Parker is a good candidate. Why pass that up and lose him for your 4th or 5th choice from the outside?

People are seriously underestimating how big of a this change is. This is a total revamp.

Why pass up Parker? Uh, because he was acting DC last year when Norm was out and I didn't see any defensive improvment. If you're going to change coordinators, doesn't it make sense to expect improvement?

And it's more of a shuffle, than a revamp.

Now, bring on the, "fuck you noob".

One Parker learns football from the other Parker. The "noob" calls it a shuffle instead of a revamp. You call him an idiot. I can only think of that old saying, about keeping your mouth shut so people cant prove you're an a-hole.

yes, I would fully expect to some who is sharing the duties on short notice using someone else's scheme with SHANE FUCKING DIBONA at linebacker to look fantastic!

I believe the word was, "improvement" but, fantastic would have been nice too. And if you think the scheme is going to change, think again.

The 2010 defense was the 7th best scoring defense in the nation. I'll take that.

This thread is full of a bunch of fucking retarded comments. I'm not talking about the retards that win gold medals at the Special Olympics. I'm talking about the retards that come in last in every fucking event.

JFC.

1). The defense ranked 7th in the nation in that year. 7th in the fucking nation.

2). "If you're going to change coordinators, doesn't it make sense to expect improvement"? We didn't fire Norm, dumbass. We don't need improvement from what we've had. Our defenses have been awesome.

3). He wasn't even the only guy in charge. It was a "collaboration" between he, Wilson and Kaczenski you buffoon. It's not like he got to run his defense or install new shit.

So to sum it up, you're pissed about the choice because the defense didn't improve from their elite status, while they were coaching shorthanded and had a bunch of guys trying to come together with the plan on short notice in the middle of the year.

Now you can GFY

The most alarming thing I'm seeing is the apathy that's creeping into the average Iowa football fan. Aside from a few fanatics on message boards, most Iowa fans I'm talking to aren't really all that interested in what the coaching changes are. The overwhelming sentiment is that it's still going to be the same ole same ole KF ultra-conservative, punt on 4th in the other team's territory, kneel on the ball if there is less than 5 mins left in the 2nd quarter and play to run out the clock from the opening kickoff.

Changing OC and DC in the same season could have been a great opportunity to pump up the fan base and reinvigorate the program, but under Ferentz it's been more like filling out and releasing tax returns.

I think Parker will go a good job, I was just hoping for a little different style of play which is why I wanted someone else.

The players love Parker so if he is given the freedom to not call games 100% like Norm did, I think it will be fine.

Kirk could have done much much worse. Mike Stoops was the guy I wanted but any of the candidates mentioned after that seemed pretty similar to me.

That could not ever make a stop when needed.
Not ever? Really? How about against Missouri in the Bowl game? Or against Wisconsin only to have the Punt team fuck it up. Or against Northwestern and Ohio St all game long while the offense did next to nothing.

I would argue that said 'apathy' is creeping in because we've lost a bunch of football games these last two years.

We did all of the above several times during the recent Orange bowl campaign & fans were nowhere near apathetic. (In fact, the game against Georgia Tech should have been a 30-pt game...but win, and no one pays much attention to the stupid decisions you make.)

Just win, baby is really all that matters. If you're playing winning football, I promise you no one is going to care how you're going about it...However, the fan bases' patience is wearing thin (and well it should)...but it has very little to do with conservative football, imo...

Well aren't we testy this morning. Of course I have paid attention to KF coached teams for the last 13 years. Perhaps you should look up the definition of the word hope instead of being a fuckstick. I was hoping Kirk would take all these vacancies as an opportunity for a fresh perspective.

I guess I'll get my fresh perspective when Kirk is fired or retires.

Sorry.

I guess I automatically equate people hoping style of play changes to getting pissed when it doesn't. I made a leap there based on an assumption.

My bad.

This hire isn't going to cause Iowa to all of a sudden win 10 games a year or win only 4 games a year. It is just confirmation that the trend towards mediocrity will continue.

I really didn't get the initial "OMG Parker outrage". I think it's a message board phenomenon of trendy hate. It goes viral quickly. As much as some of you refuse to believe it, Kirk probably knows more about what he's doing than you would. He's invested family-wise and career-wise in this. Our investment is purely emotional (outside of optional financial). You complain about apathy in the fanbase, but that apathy is a direct result of your "OMG11!! Phil Parker" cynicism. You can criticize Kirk's loyalty to KOK, but if you actually look back at his track record of hiring assistants and coordinators - it's pretty damn good. That includes hiring a defensive coordinator who most Michigan State fans were very apathetic about and saw little upside.

And just for the record, wholesale changes on either side of the ball will piss me off.

I like our pro-style offense but I don't think KOK calls a particularly good game.

I like our base defense but I don't like the the matchups we get. I'd like to see a few more blitzes and nickel/dime packages as situation warrants.

My fear (right or wrong) is that with PP we will see alot of the same packages that only work when we have the LB's to make it work. My perception is that an outside hire would be a new voice for Kirk whereas Phil may continue to run the same defense - even when its not working as well. If he changes a few things then I have absolutely no problem with his hire since his current and former players seem to love him.

it seems to me that i am one of the like 6 people that actually likes our style on both sides.

- we dont recruit the depth of athletes needed to fly all over the field and be ultra aggressive

-we blitzed like 20% of the time last year yet people think it never happens

- we keep people in front of us and force their guys to make plays to beat us

- we try to control the clock on offense and wear down the other team

- we take shots downfield after setting up play action

improvements i would like to see:

-better execution and moving the chains to keep the D off the field

-either recruit more athletic LB's or use more nickel and dime vs certain offenses and situations

-drop the hammer and put teams away

-better special teams across the board like 02-04

i guess i just dont see any huge flaws or reasons for an mass overhaul. i believe that our program has an identity that gives us a bump in recruiting and fan loyalty.

I think if average internet fan had their say, we'd just try and recruit for the spread. Seemingly forgetting that our typical NFL player (and highest recruits) are offensive linemen sold on the pro-style offense and great training for such.

I agree, I like our style of offense. But for whatever reason, some people don't seem to be able to separate style and performance. I said last week I was getting sick of people saying "Don't get excited about KOK leaving, our style won't change."

Shit, there are plenty of teams that run conservative, pro-style offenses. They're just betterat it than us.

Plus its also premature to assume that NOTHING will change. Every assistant at one point thinks to himself "Thats dumb, why are we doing it this way". The good ones even challenge their bosses to try something different. More than 1 ex-player has commented that PP is a good choice and will bring some new looks to the defense.

I think the percentage of fans that actually give a fuck about position coaches and coordinators is pretty small. Most of the fans that I converse with had a very mild interest in the new hires. This is also true of recruiting. They pay attention to the games but all this other stuff is white noise.

I'm less pissed today than I was yesterday. While it's BAU, I have to believe that Parker might want to make his own mark. In any case, just having a DC that's ambulatory is a check in the "plus" column.

I agree with pretty much all of this.

I will say that if we ever switched to a spread faggot offense, I would be going crazy. Fuck that shit.

I'm not disputing this but do you have a link to where it shows this stat. I'd like to know how that compares to the national average.

One thing I want to see changed more than linebackers covering slot WRs, is the 8 yard cushion and the backpedal at the snap. We have some fast, athletic corners who can tackle and this is just silly. Its not like the days of running Adam Shada out there.

Would love to see us jam receivers more often and bring the house on 3rd and 5 or more. Doesn't seem like they ever think of trying this.

I agree. The apathy is somewhat alarming. In particular, the apathy toward wanting better results on the field. Most fans just kind of shrug in the face of a disappointing season (last season, the season before) and say "well, Kirk will turn things around, and even if he doesn't we should be thankful for what we've got."

Iowa has the tradition and the fan/financial support to be consistently better than 7 wins per season. Fans really should demand it.

We're real good at giving the opposing WRs 10 yard cushions on third and 4, I'll give you that.

One thing I'd like to see is running more nickel and dime. If we aren't getting pressure against a spread team anyway, then why not? It would at least make us more difficult to prepare for.

KF isnt a micromanager on playcalling. this comes directly from an ex iowa QB.
