A couple of national writers always give Rothstein a hard time and the joke is "300+ teams shocked to not be on Jon Rothstein's pre-season Top 25." He loves every team and every player he talks about. HUGE DIFFERENCE MAKER.

Between constantly burying my head in my hands and the tears it was hard to actually see the games, but goddammit, I was there. I was there trying to talk myself into Cully Payne and Brennan Cougill as the future of the program. I was there when Eric May was our best post player and the only thing that brought any sort of joy to my hopeless life. When John The Criminal made a layup and briefly made us all believe that there really were angels and that they loved us, before immediately dribbling the ball off his foot and reminding us that, no, life is shit, there is no heaven, and some day we're all going to die and rot, and if we're real fucking lucky that day will be soon. I remember when I dreamed of one day being as athletic and UT-San Antonio or as skilled as Duquesne. I served, goddammit. I was changed. The biggest difference was at the defensive end. Gabe made a lot of strides but clearly wasn't the same.

I also wanted to agree that your point about some of Gabe's numbers coming against second string or during blowouts is a valid one. Reminds me of some of the (2012-2013) early season discussions about Oglesby's shooting.

You should probably look at that one again, homes. He played significant minutes in a lot of close games last season, particularly toward the end of the year.

I'm not down on Woody like some folks seem to be, but I have a full on rager for what I think Gabe can be. I will not listen to any contrary opinions on this matter.

Woody was a better rebounder (12.0 OR%, 19.7 DR% to Gabe's 11.6% and 15%) and was better defensively by a good margin. Woodbury does a hell of a job of communicating on the backline and is in tune with the gameplan. With Gabe you were just hoping he knew where to be if there was any kind of switch/help and got an opportunity at a block.

Offensively Gabe was a lot more efficient because he pretty much just shot when he was within 3 feet of the rim where Woody was expected to create more. Gabe was 37-71 (52%), Woody was 81-166 (49%). At the free throw line Gabe was 25-36 (69%) while Woodbury was 26-51 (51%).

In context, Woodbury was clearly better last year. The amount of minutes they played (only 41% for Woody, 26% for Gabe) and the fact that Gabe got a lot of his in garbage time in the non-conference, skew the stats a bit.

Regardless, I'm expecting both to be better this year and get a lot more minutes. I expect Woodbury to the better player, but I'm sure there will be number of nights where Gabe is better and we want him on the floor at the end of games.

I get a feeling that the Gabe hype machine might be a little out of control at this point. The dude is athletic, but will have to had made some pretty special progress in key areas from last year if he's going to be the kind of player a lot of people here (*tips cap to BBK*) are hoping for this year.

He brings excitement in a Doug Thomas kind of way, but expectations should probably be set closer to what we saw last year but with fewer breakdowns on the defensive end. If Iowa can get that out of Gabe, it would be great... and that's about as much as I expect. Anything else is frankly a bonus.

The fact is that I called this from the start as total and complete horseshit and was proven 100% right.
