Would really suck if your team was on defense and got called for some bullshit penalty in that scenario.

Even if the strategy is rarely used successfully, taking it away would has a large negative impact because you’re dramatically increasing the amount of time that a game can be definitively unwinnable.
I could see a situation where they take away the kickoff but not the option for an onside kick. It would of course take the surprise kicks out of the equation but still leave the option to keep the possibility of an end of the game comeback in play.
the idea that seems to have traction is that after TDs, a team would have 4th-and-15 or 4th-and-20 at their 30 or 35. they would have the option to punt it (your average net would be the 20 or 25) or go for it (think the conversion rate is like 10-15% which is about the same as an onside kick). you would also even have the fake punt as a surprise onside kick I guess. in theory it's sound although it feels contrived.
It's sports. It's all contrived.

It also sucks when your team is called for some bullshit penalty after successfully recovering an onsides kick.

Whenever this subject comes up (kick/punts/return game) I think of this....

That was the first Iowa game I ever attended and that’s the only play I remember.

I agree that he’ll be successful, but most Nebrantska fans don’t define success the same way we do to their own detriment. It will be interesting to see if they accept mostly 8-10 win seasons (which is good) from Frost better than they did from Pelini. I don’t see them being a serious national contender, at least not more than Iowa occasionally sorta is.

I'm sure there are some crazy people who will never accept that 90s Nebrantska can't happen now, but Frost is a Favorite Son and less of an embarrassing asshole than Pelini so between that and them bottoming out under Riley I think he'll get a lot more leeway. I think he's a really good offensive coach and they still recruit better than the rest of the division for the most part so him getting them somewhere in the range of what Wisconsin or Michigan State have been recently seems like a pretty plausible outcome. I'm definitely not looking forward to watching Iowa play against his teams every year

Good stuff from Brian. Shots fired.

Q: QB back, most of WR and TEs back. Do you see growth? Maybe 3,000 yards passing?

I wouldn't even begin to go down stats road. We just want to throw the ball consistently. We were at 57% last year, not good enough. Have to at least be over 60%. Should we be closer to 3,000 yards? Yeah, I'd like to think so. We have a QB now who is closer to mastering the system. We put a lot on him. We don't look to the sideline. We ask him to think. Not just look to the sideline and see some super cool poster. He has a better view than us, so we ask him to drive the bus.

He also demostrated that he has seen at least one Star War and Iowa reporters were so stunned to hear a Ferentz reference something that isn't the 1970s Pitt Panthers that they all lost their shit.

I was really happy that it was the original to maintain the family gimmick

When it is said and done, Bo Pelini will have been more successful at Nebrantska than Scott Frost.

I’m jazzed about the Jones news, and excited to see him thump people.

Hopefully Mends is a more asskicking Cole Fisher.

Brinks now inside too. Dearth of girth the biggest defensive concern.

I gots to believe that Frost will be better offensively, in game management and in recruiting. Don't know about defensively; not sure what defines great defense when combined with that offense.

I hope and think that offense will be dogshit when the calendar turns to November. The premium on ballhandling depends on digital dexterity and supple balls.

He averaged 9.5 wins per season, so that numerically isn't going to be easy to top especially given what he is starting with, but I think he is going to be a good coach for them.

I doubt you see him getting destroyed and flat out embarrassed like Pelini and Riley did every year in key games. I think at a minimum they are done getting drubbed by points by almost everyone.

48 points to Wisconsin
45 points to Michigan
59 points to Wisconsin
70 points to Wisconsin
63 points to Ohio State
62 points to Ohio State
40 points to Iowa
55 points to a terrible Purdue team
56 points to Ohio State
56 points to Iowa
56 points to Penn State
54 points to Minnesota

That was all in the last 4 or 5 years. They were a joke. It won't be that way anymore.

Not that I disagree but UCF gave up 55 points to Memphis about four months ago.

There's a recent SI article on Frost where he comes across as an oblivious asshole. He shits on everyone who had anything to do with attempting the west coast offense at Nebrantska, as if that were the heart of the problem, and wonders aloud why any coach would do a single thing different than what had been done in the past, as if only a complete dumbfuck wouldn't be able to effortlessly replicate Tom Osborne's results. Of course, when he gets into the specifics of why Nebrantska was successful, he doesn't mention playing in a cupcake 8-team conference, higher scholarship limits, lax PED testing, etc.

The highlight of the interview is this goofball quote where he says something like, "At Oregon I always thought what if we took this and added Husker Power!" Maybe he'll do fine, but holy hell what a meathead.

Kind of interesting that Nebrantska's defense was actually really good before moving to the B10 and then they started having Big 12 style meltdowns. most of their losses during the last two seasons in the Big 12 sound like stereotypical Big Ten games.

15–16
10–31
7–9
12–13
13–20
6–9
20–23
7–19

then they jump to the B10 and weirdly their games sound like the stuff we rag on the B12 for

17–48
25–28
17–45
13–30
30–36
38–63
31–70
31–45

obviously they lost Suh/Amukamara/etc but Pelini had a pretty solid track record as a defense guy, seemed like they would at least always have that going for them.

Cats Illustrated reported last week that Wagner will be taking an official to UK this upcoming weekend.

Based on what we've heard from multiple sources, Kentucky, Louisville, Cincinnati and Akron are major options for Wagner, who is also being recruited by Iowa's football staff.

They were his one confirned football offer in high school right? Fairly close to OH too so that would make sense.

Second to last big XII season was what should have been the Suh Heisman year where they just played dime on almost every down because he was so throughly destroying the opposing front. And then that last year they still had Crick and Lavonte David which is pretty good. I just don't think the defensive recruiting recovered after the move, and they had been built to stop a different style of offense

That and they haven’t had a QB that could throw a spiral since joining the Big 10. It’s hard to hold opponents down when every QB you have likes throwing to the other team.
