Iowa State Football Bashing Thread

I don’t understand how smaller schools can even afford having a football program anymore.

I do actually, because 75% of the shit going on isn't necessary. Group of 5 schools don't need to do any of the shit Power 5 schools are doing at this point.

They don't need extra coaches, general managers, analysts and a support staff of 100+ people. They don't need to pay the players. They don't need to pay the head coach $1m and don't need to pay the assistants $300k. They don't need crazy stadium and facility upgrades.

Central Michigan and Toledo and UMass and Arkansas State don't need any of this shit. They could just have a normal sized staff like they did 20 years ago, take their buy game money to fund the program, take the small TV deal money and play football. It's not like lower level players aren't going to take the free scholarship, room and board. What other choice do they have?

Everyone is in an arms race and half of them haven't realized that they don't have to actually participate in it. Collect the money, pay for the expenses and have a normal football team.

With all that said, the schools that are ACTUALLY fucked are the Big XII and ACC besides a select few (and those select few are still desperately trying to get out and into the Big Ten or SEC).

Big XII and ACC schools going to go broke trying to chase the Big Ten / SEC. They just can't sustain any of it with their current tv deals and revenue. They desperately need an all league salary cap, staff limits and collective bargaining. If not, then they're fucked if they don't figure out a way to compete with half the spend.

Buy game money for these programs is ~$4M/yr

Cost to operate a D1 program, even at bare bones as you’re saying has or will very soon exceed any benefit to anything.

As of Feb the Iowa AD had 228 million in debt.

the Iowa foundation aid is going up $4M...no clue what it normally looks like. Iowa is in better shape due to basically double the conference revenue distribution, which makes their relative performance to Iowa State kind of embarrassing.

neither school is going to excel in the revenue sharing era, unless we discover some hidden billionaires. Iowa's clock is more favorable than Iowa State's but will start ticking when the B10 ends equal distribution. Very few schools are really in position to start paying out $20M+ without eventually cutting.

I assume the big players understand that the NIL bag men will be their difference makers, so they didn't really care what the cap number was.

Minnesota is raising student fees to cover the $20M. The number of schools that can actually afford it is small.
