In what areas specifically are Tobin and Gettis really struggling right now?
Blocking.
Yeah not like they were mauling people yesterday and opening gaping holes or anything.

Fans love to have 1-2 punching bags on the OL even though they typically have no idea other than when they give up a sack. Tobin has been good since the ISU game. Gettis is a very good run blocker who has improved this year in pass pro and has the nastiest on-field demeanor of anyone on the OL.
The biggest physical mistake on the OL yesterday was made by Reiff. Ferentz has ben physically handled more than anyone else on the OL.
Tobin didn't touch his guy on at least one of the sacks. D-tackle went right between him and Ferentz. I suppose it could have been Ferentz's assignment, but there was no one else for Tobin to block.

Tobin and Gettis are bad on pass blocking.

Chandler was awful.

Yes he won some road games (he went 2-3 on the road that year)

He beat an ISU team when special teams blocked 47 kicks and Marcus effing Shnoor ran in from about 50 yards out. W

He got destroyed at MSU. L
He played horrible at Ohio State. L
He played one of the worst games ever at Purdue. Ramon Ochoa is still wide open on that first quarter throw. No one was within 25 yards of him, Chandler could have granny shot the damn football and completed the pass yet overthrew him by 10 yards. L

The Wisconsin game was arguably the worst quarterbacked win in Iowa history (Jake against MSU is prolly #1 but this one was close). Chandler was like 9-27. Iowa's first td was the result of a 54 yard Fred Russel run and a reverse to Ochoa. Their second TD was on a short field because of Jovan Johnsons interception. Their 3rd TD Considine set them up at the 1 yard line. The rest of the game was 2 field goals and a lot of punts and int/fumbles by Chandler. If Chandler would have had Meyer instead of Kaeding that game Iowa would have lost.

I'm not defending Vandenburg because he made some horrible decisions yesterday, but Chandler was not good.

Vandy needs a QB coach. I have very little hope that he will improve much from this year to next. I just haven't seen it with Iowa QBs.

just for the record:

Chandler at Wisconsin: 8-26, 66 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 7 rushes for 23 yards
Jake vs. Michigan St: 5-15, 53 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 3 rushes for -2 yards

I'm still going with Jake vs. Michigan State because I think he was 3-13 in regulation, but I had forgotten how bad Chandler was at Wisconsin.

I know Chandler had 1 fumble in that game as well, might have had 2. The 2003 and 2004 teams won because of their defenses and special teams, not because of the offense.

Iowa's problem now is they are the same offense but have a pretty bad defense and ok special teams.

Speaking of Nate Kaeding - he was a better QB than Vandenberg.

i kicked a paint bucket and it exploded all over my garage. I had to pause the game to clean it up, when i unpaused it, they promptly recovered the onside kick. I hadn't done anything like that in a long time.

The people that sat beside me were nice and it wasn't as cold as last year. That's all I have to say positive about the time spent in TCF......

I really liked that stadium but the "first down" and sweet caroline ... felt like I was in Ames. There must be a public address template for losing programs somewhere.
