Oh nothing spectacular. BIL came the day before and she didn't want to. No real reason for that, at least to my memory. I think it was that she couldn't get away from work, but she worked remotely so...

Anyway once he left they said it would be too much money in gas for her to come in the second car. If you're good at putting 2 and 2 together this is the morning before our wedding. Wife's aunt and uncle who also live in the Chicago suburbs offered to pick her up Saturday morning but she "couldn't inconvenience them like that." So my in-laws offered to pay for a flight from Chicago to Des Moines (and then later offered a cab, too), but again, she thought it wouldn't be right for her to accept money like that. At that point everyone just gave up. She obviously just didn't want to come which was perfectly fine with me, and my wife, too, once she thought about it.

My wife's other brother and his wife are great. So are her parents. I figure batting 0.6667 isn't so bad.
She was fucking another dude that weekend.

Kluver and Kulick both said Braithwaite would do a good job but not sure he’s the best guy to lead the program. Felt he was better in the secondary role. They’re not sure he’s rah rah enough. They did say the majority of the workouts the players did were actually his workouts.

They both really like Joel Welsh from Cental Michigan or Chris DiMarco from Elon who were both in the program previously. DiMarco is apparently very cutting edge, doesn’t have his players do any back squats and is going to work on his doctorate in strength and conditioning.

They threw out Grant Steens name as he’s an assistant S&C coach with the Seahawks though NFL programs are much different. Also threw out Alex Kanellis name but if anyone has followed his move from Regina, he’s doing some really weird S&C shit in San Diego that I’m not sure a coach at a Big Ten school would sign up for (Weck Method).

I just hope they don’t do what Barta did after Alford where they try to hire the exact opposite personality that is too soft on the players.

I'd be shocked if the next SC is a honkie.

Think the black players would take that as an insult

It was an informative episode. Seems like Iowa has some pretty good options. The players apparently really liked and respected Welsh and DiMarco- not as friends but as people and guys who can really motivate and know their shit.

Don’t know much about Kanellis other than wasn’t he set to take the wrestling S&C job but decided to return to Regina? I can tell you his dad is salt of the earth. Just a great human being. If Alex is anything like him I’m sure he’d be a great hire as well.

I still have dental trauma till this day because of him. He had to have my mom and a dental assistant hold me down as he cut under my tongue twice when I was a kid because I couldn't stick my tongue out all the way. It would only go a fraction out of my mouth so at the time the procedure was to take some sort of clippers and clip the tissue under my tongue.

Mostly remember screaming because he did it with no numbing or much warning. He would put gauze on it and give me a sucker and send me on my way. Hate the dentist till this day.

From the few times I have met Alex, he came off as one of the biggest douches I know. He used to date one of my wife’s friends.

I still can't stick my tongue out very far and if I do it for long it hurts and get a cramp.

Has always been a ready made excuse to get out of eating you know what. Blessing and a curse.

You had a tongue tie. One of my kids had that. It was messing up his latch for breast feeding. Dentist used a laser on it when he was a week old. All good.

I knew a guy in college who couldn’t stick his tongue out. He died in 2011.

Damn man. Sorry to hear that. I think dentistry has come a long ways in identifying why so many people hate coming due to their experiences as children. Most of us put a huge emphasis on creating an enjoyable experience for kids, even if work has to get done. Lasers have made tongue ties a much less traumatic experience.

But you know what they say...those who can’t do, teach.

That’s usually caught in the nursery. Pretty easy procedure called a frenulectomy but I can’t imagine having that done as an older child.

Yeah, had some terrible dental experiences. The one I told the last few posts and another pretty terrible one.

The dentist that was my Dad's dentist when he was a kid was my dentist right after Dr. Kanellis. Old school fucking terror. Had a bad cavity and his method was no or minimal novocaine. When my Dad was a kid he did multiple fillings without it.

Anyways, he starts on my back molar and goes with zero novocaine. I freak out. He tries with minimal. Hurts like a mother fucker. I get out of the chair and leave.

2 months later I went and had it pulled under full sedation.

The dentist down here is wonderful. Comfortable environment, full conscious sedation or nitrous (my choice as you can relax and leave right away), tv's, noise cancelling headphones. It is like a spa.

With cold steel too. Lol. Fuck that... on a thrashing kid.

pediatric dentistry has been completely overhauled in the last 25 years. Gone are the days of papoose boards and “hand-over-mouth” (which we’re still being taught when i was trained).

If I have a kid that I have any Spidey-sense that there will be the slightest behavioral issue I’m sending them off immediately to pediatric.... I don’t have the patience for it anymore and I readily admit it to their parents that they will have a better experience elsewhere. Getting old and grumpy and don’t want to put on the pediatric dog-n-pony show.

Would you give doug plenty of extra special attention in your dental spa?

I don’t even have nitrous plumbed at my office. But I’ll use truckloads of “Novocain” upon request. Good local anesthesia is probably one of the most important aspects of being a successful dentite.

Unfortunately there is pretty wide variation in anatomy and physiology in dental patients. Makes it difficult to be certain your have profound anesthesia before that drill bit gets through the enamel.

Nope. I don’t mess with sedation anymore. I’m a simple nuts-n-bolts dentist at this point in my career. But early on I used to use quite a bit of oral sedation, but mostly just triazolam (0.5mg one hour prior) and nitrous.

I’ve had patients ask for whiskey prior to procedures. Apparently the guy before the guy who I took over for used to keep whiskey and a shot glass in the operatory and offer it to patients prior to procedures. Non-traditional numbing before local anesthetic in dentistry really took off. I’ve been told sometimes he’d take a shot with them lol. Hell of a brand if you ask me.

I think it depends on when you met him. I absolutely loathed him in college - a complete meathead who did whatever he wanted, including bouncing a tennis players head off a pillar for no reason at a party (you might remember him missing a bowl game.)

Post college he’s a pretty enjoyable guy to be around (in my experience.)

Went to high school with Alex, he's a good guy. His first couple years at Iowa were not great, he became really good friends with Pat Angerer and if most recall Pat didn't have a great start to his career either. Pat grew up within the program, unfortunately Alex had the concussion issues and had to call it a career.

But like I said, his method of training just isn't something a Big Ten program is going to sign up for at this time. It's absurdly unique.

The fact they threw his name out is absurd. A couple years ago he was a S&C coach for a 1a/2a school, but now he would be a candidate for a big ten football job? JFC
They said they don’t really know him, just know he’s an Iowa guy who is in strength and conditioning. And he was hired by the wrestling program a couple years ago. So while I don’t think it’s going to happen it also isn’t absurd to bring it up.

Yes it is absurd. The difference between the Iowa wrestling s&c job and the head Iowa football s&c job is a damn ocean.

It also appears everyone is in full pandemic freak out with positive tests on players coming up.

Unless people truly realize that nearly every single player is going to get this regardless, life is never going to go on.
If the esteemed Dr. Fauci has his way, there won't be any college or pro football this year.
