It would be tedious to go back and try to identify the relevant situations, but I also think our guys shot a relatively poor percentage down the stretch in close games. I'm surprised that Marble shot 71% this year, because I remember him going 1-for-2 or missing the front end a number of times in big games, particularly in the four big losses we suffered at home. Mike also had a hard time at crunch time, as in the ISU game and the MSU game at home.

Of course, it's the misses you recall more than the makes, but I wouldn't be surprised if the stats for misses in close games were worse than the overall season numbers.

gesells fg % fell from 40% to 37.5 this yr

3P% stayed the same basically despite taking a slightly fewer amount. 33-104 (.317) to 29-92 (.315).
2P% dropped. 73-159 (.459) to 61-148 (.412).
FT% also dropped. 50-63 (.794) to 49-73 (.671)

Just for fun..

Horner as a soph: FG%- 44.0 2P%- 46.7, 3P%- 42.5, FT%- 86.0, PPG- 13.0, APG- 4.2

Oliver as a soph: FG%- 40.1, 2P%- 42.1, 3P%- 36.7, FT%- 71.6, PPG- 11.9, APG- 4.5

Horner's shooting numbers slipped across the board the next two years, tho the assists moved to >5. O slipped slightly from the field, but upped the FT #.

More importantly, he did it with more minutes.

Oliver has more points and assists per minute than Horner (they are very similar when you break it down per minute), but Horner was a good rebounder for a guard. Oliver was the better defender, and didn't need another primary ball handler to play alongside of him.

And, just because NLP seems to be one of those 'he's a winner,' 'large testicles,' types, Oliver was part of Iowa's last Sweet 16 team, and won two State Titles. Personally, I think a lot of the winning in high school had to do with Oliver playing on much better teams, and I'm not sure what to attribute Iowa's loss to Northwestern State to. Unfortunately CBS cut away both times Iowa built a large lead.

Horner was a better shooter, but Oliver was much better on defense and taking it to the hoop.

Good read...I think the team definitely wore down by the end of the season.

I think once the ball got into his hands, his teammates stopped moving around to get open and pretty much let him do on his own

I listened to the CRG podcast last night and they threw out every theory discussed here as to the cause of the late season meltdown, and didn't really dismiss any of them completely. They did seem to think the timing of the IU postponement was significant for a variety of reasons.

When they got around to discussing the topic of team chemistry/locker room issues in response to a question send by a fan, they were very circumspect and said they didn't want to got into it much but they thought more on that is likely to come out over time. The implication was that they're aware of some things but didn't want to get into it, at least not for now.

Neither Doc nor Morehouse seemed very optimistic about next season (except for football), althought they thought 10-8 in conference sounded about right.

I agree fro. If white can play more inside, uthoff/jok gets more minutes and tries to score more and one of the point guards decides to nut up, I think we will be just fine next season.

I'm still holding out hope that Uthoff physically matures and by the time he's a SR, he's somewhat serviceable inside as well as outside.

Not sure what to think about White after this season. Can he bulk up and not lose his game? I don't like seeing him out at the 3, especially with the graduation loss of Basabe. We're not an exceptionally quick team, so that height/length was the advantage they leaned on.

I also thought that was an odd contrast to the rest of their comments. It seems like the Gazette guys other than Hlas are basically fans who get to follow the team for a living, and that includes some of the ups and downs that fans go through. The one-word description of the basketball portion of their podcast would be "blah," which is a good description of the mood of Iowa basketball fans generally right now.

While I think Trey overstates his influence, Brad Winston (JUCO guy for Rivals) mentioned awhile back that for whatever reason, a lot of JUCOs never make it beyond their first visit. Could be good news this weekend.

Got a buddy that's the same way..JUCO all American bball player..about 6-5 185lbs back then, he's about 6-5 260lbs now..Lifts 4 days a week, probably spends $10k a year on protein jugs etc
