So if my math is right the program has been nationally ranked during 5 of the past 7 seasons.

From watching UConn and Oregon games I felt like we could play much better. Still some dumb turnovers and not so great shots. Cook has improved his game but still gets cavalier with the ball and passing. In particular bohannon has not done much at all yet this year. As team we have not made a lot of 3s yet and we have the guys to do that. Weiskamp is having growing pains and I still think he's be more consistent with some big performances by the end of the year.

If Garza balls out on the reg like he did in the UConn game we're not going to lose very many games.

And last season sucked for sure, but in general that is evidence that Fran has had Iowa relevant most years. Some will argue that they want more and that’s ok, but Fran has met or exceeded the pre-season expectations for 6 or 7 of the 8 years he’s been at Iowa. And I think the best is still yet to come

@Hawkeye_Pierce , we need a ruling.

It will be awesome if Iowa has a great season and it's enough to get Xavier Foster to commit

It's fun how poorly Wieskamp has looked so far. That makes me perversely excited.

During chat during the first game of the year Doug claimed he was the second best player on the team. During the second game he said he was the best player on the team. At this point he's consensus All-American

Actually I started doubting my memory so I checked and it turns out that we were never ranked in 12-13. So 4 of 6.

I also seem to remember the 14-15 season being better but we were only ranked two weeks all year.

That's the best part imo - we won both games and yet we were far from playing lights out. Jordan and Joe both kinda sucked both games. Get them humming along with the threes and it could be a pretty fun season.

I hope they pull some gimmick to try and get the students into the arena for that Wisconsin game at the end of this month. The place should be rocking for that one.

Promise Frisbee catching dogs at halftime and maybe an extra session of the burrito lift.

I wonder if it would be feasible to somehow redo the seating to put more fans closer to the court. That concrete ring between the court and the stands is a big problem. Getting the fans closer (particularly the students) would improve the atmosphere and the home court advantage. But, that would require concrete work and might require equipment too big to get into the arena. It also might be too big a project to finish in an offseason.

Garza has the most labored gait I've ever seen. Then he compounds with the black shoes. I'm starting to think that's deliberate because you see him and you gawd this guy is a plodder and terrible athlete, but I think he's deceptively athletic including reasonably quick feet when not running down the court.

I've always thought the seating in Carver should be redone. Even when the arena is full, it looks bad on TV. The shot below is a typical camera angle during game action - there's so much empty space where fans aren't visible.

Compare that to a similar view at Wisconsin - between actually utilizing the space behind the basket and better laid out seating & stairs, it looks much more full:

Obviously actually having more people at the games would help, but the layout of Carver doesn't help the atmosphere.

He’s the fucker that gets picked last at the Y because he looks like he smells like mayonnaise but then lights your ass up and keeps the court for 3 hours.

Sure, if you ignore the fact he’s nearly 7 feet tall.

Just a ridiculous number of double wide stairways.

God forbid someone have to climb over more than 5 people to get to their seat.

He will end up being the second or third best player on the team.

Also, he played poorly in NYC. The first 2 games he was the best player on the court.

Shocking that a Freshman would struggle in his first big road trip.

My only legitimate concern with Weiskamp at this point is that his his shooting percentage and misses on open shots is higher than it should be. One of his FTs attempts looked funky too. Would hate for there to be a mental/confidence issue which is harder to bounce back from than just having to get adjusted to the athleticism/speed of the game at the college level.

I'm quasi with doug except that its hard to predict he'll better this year than Garza, Cook, and bohannon.

doug - you have to admit he missed wide open shots that he would have nailed in HS. Look at his misses at 14:32 and 5:00 in the first half and look at his ft miss at 15:49.

ISU is looking good against a surprisingly bad looking Arizona team. ISU is led by 43-year-old Marial Shayok.

There is nothing surprising about this Arizona team looking bad unless you’ve missed the past couple of years. It’s going to take awhile for them to recover. Iowa State is like 40 spots higher than arizona in kenpom.

We should do a revenue bond issue to change how geometry works.

Watching Iowa home games on tv vs every other arena and Iowa’s seating setup just looks awful with all the stairs. No idea why they get the need to bring every section of stairs all the way down to the court. They should have stopped at least every other one at the fold outs.

In all seriousness though that’s the best solution. Basically create a faux concourse 2/3-3/4 of the way down so the main aisles don’t need to reach the floor. Bring in portable concession bins for that level and honestly maybe install a couple escalators for the old people that pay the bills. Take out the top 15 rows on the side opposite the scorers for suites that stop at the baseline. Hang beer bongs from the suites to the students.

Can we leave the Angle of the Dangle theorem the way it is currently?
