Iowa has no quality wins. If Iowa wins out, they have wins over USC (likely ranked), Nebrantska, and Minnesota as their best wins. That's not enough on their resume at 9-3.

Yup, no chance of playoff. 9-3 against this schedule would still be something to be proud of. It would just come with a really bitter taste because of how close the three losses were. But when this schedule came out it was one I looked at and said “shit, bowl eligibility is going to be difficult.”

I don’t see the Big Ten getting only 3 teams to the CFP. Texas Tech isn’t losing again, so the Big 12 gets 1. The ACC is dogshit and not getting 2 teams again. If the Hawks can take care of business the rest of the way, there is a glimmer of hope a 4th place Big Ten team at 9-3 team can make the playoffs.
7 at-large spots

the SEC is getting 3 at a minimum - Ole Miss, Georgia, and one of A&M/Bama. if any of those teams don't, it's probably because they lost to Oklahoma (Bama) or Texas (UGA/A&M) so it kinda slots 1-for-1. I also think Georgia Tech gets in if they beat Georgia but lose the ACC (or don't make it because these conferences are stupid big with complex tiebreakers).

Notre Dame is getting 1. The Big Ten is getting 2 - Ohio State/Indiana loser and probably Oregon (who does have loseable games).

At that point you have one remaining spot. Michigan and USC are better positioned to get a 4th B10 spot than Iowa - if USC beats Iowa, you could argue that USC @ Oregon is a de facto playoff game for USC the way that yesterday was for Iowa. Michigan is definitely in the CFP if they win out to get to 10-2 with a win over OSU. Texas and OU have a chance to play in and get a 5th SEC team. Vanderbilt can finish 10-2 in a much better conference with better wins than Iowa. Utah and BYU are going to have 10 wins with better wins than Iowa.

It isn't happening.

Huh?

Edit: nevermind, misread your post. I gotcha.

It’s like it requires a little more emphasis than Albany

The Iowa State loss, per usual, will be the most embarrassing stain on the season at its end. And the consequences could be enormous.
Losing to them got old in 1978. Now it's just embarrassing, and a politically imposed risk we have to endure each year.

This is why a 16 team playoff will make more sense moving forward. You keep more teams in it later into the season. While Ohio State etc. will always have more talent, the middle of the pack SEC and Big Ten teams will acquire enough with money and the transfer portal to make them more competitive than they previously would have been.

Yep, if this was a 16 team playoff Iowa would still be firmly in the mix. You can make it in at 9-3 with a resume like Iowa might have at the end of the year.

I wouldn't mind 16 because on the surface it would seem to encourage teams to schedule more competively in the non-conference. Instead of scheduling light to hope for 2 or less losses teams would probably know they need more differentiating wins knowing a "good" 9-3 record probably makes it.

Disagree - 12 is a good number. If this Iowa team went 10-2 they would’ve deserved to be there and would’ve been.

Further expansion is just going to put more SEC teams in more often than not.

It will also put more Big Ten teams in. Further expansion to 16 is good, but no further.

What is the most likely kickoff time for MSU next Saturday? 11 on BTN?

Since they put this on BTN, Iowa isn’t required to be on BTN next week. I would be surprised if it wasn’t 2:30 or 3 on BTN or FS1 though. The whole Big Ten slate is garbage next week besides USC at Oregon which assume is the CBS or NBC game.

Did Seth Anderson quit the team? He hasn’t been on any injury reports and hasn’t gotten any reps the last few games.
