Sounds like it’s either Iowa or the NFL. And the NFL option is a late round (5-7) at best.

We are a nation of grifters.
I know this whole process sucks right now but I think you're taking it a bit too far. If you're a 19-year-old kid and you come from a lower even middle class family and you have no guarantee of going pro, if a school offers you a significant amount of money then how can you not switch? I get it as fans we want everyone to be loyal but if one school says they're going to give you a half a million dollars and you go there, but then another school suddenly says hey we'll give you a million, you're a fool not to do it. Calling them grifter is a bit too far.

Leaving your school, going to another school and taking their money, and then leaving to go back to original school sounds like grifting

And to be honest these schools aren't any more loyal to the athletes than the athletes are to the schools. They bring in these kids to play and promise them a starting position and then suddenly they bring in another player at their same position and then they aren't starting. Some of these kids really believe they can go pro. When a school pulls the rug out from under them like that, what are they supposed to do? I know the bootstrapping fans out there will say they made a commitment and they should just wait their turn, but in the real world it doesn't work that way.

This ain't the kids' fault. The system needs fixed. 500k is life changing money for a kid starting out. I don't blame a kid one bit for flipping suddenly to a new school. If it was my kid I'd encourage it. They're stupid not to.

Sounds like forcing the system to change.

No one is saying the kid is dumb for doing it. They’re saying the system is dumb for not figuring out a solution to the problem. It’s not like there aren’t a dozen professional leagues to model your system after.

The athletes are the last ones that should be blamed. At the top of the list in this debacle is the ncaa, then the coaches, then the collective leaders, and then the agents.

You're right the athletes shouldn't be blamed. This kid just like Kadyn Proctor are probably both really good people who come from great families. I know my family taught me that it's okay to fuck people over if there aren't any rules stopping you.

Lol.

If your kid was in a situation like this, would you expect him to behave more loyally and ethically than the adults? Adults who are making hundreds of thousands if not millions off their labor? If you say yes you're a liar.

Again, why should these kids have to be the adults in the room?

The system sucks. It needs changed. But until then, these athletes need to do what's best for them within the framework of the current system. They're stupid not to. The adults sure are gaming it to their advantage. But, I know, feelings get hurt when a kid commits and leaves a school (the same way coaches do btw).

I believe that once your kid had taken some money from a school that you would view it as their obligation to play at least one season for that school.
I don't think so. Where in the rules does it say they have to? They only get 4 years.

Again, do you expect the athletes to be more loyal and ethical than the coaches, agents, and collective reps? Look at it from the perspective of someone who grew up poor and not from your perspective.

If it's within the rules, it ain't grifting. Grab what you can.

(and they should be University employees with collective bargaining. Let some of these dudes play until they're 30 if they want.)

Again, it shouldn’t require not require a rule to do the right thing.

Don’t take money if you want to be able to walk without people calling you a grifter.

we need to go back to calling people sellouts. not just a sports thing - actors, writers, musicians, etc used to fear selling out. now fans do this weird “yass get that bag!” thing.

there is nothing wrong with trying to get your maximum worth, we just need to be clear that it is selling out and selling out needs to be uncool again. bring back celebrities filming commercials in Japan because they fear being sellouts.

Taking money from a school you are not going to play for is wrong. Period. Regardless of how stupid the system is. You want to transfer, fine. Take your money from the new school, not the one you are leaving.

I grew up poor white trash, but despite that I still hope I can teach my kid morals. There are a lot of unethical but not illegal ways to make money, doesn’t mean that’s what you should do.

not great, but I’m fine without having 66%+ of our WRs on the field at any moment being white. poor branding. not even BYU does that. and vanderzee will be out there most snaps.

Yes- any player taking money from a school without playing is wrong.

Really not that difficult.

Has HaMo the White been compromised Mama the Big? Because it’s clearly the right thing to do - and probably a term of most NIL contracts - to give the money back if you get more and go elsewhere. That said, I’m fine taking more elsewhere unless and until the sport gets its shit together.

That kid specifically is a grifter. Your guy Proctor is a grifter.

I don't know, we could all do lots of things that we could legally get away with to make more money or take advantage of people, but something about honor and decency and keeping your word seems like it should mean something on some level.

I'm the one on here encouraging Josh Dix and Owen Freeman to go get paid next year. I have no problem with it, but you don't go get paid and then back out 5 seconds later and keep the money to go then get more money somewhere else.

Imagine that we were talking about an employment situation rather than college athletics. Suppose that your kid agreed to go to work for Company X, with Company X agreeing to a sign-on bonus which they paid out prior to the employee’s start date.

Would anyone here encourage their child to go ahead and take another job offer, never showing up for work at Company X and not returning the sign-on bonus cash? I think not.

I don't care how poor you are, if you are the kid/family that goes out on trick or treat night and dumps the whole bowl into your bag and runs away you are a fucking piece of shit.

It shouldn’t require a rule to do the right thing.

I understand flipping up to the point where you take a school’s money. Hold off on that if you want the freedom to take a better offer later.
Would you hire an employee at 100k a year and give them their entire salary up front? With no legal stipulations? Of course you wouldn't.

How many times have we seen a kid commit to a school, and then the school brings in another kid at the exact same position? I'm sure promises were made to the original kid.

Again, do you expect the players to be more ethical than the coaches, agents, and collective reps? Haven't we heard stories of collectives not fulfilling their promises? Agents are reportedly taking 10-20% for being the intermediary in these deals, and they are fucking bullshit artists and thieves.

I get what you are saying. But this shit needs to change, and it's going to take these types of situations to inspire that change. Until it does, why should the player be the ones who are expected to play nice? I mean I know why (fans), but fuck that. Fix the fucking problem.

I don't know what that means.
