To be fair, waiting may have worked before NIL and its open market. Players want to know who they are playing for. Kirk is stubborn but I truly don’t believe he is so much so that he wouldn’t make this call early enough to help his recruitment.

Paul Chryst was seen buying a freezer at Menards in Iowa City. Weird thing to do when you just got to town, but maybe he's subleasing the old Majerus place.
surely he could afford Lowes

I'm pretty sure they have to publicly post the job before officially hiring someone.

He's helping TX with their bowl prep, supposedly.

Athletics has kinda stopped giving a fuck about that stipulation the last few years.

Army is top 10 (bottom 10?) in turnovers per game (2). Outside of the top 100 in ppg and ypg.

They were shut out twice so there's commonality.

I like the notion of being more run focused, but protecting the ball should be a significant part of that. No thanks

I think anyone offensively ranked below 100th in any category should not be allowed to be considered

Drinkall has an impressive record. I think he would be a vast improvement. Bootstraps guy.

Running a no-huddle, Power-Spread system, Drinkall’s offense set conference and school records for points per game (54.3) and yards per game (530.8) during the regular season. The 2018 offense produced a quarterback accounting for 3,739 yards and 47 touchdowns, while simultaneously producing a running back that accounted for 2,788 yards and 41 total touchdowns. Averaging over seven yards per play, the 2018 offense additionally set conference and school records for total points, total yards, points in a game (83), points in a half (69), points in a quarter (49). All three records were set in separate games.

Can IOWA just plug Cade and Bacon into a power spread offense

Kansas Weslyan and Army are about as different as they can be offensively. Looks like Dinkall runs what works with the HC philosophy and the talent on hand.

Drinkall could be appealing to Kirk as a guy he could keep under his thumb and dictate things to. Which I know will be the case with anyone, but we desperately need someone willing to tell Kirk to fuck off from time to time. The caveat there is that Kirk must respect them a lot for that to be a possibility, ergo Chryst may sadly be the best realistic option.

The Kirk as OC control freak is a strange one. Outside of GDGD, I don't think it really holds up.

Brain abandoned the outside zone, went 5 wide often, ran a little tempo early on. He wasn't being held back by Kirk.

You could probably argue Davis was saddled with a run game and formations that didn't complement his passing game.

Brian is Chris Farley in Tommy Boy, but you are right that his earlier offenses were more imaginative and were also his best. Not that he was ever good, but he became insanely dumb and conservative over time.

The hopeless draw plays on 3rd and 9, unwillingness to throw deep, jet sweeps to slow white receivers, and other frustrations we all know have been constants for awhile now.

Hopefully you’re right and Kirk is willing to give whoever gets the job enough leash to either hang themselves or actually field a respectable offense.

Is this Drinkall cat a candidate? The favorite?

underwhelming, but honestly wouldn’t be a surprise if bright successful prospects weren’t exactly beating down Kirk’s door, or he was incapable of identifying them

Iowa is a top-25 program. It should be able to pick a top assistant off from 100 other FBS programs.

And yet.

It sucks, but I’m sure it’s not lost on people that exactly 0 of Iowa’s offensive coordinators under Kirk have left the position with much better prospects or reputations than they entered it with. Arguably, KOK did, but he basically had no notable experience above DIII when he was first hired (one terrible season as Fordham’s HC in 1998).

Don’t compare the Kirk coaching tree to Hayden. That part of the Fry legacy did not continue.

I don't think it is so much that it didn't continue as Kirk has some exceptional coaches on his coaching tree, but they just had opposite philosophies about it and it was a different time. Hayden encouraged his guys to move on to bigger and better jobs. Kirk's guys have stuck around forever.

A lot of that has to do with the pay of assistant coaches during Fry's era and now. That is back when lower level staff coaches didn't make jack shit and you had to keep upgrading yourself to make a comfortable salary.

Now the lowest guy on the staff makes about $450k with bonuses. The DC is about to make $2m soon. OC might make around $1.5m depending on who they hire. Special Teams Coordinator makes $800k. When you have those sorts of salaries along with the extreme stability that Iowa offers compared to the completely volatile environment of nearly every other college program, I don't blame guys for just sticking at Iowa.

That’s fair. The coaching world has changed, and Kirk doesn’t see his job as developing coaches along with players. It isn’t wrong, but it’s also true that nobody is making Iowa assistants offers they can’t refuse.

Supposedly a few of them have been offered jobs nobody would have refused even a decade ago (Phil Parker, Seth Wallace, LeVar Woods in particular) but all of them turned them down to stay with Kirk. I think with Phil Parker he is just an introvert and loves where he is and has extreme loyalty to Kirk.

Wallace and Woods because they have young families and also have extreme loyalty to Kirk.
