I think Michigan is going to be hurting at the PG spot and that will make them hurt everywhere else. They were able to do well last year because Burke made it extremely easy on the other guys. Hardaway did as well.

McGary, Robinson and Stauskas are all players who are complementary in nature, not players who can get their own shot for the most part. Stauskas is catch and shoot. McGary is a garbage man. Robinson runs the break and dunks.

They will be good, but they finished 5th last year and I see the same thing again.
They're tough to peg because so much depends on Walton and no one has seen him yet. I'm really high on Robinson though. I think he defered a lot to the older guys last year but he is crazy talented. I think he becomes their go to guy and one of the best players in the conference.

I think Robinson is great, but I haven't seen him do much other than run the break. His jumper is weak and not sure if he can create yet. He also has a more introverted personality and will be interesting to see if he steps up.

I think the guy who's going to make the biggest step up for Michigan is the kid we tried to recruit--Caris Levert. He showed great range on his jumper and can put the ball on the floor effectively.

That makes about four or five tweets the staff has put out, most but not all by Francis, with a somewhat defensive or "circle the wagons" tone. The first appeared about the time Ulis's impending commitment to KY was reported.

Do they really think they're getting that much heat over this recruiting class? Or maybe it's Francis going a little off the reservation.

Eh, I wouldn't make much of it. I've noticed a lot of basketball recruits/scouts/coaches make vaguely philosophical nothing tweets often.

They sound like a ugly mix of strength and condition coaches, and ultra positive church signs mixed with a PG rapper.

We were at the vine yesterday for several hours and we were talking hoops and someone told me that josh "likes to smoke and eat". No idea if that's accurate but I still laughed. He was definitely carrying bad weight last year.

I used to get "inside info" from like '04-'06 during the Alford years. The only thing I've gotten the last two summers was from guys who worked the kids camp and said our players were as good of guys as you could ask for.

I think that's a pretty fair preview. A six seed sounds about right, although I hope for a four or five. Love the four-five games.

And I do think the chemistry on this team is remarkable, as the article alluded to. We will see how much it changes losing May. He was a great team leader. But I don't think it will change much. This team seems to legitimately love each other (no homo) and they could have folded last season in the midst of the close losses run they had. They didn't. They play for each other and for Fran. I love that.

Who in their right mind would want to be a dreaded five seed?

I had season tickets during The Criminal's last year and unironically believe that this makes me a better person than the people who only now started paying attention again.
Holding season tickets and sitting at games (mostly courtside due to lack of attendance) during the The Criminal Era certainly makes me feel more worthy as a human being, as well.

Between constantly burying my head in my hands and the tears it was hard to actually see the games, but goddammit, I was there. I was there trying to talk myself into Cully Payne and Brennan Cougill as the future of the program. I was there when Eric May was our best post player and the only thing that brought any sort of joy to my hopeless life. When John The Criminal made a layup and briefly made us all believe that there really were angels and that they loved us, before immediately dribbling the ball off his foot and reminding us that, no, life is shit, there is no heaven, and some day we're all going to die and rot, and if we're real fucking lucky that day will be soon. I remember when I dreamed of one day being as athletic and UT-San Antonio or as skilled as Duquesne. I served, goddammit. I was changed. When I went into that arena I was young and innocent and I left a defeated and bitter old man. What the hell do you kids even know about sacrifice?

I remember at one point Justin Johnson attempted a silly dunk from way deep and Lick pulled him aside and chewed his ass. It was the one moment of that game that was promising and Lick was not having it. That was during a loss to Louisiana Monroe in a first round game of the now defunct "Hawkeye Challege".

I remember a game thread here before we had chat that was like one other person and me posting back and forth.

I remember after all of the transfers Lick said 'These are the guys that want to be here. They are playing the style we want, and we'll be a much better team than people think.'

He thought Bwinks could play the point when he wasn't standing in the corner. Seriously, that was one of the most awkward senior nights in college basketball history. Thanks Devan, you lost a lot of games.

jesus christ I forgot that we lost the fucking hawkeye invitational, a torunament whose sole purpose was to provide Iowa with easy early season home wins

He did away with the Hawkeye Challenge two years later.

Dude lost 2 of 3 to Drake.

The storm is over now.

On the other hand I also got an Andrew Brommer bobblehead while I was at Iowa to go along with all the emotionally trauma, so in balance I probably came out ahead.

One thing they did well with the Hawkeye Challenge was bring in some very talented players from mid-major schools and lower. Daren Queenan from Lehigh (Coached by Fran), Gary Trent from Ohio, Alphonso Ford from Mississippi Valley State, etc. It seemed like every year there was a team with a relatively high-profile smaller school player.

Good god...I never knew this about Alphonso Ford:

"Despite his leukemia being in an advanced stage, Ford played the 2003-04 season with Scavolini Pesaro. Averaging 22.2 points per game, Ford, in his final season, helped Scavolini finish in fourth place in the Italian League, which meant the team qualified to the next season's Euroleague, and to the Italian Cup's runner-up position, despite being near death."

George Raveling was the first Iowa coach to lose in the Hawkeye Challenge or Invitational or whatever they called it back then. During the postgame he sounded like he felt he'd failed his country in war.

About the Lick years, what I remember most is literally being unable to give away tickets for games I couldn't make.

Those guys are a bunch of DBs. They are not and never were true fans. They were only doing it because they thought it was cool because others didn't. Now that the basketball team is cool again they are on to something else.

I walked up to the North Entrance during those year for a Big Ten game and a bunch of people were handing out free tickets.

The 2 best Hawkeye Challenge games (may have been the Super Chevy Shootout at the time) were against Detroit Mercy and Tulsa. The Detroit year also had Gonzaga in the field. That was the first year anyone heard of the Zags as they made an elite 8 run. They took 3rd in the Hawkeye Challenge but 8th nationally.

looking back, it is amazing that Iowa lost to UT-San Antonio by double digits while scoring only 50 points and kept The Criminal around for the entire season.
