From an IU fan on another Iowa site:
I come in peace. I think it is NIL. The $7 million figure you guys were throwing around earlier for salary is what we were hearing NIL was set to be (with $5M/yr being the salary I think-which is a little above average but not crazy). IU is also saying they will double the revenue share amount for basketball too. College basketball is crazy competitive and yes, Indiana can be a tough fishbowl to coach in, but Iowa is apparently having to compete with a hand tied behind its back from an NIL perspective. Yeah, you can win doing that but if you don't have to as a coach, why would you?
And FWIW, I think the current model sucks. NIL is pay for play, it is what the shoe companies used to do for teams like Duke and Kentucky spread out across the country and injected with steroids. The dirty not so secret being that the majority of the money flowing has nothing to do with the average alumni donors. Indiana's is driven by a few billionaires and multi-millionaires. Our $500 donations are nice for them to have but that is drops in a bucket. We have the Cooks, the heir to the Simon malls (name on Assembly Hall), and Cuban (and he isn't a big NIL driver) that can be big backers. You need at least one billionaire who will fund your NIL or you are on the outside looking in no matter how great you are at fundraising.
