had. Our defenses have been awesome.

3). He wasn't even the only guy in charge. It was a "collaboration" between he, Wilson and Kaczenski you buffoon. It's not like he got to run his defense or install new shit.

So to sum it up, you're pissed about the choice because the defense didn't improve from their elite status, while they were coaching shorthanded and had a bunch of guys trying to come together with the plan on short notice in the middle of the year.

Now you can GFY
1) You are a fucking retard if you think the defense was ranked 7th in 2010. I challenge you to find a link saying that Iowa's defense was anywhere near that. Unless, of course, you're talking about one catagory and not total defense. I don't know what games you've been watching, or maybe your definition of "awesome" is different than the rest of the world but, Iowa's defense has only been "awesome" for opposing offenses to shred for awhile now. Just ask Steele "Iowa made me a Heisman candidate in one game, and then I turned out to be total shit" Jantz.

2) I never stated that we fired Norm. Again, show me where that is the case and I'll admit I'm wrong. I pointed out that Phil didn't do anything with the defense when he had the chance. I would expect that when a change is made, improvment should be expected, hence, my comment regarding change and improvement, you dumbass.

3) His name was the one I heard when questions were asked who was running the defense in Norm's absence. If it was a "collaboration", so be it. Regardless, he didn't do anything special. And if you think "his" defense is going to be any different than the one we've seen for the last 13 years, I'd love to place a bet with you. Phil learned how to be a DC from Norm and it'll be more of the same. The only difference will be that when Norm brought "his" defense to Iowa, it was a new look and it took awhile for opposing coaches to figure out, and now it's 13 year old news.

So to sum it up, you clearly don't know as much as you think you do, and you attempt to mask that fact by shitting on other points of view. I'll be waiting for those bits of proof I asked for and until then, GFY. :)

I think Hiawatha is getting his 7th in the country ranking from scoring defense. That's not a bad category to be 7th in.

Of course, if you demand a total defense stat, Total Defense was still a respectable 25th. Is that "anywhere near" 7th?

Thanks. Yeah when I talk about defense, "scoring" is usually the default ranking that matters most. But that's just me.

And he really needs to explain why improvement should be expected any time a change is made. What? Why would anyone have expected that group to have shown improvement given the situation?

No, 25th isn't anywhere near 7th. That being said, it is respectable.

LOL. So they allowed the 7th least points, the 9th least points per possession, and the 25th least yards, and you think they weren't anywhere near the 7th ranked defense?

Would you rather be 7th or 25th? Seems that most would rather be 7th. ;)
