oof
I was overserved
I was overserved
Wasn't Haluska a junior? I swear he played the year after the NW St. heartbreaker. This is beyond overserved, Jimmie, it is full retardation.
Off the top of my head the senior trio's better than Marble/Basabe/McCabe:
- Marble/Armstrong/Horton
- Horner/Bruner/Haluska
- Evans/Recker/Henderson
- Earl/Barnes/Lookingbill

Kinnick Spring Fling Reply
EduneerHawk and I were fortunate to take the limo ride with the Iowa Coaches before the annual Spring Fling in CB, Iowa. As always, a great time. I will try to recap what was discussed. Eduneer and Kafter can certainly chime in.
First, let's start with Coach Speraw. Have to say he is shy at first. He will let you ask the questions and respond. If you have nothing to ask, he will not fill the space. He felt the NIT experience was priceless. Teams rarely get the opportunity to play that many games in a short time period with that kind of pressure and intensity for each game. You do not get the opportunity to experience this pressure even during the I am a giant douche season. Feels this will help next year. I sense the staff is confident they will make the Dance next year.
As for Oglesby, he said that he needs to get an "assassin's" mentality. Felt that Oglesby was so used to having more time to choose the shoot he really wanted in HS. The same is not true in college. You have a shot clock where the opportunities do not come often and require you to look to shoot first or you will miss the opportunity. Said he shoots "lights out" in practice (we have all heard this before).
Talked about how Iowa literally stole Gessell from NE in the recruiting war. Gessell was all NU but for the signing until Fran took over. Talked about how Fran out hustled Sadler and assured Gessell he would play point.
Talked about the athleticism of Olesani. Phenomel athlete who could guard the other team's PG if needed. Beats everyone else in their drills. Talked about how Olesani and Woodbury helped the team improve so much on defense. As compared to the year before when they had to rely on McCabe and White to guard the paint. He mentioned that they worked really hard last summer on defensive drills as opposed to offensive drills. It paid off.
He feels Marble needs to get more consistent and stronger to make the NBA. He has the skill set and has great size, just needs to build more bulk. Says Marble works hard every day so, the NBA would not be a pipe dream. His work ethic is what will put him over the top.
Had to talk about Jok a little. Not much different from the interview that was just published. Jok has it, Will need to adjust to the college game. Obviously they feel he can.
I did tease him about being in CB and not with the Nets. He laughed, told me his wife was quizzing him on whether he made some decisions without her input and whether they would be moving soon.
One other comment on Speraw. Hiring Speraw was a stroke of genius. The guy can flat-out coach, knows his BB. Hope he stays for awhile.
Coach Ferentz- Asked the Captain if he will find anyone that can block Big Carl. He smiled and said that was nice to see. Carl had really underperformed before this spring. He is really high on all the tackles (Cooper, Johnson, etc.). Worried about depth with his DE's. I told him I was surprised at how well the D-line played at the spring scrimmage, that his son was not happy with the O-line that afternoon. Kirk chuckled and said that getting Brian mad was probably a good thing.
He really likes all three quarterbacks and feels they will all push each other. Did not give a hint on who would start.
Did not talk too much about individual players. I asked him about Nate Meier, the kid from Tabor, Iowa, being from that part of the world. Says the kid is as tough as you will find and very athletic. However, it has been a huge ajdustment being the biggest kid on the playground in HS. I also suspect there is an adjustment academically and socially as well. Told him a story I heard about Riley Reiff in camp last year when he took it to E. Suh. Kirk said it did not surprise him one bit. Reiff has a mean streak and does not back down to anyone. Said that even with all his NFL money Reiff still drinks Busch Lite. I told him that most everyone I know from SD likes their beer cheap and cold. Miller Lite is considered high brow.
I asked him what unit improved the most this spring. He surprised me with his answer. He felt the RB's improved the most from last year. I think he is happy they are all healthy and can contribute. Next unit is the DL. He also feels that the DB's are also improving nicely.
Overall we talked about the challenges of getting kids to adjust to college life and the life of a student athlete. By far the biggest challenge. If they don't adjust, they don't play. If they don't play you can't compete. I think he was addressing the attrition from a couple years ago.
You can tell he really likes where the team is at and likes his staff. I am cautiously optimistic for next year. I know there are plenty of people wweho love to bash this guy, we are ls lucky to have him. Quality individual who wants to win. Pretty confident he will find a way this year.
Again, this is a great event for Hawkeye junkies. You cannot imagine how accessible the coaches are. the Kinnick I-Club does a great job on this event. The limo ride with the coaches is dynamite idea. If you are willing to pay a little money, you have an opportunity to sit with these coaches and talk Hawkey sports. We are so lucky our coaches are willing to attend thes functions. The same is not true in NE. One of my partners is chairman of one of the large sports charity banquets in Omaha and cannot get any of the coaches to come unless they pay the coach a stipend. They were so desparate this year the are flying Charlie McBride (retired NU asst. coach) to Omaha to give a speech.
Lol. I'm sure his reticence was completely due to shyness. That second paragraph is hilarious. Poor Speraw.
Guys that spend hours talking to HS kids and parents are usually pretty shy and introverts. As usual, cid's anaylisis is top notch.Lol. I'm sure his reticence was completely due to shyness. That second paragraph is hilarious. Poor Speraw.
He's right on this one. People trumpeting that it is sexist are the ones making it sexist. They're the ones associating a color with a gender. Hayden ALWAYS said it was a psychological ploy because pink was a soothing color. Nothing more, nothing less.A Cid post from today:
Pink creates a mood... didn't see the segment, but groups suggesting removal are simply promoting their own agenda and noise.
The Pink was for a mood, nothing more and nothing less. Nice to hear story used Kinnick as an example.
Good morning Hawk Fans!
He came out of high school at the same time as Brunner and Horner, but he transferred from ISU and redshirted a year, so he wound up leaving a year later than they did. He was really good as a senior on a team that had pretty much nothing outside he and Tyler Smith.Nope, he wasn't a Senior. The Iowa website is fucked.
They also had Thunder Doug Thomas. He came out of high school at the same time as Brunner and Horner, but he transferred from ISU and redshirted a year, so he wound up leaving a year later than they did. I'd say Horner/Brunner/Hansen is better than Marble/Basabe/McCabe too though.
Anyone still these coaches are overpaid? This has to be the most uncomfortable and longest limo ride of all time. Coaches earn their money on this night.

Speraw desperately trying to either chew his tongue off or daydreaming he could teleport off planet. That second paragraph is hilarious. Poor Speraw.
Freeman was okay. Tate was okayish eventually but pretty bad that season. I thought Henderson sucked. They did have Looby who should have been pretty good but they never knew what to do with him. They also had Thunder Doug Thomas. He came out of high school at the same time as Brunner and Horner, but he transferred from ISU and redshirted a year, so he wound up leaving a year later than they did. I wouldn't say that Haluska's senior year had nothing outside of Tyler Smith. Freeman, Henderson and Tate were all pretty solid players. Alford thought that team would have been better had Alex Thompson stuck around. LOL.

Don't worry, my dad learned how to use email/internet and the iPad a few years ago and he sends me retarded email forwards as if he just discovered fire.Sometimes I wonder if that guy has some sort of mental disability or if he's just an awful writer.
My dad recently had my brother help him sign up for an account on a message board for owners of a particular car. This is a man who is a very successful business owner. And according to my brother, his first attempt at a post looked, well, let's say challenged.
This is funny shit.Don't worry, my dad learned how to use email/internet and the iPad a few years ago and he sends me retarded email forwards as if he just discovered fire.
He reads posts on the Quad City Times and is astounded that people actually write opinions on the internet and thinks ESPN Streak for the Cash is the greatest thing ever invented.
My dad farms and this year he decided to get GPS...don't think I've ever heard someone cuss as much as he did this spring. John Deere set it up for him the first time (you hit like 3 buttons). He didn't realize that starting a new field would require changing the lines. He went from planting north/south to east/west. He started going down the row and hit the 'autotrac' button, and the tractor turned 90 degrees and he was so confused that he let it ride while hitting buttons forgetting to raise the planter. It was a thing of beauty. If I would not have gotten in the cab a second sooner, I'm pretty sure that computer would be sitting in a ditch along a gravel road. This is funny shit.Don't worry, my dad learned how to use email/internet and the iPad a few years ago and he sends me retarded email forwards as if he just discovered fire.

My dad "watches" Yankees games on whatever the Yankees website is - where they basically do a written play-by-play with some sorta lame pitch-by-pitch graphics - and he thinks it's the cat's meow, except when it freezes up and he incredulously swears and cusses at it and whines to his wife in the hopes she'll try to fix it.
Still hasn't tested the email or message board waters, however.
My grandma joined Facebook. It's bizarre but she likes seeing random pics of my kids.My dad farms and this year he decided to get GPS...don't think I've ever heard someone cuss as much as he did this spring. Not as nice as a BJ, regardless of day of month or week, imo.How nice is it when the first day of a new month arrives on Saturday? Or should I say, how nice is it that the last Day of the month hits a Friday?
Legend12Just how bad is Iowa?
Just how good is Iowa?
Seriously, some have 12-0 Ohio State #1 heading into 2013, just 6-7 in 2011 and a play or 2 from losses in 2012 to Cal, MSU, Purdue and Indiana to name a few.
Is Iowa any good in the trenches? #8 in the Big Ten? If Iowa is going to begin to recover, the O-Line better improve.
Does Iowa have a Top 10 starting corp in the LB corp?
Can the QB trio be worse than Vandenberg's senior season?
Will the Iowa's special teams help the Hawkeyes right the ship in 2013?
Can OC Greg Davis find success above the Mason Dixon Line?
Is Phil Parker ready for Year 2 as DC similar to OC Tim Beck's sophomore campaign at UNL last fall?
One question, can Kirk Ferentz withstand another sub-.500 season?
It's interesting seeing Anthony Hitchens make pre-season all-Big Ten. Stats are nice, but is even #1 or #2 among Iowa's best LBs?
Who will be Iowa's impact player in 2013?
Who will step up as a senior? It was a popular them in 2003 and 2004. How long ago that was that, after the past couple of seasons.
Iowa should be in the bowl picture again despite the predictions of #6 in Legends Division.
Iowa will be a dangerous opponent, other than maybe at Ohio State?
Will the defense play physical in 2013, as one assistant suggested the 2012 Iowa defense was capable of?
Kirk Ferentz has provided the Good, the Bad and Ugly over the years at Iowa. 2002, 2004 and 2009 were good to fine. 2012 was awful.
2013 may not be a strong vintage, but by 2014, Iowa may be a little more interesting.
On Iowa!
peace
