100% false. She probably had one thing to influence: “Hey Kirk, you can’t hire a family member.”

If you are micromanaging your HC’s hires, you have the wrong HC. (Which is a totally different discussion.)

Hire the right people for the job, then let them do their job.
She was also on record right after she kicked Brian to the curb that she leaves the hiring of assistants up to the head coaches.

And from a PR perspective, of course she is going to say the hiring process was going well. It was from her perspective. Now it's up to Kirk and Tim to put on their big boy pants and actually roll out an offense.
Go back and listen to her comments at the time. She said it was Kirk's hire, but there was some vague comment attached to that statement that indicated she/others would be involved.

Any of the Bethies here going to be bold enough to say Beth didn't meet/talk to Lester prior to the hire? Or that she didn't have veto power after that meeting/discussion?

"Actually, it's not going very well...it's not going very well at all."
There is a middle ground between it's going well and it's not going well that is well known by politicians, executives, managers, etc. She opted to not use that middle ground.

Kirk was in desperate need of upgrading his car. It was a seller’s market, but he had budget to drive away with a moderately high end vehicle. However he insisted on slow playing and low balling and now we’re heading home in a fucking Ford Escape.
It's like your life story.

Who knows? Do you? I sure as hell don’t.

And if she was going to veto, what would it be based on?

I don't know for sure, but I think it would be very weird for a department head to not meet/talk to a key hire two levels below, particularly when that position has been a problem area for the most important part of the department.

As for veto, it could be anything from resume to interview, etc. And no good manager is going to call it a veto....more of a "I'm a little concerned about X, do we have any other options that are stronger in this area"?

I don’t think Lester is a particularly good hire, but I also don’t think an AD should veto hires that are otherwise qualified and have no conflict of interest issues.
Lester is a qualified hire who had some of the nation's best college offenses while he was at Western Michigan.

It would be asinine for Beth Goetz to veto it. In fact, Beth should be fired on the spot if she did.

We're making some progress....Lester is now qualified. Which you wouldn't know by reading much of the hyperbole above.

Someone on Kakert's board said the entire staff preferred Lester over the Duke OC. That's somewhat interesting if true.

Most simple explanation isn't budgets or timing or any of that. Kirk doesn't think his system is broken, he thinks it's injuries or execution that cause it to fail. He was going to bring Brian back until Beth fired him. He found the most familiar guy with the right experience that will work within his parameters. Status quo.

Garta's "I don't ever want to hire another coach" philosophy set this in stone. Kirk is too expensive to fire and nobody else is paying that buyout. He feels no pressure. We're going to have to live with this until he decides he's had enough.
Is there anything backing this up except message board nonsense?

Someone on this board said that the players were as pissed about the OC hire as the message board fans.

Not true.

His press conference after the firing. Went straight to talking about injuries, etc. Not an ironclad statement of intent but sure didn't sound like he thought it was justified.

There's something about the looks of Johns that is very off putting.

Just looks like a weirdo.

If I randomly met him, I would go into it assuming I'm gonna hate this fucking guy.

Here’s an extended highlight of their 2021 upset at Pitt where they scored 44. That was the year Pitt had Pickett and won 11 games. About 80% of the highlights are RPO’s, everything out of gun.:

You all are going to be so pissed the first time it's 3rd and inches if he lines up in the shotgun and runs a RPO for -2 yards.

Outside of making money available it’s the HC’s job to hire his staff. Sounds like Beth did her job. I don’t see how she deserves any blame in this.
not really. It is sort of stupid to say the head coach is in charge of hiring his staff, but not firing his staff.

It's also stupid to not recognize whey SHE fired Brian.
