Hopefully on Tuesday some reporter asks it more directly. The question isn't "are turnovers good?" The question is, "will you allow an OC to run primarily out of the shotgun?"

Right. Somehow we’re all supposed to just accept at face value that offenses that aren’t bad turn the ball over?

It’s perfectly reasonable for a coach to have a philosophy about whether he wants to hurry up or slow down the clock. I want someone to ask Kirk if things like the ridiculously short average depth of target on pass attempts, or specific run blocking schemes are something he’s intentionally doing.

It's hard to imagine Kirk making that comment with a straight face when his son's offense the past 3 seasons was the exact opposite of every word. And if not for BDB, he was going to run it all out there again next season.

It's fine if you don't want to turn the ball over. But it's a problem if your fear of a turnover is so much that you don't want to try and score.
Even Woody Hayes in his "three yards and a cloud of dust" days threw the ball, and it was more than five yards downfield.

Average percentile ranking on offense in the eleven years Iowa had a .750 or better winning percentage: 29.90%.

Average percentile ranking on offense in the thirteen years they didn't reach .750: 28.57%.

There are a couple of conclusions you could draw here. The first one would be that offense doesn't matter all that much, that it's only a very thin margin which separates a "good" offense from a "bad" offense, and what really matters is that one and a half percentile difference between 0-8 wins and 9+ wins.

The other conclusion you could draw here is JESUS FUCK IF IOWA HAD AN OFFENSE BETTER THAN THE *BOTTOM FUCKING THIRD* OF OFFENSES NATIONWIDE THEY WOULD BE A GODDAMN JUGGERNAUT.

At this point it's pretty obvious what conclusion KF draws. Would that he could squint hard enough to see the other one.

A QB that might go off script and improvise a positive play when the original read isn't there.....oh, the horror!

I wonder if there's anything we could learn from those outliers (2002, 2005, 2006)?

Hint: It isn't turnovers
That 2006 season was incredibly disappointing. Started 4-0, and faced #1 Ohio State with GameDay in Iowa City only to get blown out. Destroyed Purdue the next week to go 5-1, then lose 5 of their next 6 games, including to a poor Indiana team, a horrible Northwestern team, and a mediocre Minnesota team to finish 6-6. Should have defeated Texas in the bowl game, but blew a lead to finish 6-7 for the season.

/FWIW, peace.

This right here. He gave a coach speak answer as you would expect. So hit him with specifics and see if he can back pedal out or give any insight into what he actually thinks. I don’t expect he will answer any differently but at least put some pressure on the guy. It’s time he feels some I think.

Also the coach speak answer was expected but the shit about an offense being mindful of their D was dumb. Move the ball, sustain drives and score fucking points. That’s what an offense can do to help a defense. That’s it. That’s the list.

An illegal formation penalty negated a TD that would have put Iowa up 21-3. Drew Tate running towards the end zone on the catch with horns down was awesome.

I thought Andy Brodell was going to be an NFL receiver after that game.

Kirk needs to be pinned down on his flexibility with the X's & O's of the offense. The Iowa sports media hasn't dug much further than points and yards, probably because most of them don't know the X's & O's and are afraid Kirk will expose that.

How do you propose that they "pin him down" on that issue?

Right. This was my question - there's a huge difference between a head coach having a philosophy on things like pace of play and a coach dictating blocking schemes and route trees to a coordinator, and all of the conversation on this has treated it all as one thing.

Listening to Lester vs Kirk is strange. Kirk, for better or worse, just doesn't talk about scheme with reporters- even if asked directly. Lester is a little more open to that, but also a little more buzz wordy.

Seth Wallace was a lot higher on the weirdo scale than I was prepared for.
