Who gives a shit, there are plenty of scholarships. Austin fucking Ash (Doug’s favorite player ever) got a scholarship and you guys are worried about this dude?
do you think Gary Sarnoff liked me hanging around the super shooters locker room?

Never mind, don’t answer that

Nah, he can’t pass on the luxury of having someone running the scout team offense exactly how he wants.

If you can't be outraged that first team all state basketball player Peyton McCollum is the 13th guy off the bench for Iowa, I dont know what to say
He got that first team all state recognition the same way he got this scholarship…daddy’s last name

Fuck that.

How many times do we have to see a coach set himself up for failure due to this shit? Even letting them walk on is a danger. You're a couple injuries or a transfer away from telling your eldest born son to tear off that warmup and get in the game. It's bad enough as a walk-on, but now you put him on full scholarship and there is extra pressure to play him or you have to face cries and questions and think you have to justify his scholarship with playing time.
I get where you are coming from. I doubt that he plays that much at all. If he plays and sucks, I’ll be right there with you. But it’s a bit like having trust issues with your new girlfriend because your last one cheated on you. I trust McCollum until I don’t.

This was a poor decision by Ben, plain and simple. There is no upside. Whether he plays or not is surpassed by the impact on the locker room imo. Everyone will be all smiles and on board initially, but wait until the honeymoon wears off.

I hope he gets challenged by fans and reporters on this decision and his kid moves on after this first year.

My concern isn’t his last name or who his dad is. It’s the Waukee stench I can’t get over.

That's a bit overboard. It's fine to bitch and moan in this thread, but wanting fans and reporters to "challenge" him to the point the kid gets upset and moves on is stupid and too much.

I don't get the mixing of business and family either. I had it asked of me if I would get my brother in law a job and if I considered getting my teenage daughter a job or internship along with a few other friends inquiring about jobs at the corporate level.

I said absolutely fucking not to all of them. The last thing I want to do is play middle man or be responsible for nepotism if something goes wrong. There are plenty of other companies out there, go work for someone else. I don't hire friends of friends or family.

McCollum should have told his kid to go play at Coe.

Also, from the kid's perspective, get away from your family, your comfort zone, and figure shit out on your own to a certain degree.

There is no reason to GET PISSED! until he logs meaningful minutes undeservedly.
This is correct. Instead of knee-jerking this thing, let's wait until the kid gets out on the court and it's obvious he has no meaningful basketball skills deserving of a scholarship. Then we can get pissed.

What's the point of being wildly successful if you can't use your stature to enrich and give opportunity to family and friends they haven't earned.

In a rare moment of optimism, I'll note that Stirtz had no D1 offers, either.

Work your magic, Ben.

That would be true if he was a PWO like everyone expected. If he's using a scholarship keeping them from adding a mid season transfer, or future recruit, I'd say the time is now.
You get 15 roster spots and 15 scholarships. You can have walk ons if you want but for roster makeup it’s the same thing.

I wish he wasn’t going this route but it’s not preventing them from doing anything. No one is going to be able to keep 15 actual scholarship players year over year. Could barely do it with 13.

It was unavoidable it seems. The top 2 coaching candidates both have sons that would have immediately been on the team.
One is a top player in the country. The other has offers from Central (I don't know if Central actually offered...they may not have).

There's a younger brother as well, so we have that going for us.

I wonder if he can get his wife a job in the athletic office. Maybe his super-fan brother can be the video coordinator. Mom can get a spot in athletics fundraising. Let's just grift the entire family into the equation!
