I really excited about Nunge. He’s more athletic than given credit for with natural post moves and a great shot. He will end up a 12-14 ppg scorer at some point. He reminds me of a typical Michigan post.
Yep, the redshirt is perfect for him. Skilled, pretty athletic and now will be stronger. Him and Garza together could be a bitch to defend with shooters around them.
bohannon / Moss / Wieskamp / Nunge / Garza as a starting lineup is boner ready. Add in Connor / Patrick / Kreiner / Toussaint / Pemsl as the second group and that is pretty fucking great.
Pretty pasty lineup

I know we all know this, but it bears repeating. Two buzzer beaters and a similar late shot at Indiana have been fun, but this team better start playing something approaching defense, or there's a NW State-like exit waiting for them in the dance.

bow away. the way this team has been defending, they could easily go on a late-season fran slide and end up 10-10.

Iowa is better suited for the tournament than many I am a giant douche teams because we see new officiating crews that don’t allow the typical conference thug ball.

Defense wasn't bad yesterday. The turnovers that led to easy points were the biggest issue. They had some fortunate luck on a couple of rebounds of bricks and blocked shots that fell right to them.

And the way they have playing overall, they could end up 14-6 or 13-7.

one bad thing was them continually coming out to guard the big man who cant throw it in the ocean at 18 feet.

Cook is not coming back
I won't be surprised either way but everyone said this last year too and he isn't much more likely to get drafted this year. It's pretty clear no one actually knows what is going on with Cook.

He was the very last player in the country to say he was returning. There is a shot he is going to be coming off a 1st Team All-Big Ten selection and a potential tourney run.

Maybe he ends up liking the success and wants to return, but I would bet that he is gone.

Don't take this the wrong way as I am sure Fran would rather have him back a thousand times over, but it won't be the worst thing if he does go. They have an absolute logjam waiting next year with the roster. If Cook comes back you are looking at either disappointing the shit out of multiple players or forcing someone out along with maybe being forced to redshirt Pat.

Cook / Garza / Kreiner / Pemsl / Nunge all can't play the 4/5 and then add in Pat and Toussaint with only Baer leaving is an issue.

This is dumb to talk about in February, but oh well it is sort of fun.

Dream scenario is that Cook comes back and Dailey and Pemsl transfer. Toussaint is so good that Connor can go play baseball and come back if there is an emergency.

Realistic scenario is that Cook leaves, Dailey transfers and Frederick continues to have to sit and not play much. Toussaint gets his feet wet.

Sort of weird scenario is that Cook comes back, nobody wants to transfer, Fran is forced to redshirt Pat and the team chemistry is fucked due to minutes and unhappy players.

I see Toussaint taking about 10 of the backup PG minutes. Connor will still playing a lot especially when we need size and experience out there but also see him taking some of Baers minutes.

I've kind of thought that Connor is more of a 3, but unless you redshirt Patrick, that's not happening.

Ideally, Dailey goes to a mid-major, and as long as you keep winning the guys at the end of the bench are ok with it.

Having a hard time getting excited about a 5’10 guy but maybe he can be a poor man’s Xavier Simpson type.

what's the story on wieskamp's back? I remember somebody -- nlp? -- saying last year he'd had some back issues in hs. the espn article mentioned joe had been "battling back problems."

it's 100% pure "wat????" but I've always thought that with his size, he might be more effective as a point forward, if he showedhe could rebound at the 3 and play solid d there. second ball handler, passer, gets garbage points.

no way in hell that will ever happen. patrick is the backup 3 next year and connor is a pg for as long as he plays basketball.

Pemsl will be an important piece for the inevitable “bad Kriener” games when he can’t even be on the floor. Hope he stays. Dailey is the dude that we wouldn’t miss. Not that I don’t appreciate his defensive efforts this season.

I thought Dailey was going to wind up being a nice role player after he shot the ball pretty well last year and didn't totally embarass himself as the backup PG but yeah he just looks lost on offense this year. I'll give him some credit for actually trying on defense but I just feel bad for him on the other end. Getting a fresh start at a mid major where he's going to have a bigger physical advantage and isn't best known for being the guy the radio announcer publicly trashed is probably for the best. He can still close his college career on a high note like Ellingson is at Drake

I hope he is close to graduating or can by the end of the summer. He could be a nice player for a year on a team out east closer to home.

I do not believe that Cook would get drafted as the NBA has decidedly moved away from bigs that cannot shoot from outside.

However, I can fully imagine Cook believing that he will be drafted and leaving school.

@HiawathaHawk @MikeyJoe Is there a way to export KenPom data to create pivot tables/charts?

I am interested in taking the data from lineup combination tool and creating a comparison of players ORtg when Connor is and is not on the court. Particularly Jordan.

Actually fuck that, someone do it for me.

Again this is what people said last year too and he came back. He's declared twice, gotten feedback that he isn't a draft pick, and come back both times. It's unlikely he's going to get a different message from NBA people this time. If he wants to go make money in Europe or take a run at the G League instead of finishing school I wouldn't begrudge him that at all but I don't get why it's a foregone conclusion aside from all the Iowa writers who hate him and have been trying to push him out the door from like the moment he got on campus saying it is.

For some reason I remembered him testing the waters briefly after his freshman year too but I dunno what I was thinking of. Either way he was supposed to be a lock to go last year and then came back when he realized he wasn't getting picked. I don't know why he'd be a certainty to stay in this time if he gets similar feedback, which he probably will

I think you're not remembering correctly, Bob.

Nobody with a brain thought he was a lock to go last year. There were people that certainly thought he would, but nobody in any significant numbers thought he was a lock to go.

Supposedly he had a scenario with a team where they wanted to draft him in the second round and he decided to pass that up. I don't know if that was him saving face or not, but it does seem like they had to reason with him to get him to come back.

I can see him not caring after this season. My guess he declares and signs with an agent right after the season.

I actually saw Cook on a draft board (2nd round) for the first time ever this past week. At this point, neither decision is probably the wrong decision. He can make money playing somewhere but probably not the NBA.

So 3/4 of the games Pemsl will be an important piece

This is accurate. I don't know who all was talking to him at the time from Iowa, but he came to the realization that making the league would be even less of a guarantee in the scenario presented to him. I think he's gone after this year, but I also don't know how much of what he hears from teams will change from what they told him last year. That's the only thing that really gives me pause to think he might even consider returning, not knowing how close he is to a degree, etc.

So just to be clear, none of you have the slightest fucking inkling of a clue if Cook will go pro or stay in college next year, and that won't ever change regardless of the dozens of hundreds of thousands of paragraphs you all have written or will write about it. Accurate? Okay, cool

Nick Ward broke his hand and likely out the rest of the season.

Good chance that Michigan State could lose more and fall back in the standings. Maybe the 3 seed is up for grabs as well.

They have Rutgers, Nebrantska, and Michigan at home. Indiana and Michigan on the road. I can’t see them losing 3 of those.

If he truly is out the rest of the year, then bring those MSU fuckers on in the BTT.

Dude killed us in both games this year, and in the past.

A little late to the party here, but I think a beefed up Nunge, in an ideal scenario, would be best utilized at the five. He doesn’t really create any match-up problems playing at the four, but if he could hold up physically/defensively, he would create a lot of problems at the five with his athleticism and shooting ability.

I would love this but Fran almost always tries to play guys down a position rather than up.
