Good news, I think.
It is surprising, but great news for a lot of reasons.

He was going to be behind Cook, Garza, Kreiner, Pemsel at the PF/C and behind Wieskamp, Baer and Dailey at the SF position, so it makes sense for him being a 4 year player.

With that and CJ Fredrick also announced as a redshirt, Fran literally can't go any deeper than 10 players. Riley Till would be the emergency 11th option.

It is so enjoyable watching an Iowa game knowing that Brady Ellingson will not play.

The University of Iowa has not lost a basketball game in which Connor McCaffery has played.

That is all.

Connor is obviously much better at being a point guard than bohannon. I’m in shock at how much better they look with him running the team. Choo choo

It was so refreshing to see the team hit their free throws (Cook could maybe do a bit better though).

It's a good thing when our bitches center on a guy only shooting 70% from the line.

48 hours ago most of us thought they’d be 2-2, and were hoping that they would just be competitive.

Instead, what we got was them leading for 78 of the 80 minutes, with most of those minutes the lead being in double digits. Just dominating and controlling both games.

They’ll be ranked on Monday and all of the sudden this year looks like it could be fun.

Dear God just stay healthy. We deserve nice things.

Who has a good pulse on IC?

Is this start good enough to get the students involved?

Carver isn’t the greatest arena, but many of the problems have been associated with shitty teams and shitty game day production. Even Kinnick (which is an awesome venue) sort of sucked between 2012-2014. The AD has better people in charge of the game day production, so it seems like Carver could get better with a good team.

Carver is awesome. If this team is ranked and playing well it will be pretty full. It was falling behind but the new sound and scoreboards did a ton for the experience.

It's the quality of basketball that gets people In Carver. The other things are nice, but they aren't reasons people are or aren't going to games.

As recently as 3 years ago we had 12,000 (announced) show up for a team ranked #3 in the country in a conference game, so I am not holding my breath.

Point being that scoreboards, sound systems, don't make any difference in attendance.

I was say they contribute to an overall warmer atmosphere

College basketball attendance has trended somewhat down for a few years now. Hard to buck that trend when the program has struggled, Alford, Lick, etc. Unfortunately there has been a generation that doesn't know much Hawkeye success. Not sure how quickly attendance will return (if ever) to packed out days.

Yeah, I don't think that's true. I was among the 12,000 in attendance to watch Cincinnati play a meaningless game against Green Bay on Friday. I, and probably about 30% of the attendees were there mostly for the stadium experience.

It's quite a thing to watch an event in a state-of-the-art, well-proportioned, aesthetically pleasing building which is chocked full of food options, booze, lounge areas and awesome lighting and sight lines. You just want to go.

Same reason people pay $12 to watch movies in theatres when they could watch them at home for free.

Part of the problem imo is schedule. Used to have regular schedule to fans could rely upon of a game on Wed evening at a normal time followed by a Saturday afternoon contest. Now television demands all of these weird times and schedules. When you don't have enough fan population close by to accommodate these erratic schedules attendance suffers. How many people are you going to draw from the Metro or even CR with a late Wed game or late Sunday.

If they built a downtown arena, Iowa would fill that arena.

Students would show up and it would be a great atmosphere.

Traffic would be a mess, but it is already a mess, so who cares.

I don’t know why people think this. The students don’t care at all. Plus probably even fewer regular fans would come because getting to the arena would be a total disaster.

There are three good bars and other shitty bars within a short walk to carver right now and we still struggle to draw.

Getting to Carver as a student is an absolute pain in the dick.
A new arena would be just a little closer for the west side dorms. The east side dorms would still have a walk similar to what the west side dorms have now, and apparently they don’t go. I mean it would be a little closer, and obviously downtown, but we are talking like 5 minute difference. I dont think that is the difference between going and not going. There’s just little attempt to engage a bunch of kids, half of whom probably cheer for Illinois.

35 years old is pretty ancient for an arena with no real character. I look at an arena that shitty Missouri State has and I would much rather go there.

Move the arena, make parking plentiful, and I think it makes a big difference.

They would care if they could go get bombed at the bars before, walk a few hundred feet to a brand new beautiful arena, then walk a few hundred feet to go drink again or a short walk home.

It also would be the cool place to go right where most of the students like to go anyways.

Carver sucks and they need to build a new arena
Awful seating layout
Too far away for students and shitty parking for the old folks
They also have more than money to do it

Also, obviously it would be better but I’m just saying that it wouldn’t be worth a couple hundred million dollars. Plus you would need new practice space too.

The parking does not suck for old folks. It’s literally right next to carver.

This is all stupid talk anyways, Iowa made the decision to dump something like $50m over the last 5 years into Carver Hawkeye.

The practice facility is there, the offices are there, nothing is changing. Carver Hawkeye will be there for at least another 20 years.

They could still use the practice areas at CHA. No need to have them both in the same facility.

With that said, it would seem like a good investor opportunity to buy up a couple of the those crappy apartment complexes, rezone and establish a nice sports/bar restaurant area with plenty of parking behind Carver. It's still reasonably close to Kinnick to do well in the Fall as well.
