Iowa doesn't need a running QB, but a QB that can move around the pocket and isn't a complete stiff would be just fine.

LOL at people that didn't think there was much of a market for him.

The money is crazy and only getting crazier. They must get control of this wihin the year.
How? You can’t limit NIL.

Sure you can, but you have to first set it up like a real professional league with a union and collective bargaining and rules oversight with teeth that isn't the NCAA. That is where it is all headed.

Is there any league that limits NIL money?

As it is currently happening in the NCAA? Absolutely.

Every single league limits and prohibits what is happening now. Any professional team can sign players within the salary cap and per strict league rules. They can't then go and on the side direct some fund to pay that player a bunch of extra money. Players are free to go out and cut any endorsement deal they want on their own, but there are strict rules that the teams can have no role or participation in it and if they do they get absolutely hammered for breaking the rules and player would be ruled ineligible.

NIL for pro leagues works exactly as the NCAA was supposed to. You can go cut endorsement deals, but the school was supposed to have no involvement. The difference is the NCAA has no teeth.

Just hope we have a qb that's not recovering from major ligament damage.

There are rumors that Iowa is trying to get Maalik Murphy in for a visit. He was Dukes QB this year and threw for 26 TDs. Committed to Oregon State a few days ago but hasn’t signed. On3 has him rated as the 4th best QB to enter the portal.
Former Texas Longhorn Signee:

26 TDs in a major conference:

6’5”:

Named “Maalik” with two A’s:

Also, pro leagues have enforceable contracts. Most of the NIL stupidity is bribing guys to transfer. United Airlines can’t just pay Patrick Mahomes $50 million to come to Chicago.

Maalik with two fucking A’s at QB?!?! I’ve never needed a recruit for my wellbeing more than this. Mark me down. I will donate $1k to the NIL if they get this guy.

Correct, and while some pro players choose to sign with bigger market teams for endorsment opportunities, if the NBA gets even a hint that the New York Knicks instructed some fund or a company to tell a free agent that they will get a big endorsment deal the league will null and void that contract as well as fine them and take away draft picks.

Couldn't they? If they wanted to pay him $50 million outside of his pro contract to play in a specific city, who would say no

They could, but it would have to be 1000% free and clear of any involvement or direction with the team, and any such contract would be heavily investigated and scrutinized by the league and likely even discouraged or told no behind the scenes. The other owners would go apeshit as an unfair competitive advantage.

Well like Doug says there’s rules against direct collusion with teams in general, but I meant the every season craziness. Mahomes is under contract with KC and people can’t bribe him to leave.

Without the inducement to transfer a lot of NIL would dry up.

$2 million a year plus for the best QBs available. Pribula to Mizzou for 1.5. Rosters are going to be over $50 maybe $100m by the end of this decade.

Even the schools that can afford it and are currently doing it don't want this shit. Nobody wants this shit. It's unsustainable.

The blue blood programs have as much incentive to stop it as anyone. Coaches want to get back to coaching and the Ohio State / Michigan / Alabama / Texas / Oregon and similar are going to get the best players no matter what, so what is the reason to continue this charade?

Having to endlessly recruit and re-recruit and arrange financial deals sometimes 3-4 times per year is a nightmare.

That's the shit that has to be driving them nuts. You never really know if a kid wants to be at your school. Can't count on anything.

It's going to be interesting to see how it's all navigated, because what they are going to have to attempt and successfully do is find a way to stuff the genie back in the bottle.

The real fight won't be with the players, it's going to be with the agents and especially the big agencies. The biggest sports agencies in the world entered this space and have found a new revenue stream that they won't give up without a fight. WME has an entire team living in Austin and supporting players on the ground. Aurum Sports Agency just got Pribula the deal at Missouri for a reported $1.5m per year along with multiple other players, so they pocket at least $200k per year just from those nothing players at Missouri. Now multiply that all over the country. We know Ohio State alone has a $20m roster and I'm guessing about equal that in outside money and endorsements. If Ohio State is worth $40m per year in salary and endorsements, that means middle-men agents have $4m in potential fees per year and it seems like almost exponentially growing.

It's a fucking goldmine for these scumbags that know what they are doing and there is an endless supply of players and 100+ schools with multiple programs at each where money can be squeezed out.

No chance they go quietly into the night, so they are going to have to find a way to still cut them in or they are going to have to create an air tight new system and lawyer the fuck up to fight this out.

The funny thing to think back on is what the first night of this stupid shit looked like. It went from the clock literally hitting midnight and players announcing you could pay them like $20 to talk over zoom for 15 minutes and telling people to DM them personally if they had a local commercial or endorsement. It was as amateur as it gets. We have multiple pages laughing at where you could pay the McCaffery bros. or Spencer Penus $15 to yell at them after a game.

It took about 2 years for it to go from that innocent player self-managed start to a reality where anyone worth a shit has a slick professional agency that is a division of WME or CAA.

The transfer portal is by far a bigger issue. It’s still hilarious that a couple of years ago the Big Ten said that any accepted scholarship was guaranteed for 4 years and now we have this.

I don’t see any fix until schools break away completely from the NCAA, which might be more difficult than most realize

They are going to need Congress to fix the legal issues. Good luck with that!

Sam Aiello approves this post.
I tutored Sam Aiello. One day I saw him at Walmart. He was buying goldfish to feed to his piranha. I was just there to buy a box of these things called “whales” that cost $1 and they were basically generic goldfish crackers.
