My football playing roommate at Iowa had a brand new Mustang in 1998. He was black and from Indianapolis. His parents weren't rich and pretty sure he was getting a Pell Grant, but given he had zero expenses and knew he would be moving into Pheasant Ridge the following year they got him a new car. The $350 payment or whatever was easily covered.

The Iowa coaches know everything about these kids and their background. They have to if they have a prayer of remaining in compliance with the NCAA and avoiding boosters or others taking advantage of the players. Yeah, most white players likely are from a better financial background and won't get questioned as much. When Marcel Joly who as he self describes is from the "ghetto" or Jaleel Johnson show up with new cars they are going to be questioned harder than if CJ Fedoriowaiteczelaglh shows up with a brand new truck. That isn't racism, that is reality. It isn't seeing a random black guy driving a Range Rover and wondering how he got it. That is racism.
