The “root cause” answer is really, really damning. If you don’t know, as the accountable leader, the root cause(s) of a complete meltdown, then you haven’t accompanied the first essential task toward identifying solutions. You’re just running your ass out there and hoping for a miracle.
It's also clear by the rest of the presser that he has no clue what to do. He keeps saying the answer is to get back to basics. WTF does that even mean?

His answer on what they’re doing wrong was all about results and not about what they’re doing.

“We’re turning the ball over, we’re not gaining enough yards on first down, etc.”

That isn’t *what* you’re doing wrong. It’s the consequences of what you’re doing wrong.

In the end he said the dreaded E word.

It's just execution folks. If everyone manages to execute their job with absolute perfection and the offensive timing is in harmony with the football gods we may be able to run that outside zone play for 5 yards.

It's your scheme dude. The shittiest of programs can luck themselves into a couple of TD's a game. Simplify your shit and take some pressure off the players to be perfect.

He tells on himself with the answer about some guys being on the field who haven’t gotten to that level yet.

This is a developmental program. The entire Ferentz value proposition is that you take overlooked kids and develop them. The defense is doing the best job of that in America.

It isn’t happening on the offensive side. There are two possible “root causes.” Either they’re failing to identify recruits who fit that mold, or they’re getting the right kids but, as coaches, are unable to develop them.

Either way, we know the “root cause,” and it has a stupid haircut.

It’s just embarrassing and devastating.

All the positives that were going on. The uptick in recruiting over the last few years. the win/loss floor was raising. The annually really good defenses becoming annually great defenses.

Imagine being willing to blow all that up over loyalty to a dipshit nerd like Spencer Fucking Petras. We know the line is young and skill guys are hurt, blah blah blah. Changing QBs would help all of that.

Charlie Jones transferring after spring makes sense now because he probably found out Peaches was going to be his QB again. It should have been a red flag that a fan favorite player would leave at that point.

Brian is a terrible coordinator and needs to be gone but his shitty offense looked and functioned a lot better with even a mediocre QB like Stanley.

Kirk is augering the program he built into the ground because of his emotional attachment to a generationally bad player.

I really hope he can pull out of this. He’s done it before but I have my doubts now that he’s scratching the bottom of 70.

The only execution I want at this point, is Brian’s.

The very first question and sentence in response was absolutely fucking stunning. I couldn’t go on.

Q. I could recite the stats and the rankings, but you probably already know them, and it doesn't really matter anyway. Is there a clear source of where the offensive issues start? Is it positional? Is it schematic? Is it you? Is it the play-calling? Is it your father? Is there one area you think you're looking at saying this is where the root of all this is?

Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz: I think, unfortunately, we don't have a root cause.

"That's exactly what someone would say if they were the root cause."

LOFL at all of this. And LOFL at him referring to his daddy when answering. My dad's got good will...people love him...he'll save me.

"If I'm not mistaken, you report to Gary Barta."

No, motherfucker. No.

I imagine they were shocked and couldn’t believe what they heard. Best part is BF to daddy after he left the podium.
“Did you hear that, daddy?!? I totally pwned him didn’t I?!! Did you see?!? Did you see me pwn him?!?”

At this point, I actually think it’s too charitable to Kirk to say that he’s emotionally attached to Spencer. I think it’s far more likely that due to the volume of people saying that he’s wrong, he is unable to make the change because it would be validating that criticism.

Pathetic. Do your fucking job. Don’t have to be a prick about it, but stop letting these utter morons control the narrative.

Brian and Kirk both appear to be legitimately stupid.

My god it is infuriating to watch failure on so many levels and an inability - or flat out refusal - to adapt or change. Digging in and choosing to ignore reality out of obstinance…..smh.

That was embarrassing. Fire them all.

The three previous times when the fanbase called him a dumbfuck (and was subsequently proven correct) must have gotten to him.

Somebody failed, in not asking him about that screen pass to LaPorta.

"Brian, when you schemed up that play, did you purposefully design it so that after a few-steps dropback by Petras the pass's designated location was actually so far off the line of scrimmage that LaPorta would very nearly be catching a backward pass?"

This has been said ad nauseum but without wholesale changes to the offense and offensive coaches, and with NIL, that side of the ball is deceased, kaput. Absolutely nobody with any talent will want to come to Iowa, get paid basically nothing and see their production severely suppressed by an outdated scheme, possibly sit behind less talented individuals, get shit on in the press by coaches (Hogan), etc. Its beyond a toxic situation. It’s a uninhabitable offense for talented players.

How are you going to get better, Brian?

We’re going to get better, by being better.

As much as 4-8 would suck hard this year….it’s absolutely nothing to how quickly this could snowball. In the immediate transfer era….good football teams have the ability to implode with a totally new speed

With Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz on staff, you can’t sell results and you can’t sell hope. That is not great.

I’ll just say it. I’d absolutely take Lane Kiffin as head coach. After his time in Alabama I think he’s finally the real deal. Especially now that scumbaggery isn’t against the rules anymore

- Transfers (out).
- Recruits (esp. WRs) not wanting to play for a DFL offense and a stone-age system/scheme. Not to mention opposing coaches using it against Iowa on the recruiting trail.
- KF/BF sticking with what & who isn't working because they know better than 'random stupid fans'. Can't risk admitting they were wrong.
- Wash, rinse, repeat.

The issue is not the play design, the issue is that we have run the play successfully and defenses are always aware of it now. It went for a TD against Kentucky, LaPorta broke a tackle 5 yards deep earlier this year and went for a nice gain, and now this time the defender made the tackle.

When you repeatedly run that play to your only receiving threat, defenses are not going to keep being be fooled.

I skipped over most of this thread, but did anyone respond "Gee, the upside is you might not be the worst offense in the entire country??"

Anyways, I was never on the get rid of Kirk train, but after hearing Brian speak they all need to get walked out the door.
Play stupid games (Brian), win stupid prizes.
