I think they're a decent comparison. Basabe was on better teams and was probably better defensively. Both have been extremely frustrating players.

I just don't think Cook is all that good at basketball and I never really have. He's been fine for Iowa, but he is probably the most frustrating player of the McCaffery era for me.
and the scapegoat emerges.
Scapegoat?!?? Lol. No.

Fran is the problem. Period.
Fran is the problem, but TC is the one that is taking the beating from the Iowa fan.

If he comes back next year, he very well could end up Iowa's #2 all-time leading scorer, top 5 all-time leading rebounder, and have a shooting percentage better than anyone on Iowa's top 30 scoring list.

Sure, he looks like he's disinterested at times, but I prefer to blame that on Fran's offensive scheme that doesn't put him where he needs to be.

I haven't placed any blame on anyone but Fran for any of this.

Discussing frustrating aspects of the games we watch isn't scapegoating. It's just part of the discussion. I said this earlier.

Cook is fantastic at drawing fouls. In fairness to Cook, we're not giving him the best opportunity to succeed given that he is very limited offensively. That's coaching.

There were several times when he got the ball yesterday and just sat there waiting for the double team only to pass out of it. I think his confidence is shot.
Also, Fran is taking the biggest beating of anyone (too much of a beating IMO, even though I do think something needs to change).

Since it would be dumb and crazy to fire Fran.

Timing certainly isn't good but that's not insignificant at Iowa in my opinion.

Just to provide context, the iowa job was voted by coaches as the 11th best job in the current big ten.

And Fran has had us in the top half 6 of his 9 seasons

Cook isn't doing the work he needs to do early to get the ball by the rim. He keeps getting it 8 feet out, and when the double comes his only move is to face up, and he cant shoot, so shot fakes don't work...
Cook and Garza and every post on our team should be forced to watch video upon video of Megan Gustafson working to get position down low. She treats it like a war and she refuses to lose
She's got the McHale going for her, she's moving immediately upon getting the ball. It's great to watch.
I’d argue Pemsl is actually pretty good at this.

Agreed. He’s very crafty once he gets to his spot too. Wonder how his jumper is coming along.

Cook is a great player and due to no other options, i figure he'll be back. same with Moss. weird to think either would transfer at this point.

the team should be legit good next year. in the end, when remembering how abysmal last year was, the improvement is about what you would hope for or reasonaably expect from last year. won a lot more games. pulled some out at the end. the defense went from perhaps the worst defense most of us have ever seen a power conference team play to merely an embarrassment.

i expect similar incremental improvement for next year considering we lose close to nothing. i think mid 20 wins and a 3-5 slot in the big ten next year is reasonable expectation for this group. basically what we all tricked ourselves into believing this year was after our soft non-con.

Losing Baer is not a big deal. i think he was an overrated defender. for a white guy former walk-on, i think he displayed pathetic hustle on defense. he was our only shot blocker, and that will be missed. but overall i noticed him with his arms down on defense, him with his back inexplicably turned from the ball, him with lazy close outs, as much or more than anyone else. i think Nunge will replace the shot blocking.

Garza is fools gold in my opinion. his 3 point shots are basically a turnover at this point. hes very efficient in post offense, but considering we already have Cook who is similarly efficient down low, he's value down there suffers tremendously from diminishing returns. The real problem with Garza is that his 12 points or whatever a game is easily offset by his mind boggling slow feet and lack of jumping ability on defense. a true liability on that end of the floor. on a team already bad at defense, this is a killer. it's tough for me to even guess who is the bigger defensive liability, Garza or Bohannonn, but it's clear i think that on a team bereft of guard talent, bohannon HAS to play. Garza does not. I think Garza seems like a wonderful guy and great teammate but i think he's a net liability and doesn't bring anything to the table that more well rounded players do not already bring. In short i hope Nunge gets a lot of his minutes next year. i think his shot blocking will be an incredible boost to the club.

Cook is highly flawed. but he is still very good and doesn't deserve the trashing he gets. i blame the coaches for using him improperly.

I'm not going to dig because this is mentioned about once per day on one thread or another... most people seem to be of the opinion he will leave *somehow* be it by going pro or transferring, and yes i am sure i have read talk about people wanting or thinking he will transfer to Mizzou or elsewhere cuz his pro prospects outside Europe are poor.

I think the Mizzou shit is a running joke, Jim.

He leaves to play pro in some third world country or he stays. No one here thinks he transfers.

Seems a tad premature to declare Garza fool's gold. It's entirely possible he improves to the point of playing passable defense over the next 3 years. Cook is not his equal in terms of efficiency in the post. It isn't even close. Also, him taking 3s is on Fran.

Iowa basketball ditches Twitter in hopes of finding spark
The Hawkeyes won’t be on social media in the coming days as they prepare to find their groove again.

Log onto Twitter between now and the Big Ten Tournament, and you’ll surely see plenty of entertaining memes, loud opinions, and up-to-date sports news. One thing you won’t see, however, is the Iowa men’s basketball team.

As the Hawkeyes try to find their groove on the court again, they have deleted social media in preparation for the conference tournament, which will begin for them on Thursday when they take on the winner of the Illinois-Northwestern game.

The reason for the lack of posts is simple, really.

“Just to focus on our team and not worry about outside distractions,” Iowa guard Jordan bohannon said.

This isn’t a new phenomenon by any means. Before every NBA playoff run, LeBron James activates “Zero Dark Thirty-23” mode, cutting off access to all social media to focus on his upcoming games, and it has paid off.

After all, he has won three NBA titles and took home Finals MVP all three times.

RELATED: Breaking down the men’s Big Ten Tournament

No matter how James’ regular season goes, he hits a second wind in the postseason and proves why he’s the most dominant player in the league.

That’s exactly what the Hawkeyes are hoping to do in the Big Ten Tournament.

“It’s been present all year, but I don’t think it was necessary,” forward Luka Garza said. “It was just starting to get a little bit more amped up, especially with everything going on. I think it was just a good, clean decision. I wasn’t on Twitter too much anyways, so it’s not really a big effect on my life.”

While staying off Twitter might not have a big impact on most Hawkeyes, their play on the floor has. Iowa has lost four in a row heading into its postseason matchup with its last loss coming in heartbreaking fashion.

Iowa led Nebrantska for most of the game on Sunday but blew a 7-point lead in 47 seconds to lose its fourth straight.

The Hawkeyes showed their potential earlier in the season, consistently finding themselves ranked in the AP Top 25 and scoring big wins, including a dominant victory over then-No. 5 Michigan in Carver-Hawkeye.

“We executed fairly well in certain situations, not so much in others, and that’s what happens in the course of a long season,” Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said. “You try to continue to have a businesslike approach. You want to enjoy the ride to a degree, but there’s always that businesslike approach that you have to have when you’re preparing to play games at this level.”

Iowa hasn’t won a game in March since taking down South Dakota in the NIT in 2016-17. The Hawkeyes are 0-5 since then.

Iowa has shown its potential all season, even recently beating one of the hottest teams in the Big Ten in Indiana on Feb. 22. Now, it’s a matter of putting it all together and executing during the most important stretch of the season.

“I don’t think we would change anything — just keep being ourselves,” forward Tyler Cook said. “We don’t want to second-guess what we know how to do. We were one of the hottest teams in the country earlier for a reason, so we just want to get back to being ourselves.”

Saying Garza is a net liability and thinking he should lose his minutes is mind-numbingly stupid (no offense)

Nobody even talking about the BIG tournament which starts in an hour. Lets all remember that this season wasn't all bad, and that Iowa actually finished in the top half and earned a bye for tonight. We get the winner of NW/Ill, who play @ 8 PM tonight. Our game is the last one tomorrow at ~ 8. March situations!

Not completely sure why, but if you forced me to put $100 on Iowa winning a Big Ten tournament game, or getting to the Sweet 16, I'd go with Sweet 16.

I have no confidence in them winning a Big 10 game right now.

Saying Garza is a net liability and thinking he should lose his minutes is mind-numbingly stupid (no offense)
It's not that crazy to say he has been a net liability for the second half of the year. He's the worst defensive big man in the conference. He's a bad rebounder. He takes 2+ threes a game and only shoots 28% & he is a terrible passer.

He's great in the post and a good mid range shooter. If he is not hitting shots he absolutely is a net liability. He shouldn't lose minutes but only because the alternative is Kriener.

He will never be a shot blocker or laterally quick but I'm hopeful that he can improve as an upperclassmen with a healthy off-season. The cyst put him behind to start and then not long after that he was held out/limited for 2-3 weeks with the ankle. I'm pretty confident he has a very good work ethic.

I think we should be a top 3-5 team in the conference next year

Now excuse me while I use 10,000 characters to rip on all our players.
