In terms of former players I would love to see on Frans staff he’s probably at the top of my list. Guy understands how to play more than any Iowa player in recent memory.

That doesn't matter as much to him. Being a head coach was a higher priority for him.

Biding your time as a D1 assistant is a looooooong process before you are even considered for a head job. And there's no guarantee either.

If I had to wager, I bet Dean-O not never getting a D1 head coaching job is more likely than eventually getting one.

Just depends how long you want to grind it out.

Downside of that route is a LOT of long bus rides to really shitty towns in the middle of nowhere. At least as a D1 assistant you get the perks that a bigger budget brings. Not sure which way is "Better" than the other if the ultimate goal is to be a D1 head coach.

I would say neither is really “better” except for pay. The expectations are typically much lower at smaller schools, the travel sucks, the hours sucks, the season is long. All of these things still exist at the bigger schools or higher divisions, but your hours are typically worse (especially over the summer) and recruiting is harder and unless you are a decent school the travel still sucks. Coaching is interesting because you see some guys stay at D3 or NAIA schools for 15-20+ years and just remaining content.

His wife worked in medical sales. He was only here for two years then went to a lower level d1 last year.

My point was that if your recruiting pipeline is places like Des Moines and the secondary market in STL and KC, it kind of puts you in different circles from a recruiting standpoint than an assistant at a high level D1 school (aka Oliver).
