Copeland had to go because he pretty clearly didn’t believe in how Iowa runs things (he’s not wrong). But replacing him with a guy who had no WR playing or coaching background is just a decision made by someone not seriously trying to do everything possible to win. Ultimately, that is KFs downfall. We are all more than ok with 9 and 10 win seasons. But you have to act like you’re doing everything possible to get to the next level.

I would have preferred someone else just because of the Brian stench, but there is also a realistic scenario where this works. It's fairly common for QB coaches to have bounced back and forth between WR and QB at different points in their career.

Lester has WR coach experience and it will be on him to mentor Bud and make sure that both the QBs and WRs are ready to play when the season rolls around.

i honestly don't understand this other than kirk likes guys he likes, such as:

his son
pudmayer
lester
guys who used to play for him

literally can't think of one positive attribute pudmayer brings to the table other than kirk likes him?

No need to be analytical, Bob.

I wonder who Pharty believes Joe Philbin would have selected for WR coach.

I would be surprised to hear this was Lester's decision so soon into his tenure. The other option is Kirk made this call and that means he's not letting Lester hire his own staff, which doesn't really bode well for the immediate future.

Only four different wide receivers caught a pass last year. They combined for 76 receptions, 754 yards and 3 touchdowns. I'd like to think that Budmayr could wander around the practice fields looking for four leaf clovers for the next six months and still improve those numbers, but we'll see.
Is it bad that that 76 number seems about 20 higher than I thought it would be?

Kirk was going to find a spot for Bud regardless. I'm sure it was discussed during Lester's interview.

1) it’s Iowa‘s worst position group
2) he has no experience coaching it
3) the position he has coached at Iowa has been very bad

Why wouldn’t people have hesitation?
Am I misremembering, or has pretty much every person Kirk has fallen madly in love with sort of sucked at their job

I think he's been madly in love with Norm Parker, Phil Parker, Seth Wallace, and others, so it isn't every coach.

Pudmayer watches the “n-er” vs “n-ah” video and nods in agreement.

To add to this, the head coach of a top 20 football program thought the best guy to hire to improve his worst position group was a guy that randomly walked into his office to volunteer two years ago.

The biggest benefit to being in the big ten right now is dollars. We should have the ability to find qualified assistants and pay them more than they can make at big 12 or ACC or group of five schools. It’s crazy he settled here.

I’m going on record as predicting Budmayr to be worse than Chris white.
I don’t think it’s even going to be close.

Is it too early to start calling him Buttplugmyr?

This is fundamentally my issue with the Lester hire. I think he’s fine, and will be ok. But there is no way you can convince me he was the BEST candidate

Yep, I’m basically at the same spot. Lester may turn out fine. He might even be good. But the fact it came down to two guys without jobs was telling.

Kirk has hired four OCs and none of them were Coordinators the year before they got hired. It’s just a strange way to evaluate. You’d think a guy previously being good at the role would be important.

He also evaluated Deacon as worthy of scholarship at Iowa. There have to be at least five quarterbacks at various levels playing football in the state of Iowa that are better than Deacon Hill.

There are at least 5 posters on Halo that likely think they are better than Deacon Hill.

There almost has to be at least one that truly is, though.
