Wisconsin AD freaked out and did what so many stupid HawkeyeHeaven, IowaFan, L. Wade, Shawnee morons have wanted to do from time to time with Kirk, and that is "totally change it up and go after it".

Chryst had become a bore and was going through a slightly mediocre stretch and started 2-3 that season. In their defense, he wasn't adjusting to the new era in recruiting, but they could have forced him to. Instead, not in their defense, they fired a guy that had this record at Wisconsin...

Pure fucking stupidity. Even dumber than when Nebrantska fired Bo Pelini while listening to their idiot fans.

Now look at where both programs are and have been. I hope Iowa never makes this idiotic mistake.
It's amazing to realize that when Wisconsin fired Chryst, he was coming off a 9-4 season. I realize it was the West but still that was likely a top 30 team that year. Next year, they start slow and he's gone.

The play worked out great and taking the safest option the easiest throw, but man Oertwerth was WIDE fucking open.

Is that open enough for ortwerth? One of those safety's could easily beat him to it
He was streaking away there, ended up even more open and none of them had a chance at a well thrown ball. Here he is about a second later.

The main reason is Diaz is the first read and was covered, so he went with what was in his eyeline after that and Williams was so wide open that he had to take it there. He never saw Oertwerth.

Zach Oertwerth (sp?) is likely wide open for a reason, like Patrick McCaffery.
He's had multiple big catches down the field in his career. A huge one against Wisconsin early as a Freshman, had a massive one against Oregon last year. He can be effective if you throw to him.

The problem with Hank is that he has a cannon arm without downfield accuracy, he's missed that throw too many times this year.

He should have thrown it, but probably 50/50 whether he can hit that, even wide open.

“On every play there are some guys who are never going to be looked at, no matter how wide open they are.” <—— shit I have to explain to my wife

Doug's follow up was right - you can typically find guys who are open on most plays, but if Brown was looking over at Diaz and sees the underneath route THAT open, he's not going to wait to survey the rest of the field to see if anyone else might be more open.

I was yelling in the stands as he opened up. But my guess is that he never once considered going elsewhere. Plus after watching the replay he wanted to get rid of it quickly with how long the ball had been in the backfield.

It is interesting to look at, 4 Wisconsin defenders turning their back on the ball and chasing one TE running down the middle of the field.

That could be a fun conversation in film review. Wonder what the two around the 30 yard line had as reads.
