He can't be the guy, because you can't simply promote from within when you are as awful as Iowa has been. But his "failure" in his one season as OC is being overstated.

The year prior to Budmayr, Colorado State averaged 323 yard per game on 4.8 ypp.

His lone season as OC, they put up 415 per game, on 5.5 ypp.

They were still bad as a team, and the head guy was canned. The new guy brought in his coaches, and they were worse on offense.

This is not to say he should be an OC candidate at a P2 school. He certainly should not be, but we've kind of turned him into Brian, and I don't know if that's fair either.

It isn’t remotely fair. Brian is uniquely bad at the job. There are charts and graphs and everything. He recruits garbage, has a stupid scheme, and can’t adjust. He’s terrible at all things a coordinator should be decent at. His offense in general was at best a verbal eye roll by announcers, his two minute offense was mocked openly by announcers (they don’t know what they’re doing, but they know they need to do it faster). Their job is to sell interest in the game.
