So either Iowa didn’t offer John’s $1.5 million or John’s wanted more than $1.5 million.
Or he wanted even less and they refused to pay him that.

Also, this is all starting to string together how we get to the point that Paul Chryst interviewed, was obviously interested in the job, then offered the job and turns it down. Anyone willing to bet against it having something to do with lowballing him?

Be interesting to see what the actual contract is for, that may answer some questions
Count me in for the under $1m club. I bet it is something like $900k. He was making $800k as head coach at Western Michigan and I seriously doubt if the Packers are paying him much more than $150k-$200k as an analyst.

That number seems way high for him to have any say in.
Right but everyone was told that they increased Phil’s salary because he obviously deserved it and to allow them to spend the equivalent to that on an OC.

If Iowa wasn’t willing to go above $1M for an OC then they need to join the Big 12. Or cut 6 sports.

Wasn’t Chrysts contract set that whatever he made after Wisconsin would offset some of his buyout?

If he’s getting paid the Wisconsin money anyway, why take a higher stress job when you can live in Austin Texas half ass coaching?

I don't disagree, but this got down the road to where all of the beat guys involved were pretty much saying Kirk was confident that it would be Chryst and to the point an actual offer was made.

You don't get to that without some heavy mutual interest. Nephew and Budmayr on the staff as well.

Whatever, fuck it. They hired a guy that Kirk already knew and likely fit within budget and was about his 5th choice. It is what it is. Hope it works out.

Cade is a cripple who will never walk/play again
His backup is morbidly obese, and happens to be the worst qb in D1, with impenetrable job security
The new OC is an unaccomplished bum that no one else wanted
The WR coach is an elder abusing 32 year old gift from god who looks like he’s 52

I see great things from Iowa’s offense in 2024

Iowas entire focus has to be on getting Lainez ready by the first game. There is no chance Cade makes it through the season.
Remember when that black QB from Oregon was going to visit and was interested but they couldn't tell him who the OC would be so he said fuck it and went somewhere else?

Good times.

Deacon should seriously consider retiring. He has his whole life in front of him and the risk of cardiac arrest is too great.

It's going to be incredible when Bacon Hill emerges from Spring Ball as the unquestioned starter if Cade isn't available.

Kirk was in desperate need of upgrading his car. It was a seller’s market, but he had budget to drive away with a moderately high end vehicle. However he insisted on slow playing and low balling and now we’re heading home in a fucking Ford Escape.

It’s all so dumb. They could have looked at this hire as a potential bridge to the HC in a few years. Swing big and if you connect, you don’t have to worry about continuity and going through a huge coaching search. There’s no way Lester is going to get the HC position and anyone they do hire to replace Kirk will bring in their own OC. This was the perfect time to spend big on an assistant coach. Iowa continues to shoot themselves in the dick by thinking small and bureaucratic dumbfuckery. Every other competitive school overpays and acts with a sense of urgency.

Lester could end up being a continuation of the KF offensive disaster, but a few things to keep in mind:

1. The on field results for the Hawkeye football team is the only thing that matters. The OC's job history, the hiring process, etc. will be irrelevant.

2. You can't be in the Beth Fan Club and hate this hire/blame it on KF. Beth was a part of the process, which she said was going very well.

3. Chryst was fired from his last job and hasn't landed/taken a real coaching job in 18 months and counting. Johns was basically fired by Elko when he wasn't invited to join him at A&M. I'm not sure it's realistic that Iowa, broken offense or not, and most P2 schools are going to have OC candidates/pools free from legit question marks.

I'd like to see a guy who can move around, run when necessary, throw on the run and throw into windows with a quick release.

Most simple explanation isn't budgets or timing or any of that. Kirk doesn't think his system is broken, he thinks it's injuries or execution that cause it to fail. He was going to bring Brian back until Beth fired him. He found the most familiar guy with the right experience that will work within his parameters. Status quo.

Garta's "I don't ever want to hire another coach" philosophy set this in stone. Kirk is too expensive to fire and nobody else is paying that buyout. He feels no pressure. We're going to have to live with this until he decides he's had enough.

Fuck Kirk. I’m so over this shit. Single worst QB in the country and “that’s our starter! Played some good ball for us!”

What a stupid asshole he has become

I voted no on the official pole, but am in the disappointed but not unhopeful camp. The timing and process were the worst parts of this. And I think he’s better than the gift.

Kirk can’t take a haircut to get the best possible OC? He’s made close to a 100 million as HC already

It's true that injuries didn't help last year. Let's say they have an all American QB last year and healthy TEs. Id argue they wouldn't finish dead fucking last and would be more like bottom 10-20 range.

Outside of making money available it’s the HC’s job to hire his staff. Sounds like Beth did her job. I don’t see how she deserves any blame in this.

I have it on good authority that he didn't come because he wanted to be guaranteed a starting spot, not because we didn't have an OC.

Beth fired the underperforming fat nepo baby that was reporting directly to her, giving her head coach more time than any in the country to be thinking about his replacement. Zero of this is on her. Gary's legacy is going to take some time to unwind.

The mental gymnastics being played to give Beth credit for all things good and excuse her from all things bad is becoming comical.

She was absolutely a part of the OC hiring process and is on record saying it was going well. And like it or not, it is her job to successfully influence her direct reports in ways that will achieve the best outcome.

100% false. She probably had one thing to influence: “Hey Kirk, you can’t hire a family member.”

If you are micromanaging your HC’s hires, you have the wrong HC. (Which is a totally different discussion.)

Hire the right people for the job, then let them do their job.

She can't say "The process is sucking because Kirk is clueless and dragging his feet."

Of course she was going to say it was going well publicly.

It also gave Brian ample opportunity to find a new job. What's he up to these days?

She was also on record right after she kicked Brian to the curb that she leaves the hiring of assistants up to the head coaches.

And from a PR perspective, of course she is going to say the hiring process was going well. It was from her perspective. Now it's up to Kirk and Tim to put on their big boy pants and actually roll out an offense.
