It was the 1st game. Relax.
Again, if Peyton and Joey had come in with 5 min left not a single person would be saying anything (except L. Wade).

Wake up man, he's playing his son and Joey significant minutes IN THE FIRST HALF and the 4* guys not at all. These are real games now, and nothing changed from the scrimmages or exhibition. This is what Ben is planning on doing, and he's just wrong on it. Meaning either he's insane and blinded by his kid or he completely missed on his talent evaluation of Thompson/Harris OR he isn't able to coach them up enough.

Either way, it's a really shitty development.

Harris was recruited as a 4 and they're turning him into a 2. that may take time. Thompson is buried behind a jam at 4.

Lil Lick 2.0 does not need to play much.

That is my point though, there isn't a jam at 4. He's been put behind Joey!

Not sure if Joey plays much if McKeever is healthy, but him being so far in front of Thompson is concerning

Otoh, Coon looks really good and has a big ten body right away.
I'm really excited about his tone, muscular physique. He has a well-developed lower body, with nice thick thighs, and muscular glutes. I also took notice of his nice well-developed and glistening upper body, fantastic shoulders, and pecs that really bulged out of his tight-fitting athletic gear

I don’t think Peyton would have played as much if Howard didn’t pick up 3 fouls in 5 minutes in the first half.

I should likely just stop posting in any of these basketball threads until either Peyton and Joey aren't in the rotation or until they graduate, because I'm doubtful to have anything positive to say.

I can't fucking stand the nepotism from yet another Iowa coach. This is the 3rd time in a row going through this shit. I watched enough to see Ben's son is an undersized, unathletic high volume shooter who doesn't likely shoot that well. He was also targeted immediately and often by the other team and abused on defense.

He's clearly blinded by the love for his try hard gym rat son. Good for him, what a privilege to get your dream job and have it come with a $5m salary, free education for your kids and the ability to control playing time to live vicariously through your son. Enjoy it, Ben.

McCollom has shown he will trim the rotation to 8 guys for the important games, but by all means, let's continue this scintillating discussion of minutes distributon for the end of the bench.

It's not the end of the bench though, that's the entire fucking point. His son is the 6th/7th man.

Right, he was first off the bench in the exhibition and played 18 minutes last night. This isn’t a one-off thing.

If the kid earns his way into the rotation after 3-4 years, I could live with it. He’s being handed a key role on a I am a giant douche team that lacks guards and scoring.

6-24 from three (24%) and 14-28 (50%) from the line. That's atrocious and unsustainable. This likely is a poor shooting team.

The problem is Thompson and Harris are buried on even the bench. They're the last guys off.

When McKeever is back, I think it will be:

Starters
Combs
Sage
C. Koch
Manyawu
McKeever

Primary bench
Howard
Jirak
Coleman
Coon

Deep bench
McCollom
Thompson
Matteoni
Harris
J. Koch
By the end of the year Coleman will start and Manyawu will be a 6th man. McCollom will play if Coleman and Combs can’t for whatever reason.

I could see McCollom's role end up being like this year's Hausen. A chucker who can't really shoot very well, but isn't afraid to let it fly. Gets bursts of minutes at questionable times, and then nothing for weeks.

The #1 issue last year that Iowa got their ass kicked in rebounding, so exciting to hear that we will be taking rebounding off the court and starting 3 small guards.

No issue with any of your other complaints but our defensive OR% was exceptionally good in the game (it was 18%). Our own OR% was 34% which was about average. All the caveats - it was Lipscomb but also we didn't have our 7 footer, etc etc.

No he's not. You've gone complete dumbfuck. He was the 8th guy in yesterday because Howard was in foul trouble and Lipscomb plays a ton of guards. He's the 4th guard when they don't play big. Coon has already passed him based on yesterday's performance and McKeever didn't play. All this talk about the 10th man.

Lol, you guys are blind. You think Ben McCollum is planning to play his beloved son LESS and not MORE going forward?? He's a fucking freshman. This is just the start. He's not the 10th man and won't be for the next 4 years. FOUR MORE YEARS of this, and then of course his little brother will end up here as well, so more like 7-8 more years of this.

He is fully on the Sam Hoiberg track. Will get 10+ MPG this season and be a starter in years 3 and 4. Damn it.

Cooper Koch was a poor shooter last year. Until he wasn't. Again, it's one game out of 32. You might be overreacting.

Omg wouldn't that be terrible??! Hoiberg started his 5th year, was on the all B10 defensive team, averaged 10 pts like 5 and 5 along with 2 steals, and set the team record for assist to to's on the best Nebrantska team in school history. Wouldn't want that!

We won by 20 against a shit team and the lineup and rotation isn't close to set in stone.

Doug, you throwing in the towel for the game threads already? LMK
Yep, all you my man. I'm going to try and not ruin everyone's time after this one.

the goal of a coach should be to play the most talented players, not to justify fitting their kid into an otherwise talented team. Nebrantska fans were not big on hoiberg playing and it likely cost them wins over his years in the program. Plus, his kid is way more athletic.

where this sucks is that I do like BMC and i think he could be a generational coach here. But if we miss the tourney, barely sneak in, or lose early he’s going to hear about playing his kid. And it’s not good for the long term relationship between coach, fans, and AD. We know this because we have seen it play out elsewhere.

If his name was Peyton Johnson, he'd be sitting in the student section or playing at Simpson

Your empty nester ass can pull the cart until Big 10 season kicks off. Then I got it from there.

If you go back and watch the game, you’ll notice that Coleman got beat off the dribble more than McCollum did. I’m surprised nobody is talking about the handful of times Coleman got beat on defense.

Likely because he's hyper athletic and that can be fixed over time. He's got a very high ceiling. It's not a big mystery and sort of the overall point.

We also have what appears to be a poor shooting team, and Ben sees Peyton can bring a spark off the bench as the 2nd best shooter on the team.

I'm not surprised. Some people here got their feelings hurt by Lick and Fran playing their boys, so now they are just sure the coach that just took Iowa to the elite 8 and won 4 D2 natties is making a huge error in judgment by playing his kid 18 minutes in a blowout.

Coaches far better and far more legendary made the same mistake and had a blindspot for their children. Bobby Knight and Jim Boeheim in particular. Multiple national championships and legends of coaching, both wrong and were blinded by their hubris. Tubby Smith won a national championship, made the same mistake.

Don't agree regarding being a poor shooting team at this point. Koch and Sage are great and Coleman shot 40%+ last year. They will be fine but it does sound like Thompson is the one of the best shooters so it would be nice to get him some more minutes.
