Even the left overs in the portal are a known commodity and won’t require money. If your choice is a random high school receiver from Colorado or a guy that had 22 receptions for 320 yards for Georgia Tech last year, you’ll be better off with the guy from Georgia Tech.
We would kill for that guy

I'm guessing the norm for most college coaches going forward is that they try to completely disconnect from May 16th until mid-July. After that, you get no break until at least the first week of February. Take a 6 week break and then do the spring ball and spring transfer portal.

Rinse. Repeat.

You can see why the NFL lifestyle might appeal a lot more to coaches going forward.
Not even sure that's possible. New kids enroll in June. Big recruiting time starts in June.

No one cares, but I think I might check out of this thread.

99% of it is going to be a bunch of shitty rumours and speculation.

Iowa "sources" are almost always fuckin wrong anyway

College coaches probably longing for the days where the thing they had to bitch and moan about was the booster circuit, shaking hands, playing golf.

I can't imagine it remaining like this. The people running things will figure out how much it sucks and is ruining the game. Consensus will be achieved in a smoke filled back room. Order will be restored.

I choose to believe this.

The sad and extremely stupid thing is that nearly all of this madness could have been prevented. There is one thing truly driving the chaos of it, and that isn't the NIL money, it is the immediate eligibility rule change.

If they had kept that in and players had to sit a year, then about 75% of the transfers that are happening wouldn't happen.

You know, I was about to post about how they could say fuck it and don't have to do that anymore, but they likely need to do it even more than ever. Not for the University this time, but every speech from Kirk and Fran to I-Club donors is likely going to turn into an NIL speech now.

They are going to spend a bunch of their free time traveling around and trying to convince Earl and Myrtle to give their donation to the Iowa Swarm so they can pay for a new LB.

I also highly doubt they envisioned schools forming collectives. They assumed Millers Meat Market would pay Freddy Fat Ass Offensive Lineman to advertise for him, Freddy would get a couple steaks and a check.

I have no idea how the put the genie back in the bottle now though. They will have court case after court case on their hands.

Holy shit how far we have come from this movie and speech to today. It's like we are on a different planet.

Kirk filmed a commercial with the Swarm recently that will start to air at the end of the week. I can’t believe I just typed that.

Blue Chips should now be called BluePrint. It's fucking bizarre listening to that. It's literally the outline to what you have to do now.

Happy the Booster is now the hero and old coach Nolte is the villain.

I'd like Jacobs to stay but I don't see Iowa allocating a lot of NIL $ to a guy not healthy enough to finish his last two seasons.

Seriously? They'd have to be the biggest retards in the world to not realize this. Phil knightand Oregon was first thing that came to my mind.

Of course, but that’s no different than before. A player like Jestin Jacobs with a starting spot locked up wasn’t likely to leave Iowa for Oregon 4 years ago because it would set off red flags.

I think that ultimately the unintended consequence of this will be to hurt a lot of kids too. By turning this into a pure pay for play operation, there's going to be less loyalty. Most respectable schools have historically kept kids on scholly who don't play, get injured, etc. They did that to protect their reputations.

Now, it's going to be more like Prime's speech today. Injured? Not good enough? Sorry. Now GTFO! I got money to pay someone who can.

I think that part of it will grate on the Kirk's of the world.

It’s an abject disaster that could absolutely have been avoided.

The big schools have to break from the NCAA. That model will never have enforceable, sane rules ever again.

This is a can of worms that remains better unopened. The unintended list of consequences will be long.

I don't think folks here are looking bigger picture. Everyone here is thinking podunk Iowa athletes advertising for a car dealership.

What about Oregon and Phil Knight? Are they going to regulate how companies like Nike can offer advertising deals to colleges/students?

I know it's hyperbolic but the implications from these decisions could very well lead to death of college athletics as we know. We were likely already headed in that direction, this will hasten it, imo.

College athletes are "paid" with a free education (free everything pretty much) . I don't know why that can't be enough.
This has been the easiest thing in the world to predict.

The signing period starts in 16 days. Almost every single one of these players has to pick a school by then. It is going to be a mad dash to get them to visit this weekend so the moment you see a visit lined up that’s basically the school.

After that it’s going to be like marrying someone after dating them for a month. I would guess 40% of them are back in the portal next year.
Only 40% of them will end up playing D1 next year

I want to hate all of this and then I remember that it might be the only thing standing in the way of a Padilla/Labia battle next fall and Gavin Williams fair-catching kickoffs at the 35.

Just the change to the transfer rules has created a shit show on it's own. But add NIL to the equation and it's fucking gross. Schools without a large alumni base or at least a handful of obscenely wealthy alums are completely fucked. They'll still get their 2/3 star types via conventional recruiting but the minute those players improve their stock, they're going to transfer out and get paid.

If there's one thing that might cause Kirk to leave before his contract expires, it's this.

yeah, I’m contemplating whether fan passion will decline in time over it. I mean most of them will never sniff the NFL so the vast majority are just minor leaguers now. Before there was the illusion of a different construct, though we all knew bags of cash were delivered to Uncle Pete’s porch. But we could pretend.
Idk, maybe it’ll be like the English soccer tiers in the sense even the teams in the lower tiers have passionate fan bases.

Sort of fucked up that "college" athletes will face greater earning restrictions when they turn pro.

Doesn't matter, anyone who tried to speak up at the beginning was shouted down as they hate the poor lil ole D1 athletes and their inability to make side cash in addition to their mountains of scholarship money and benefits.

I often have trouble processing paradigm shifts, but it seems dumb to affiliate these players with a “school” anymore. What’s the point? It’s absurd. “Yes, we’re paying him $3m/yr but he’s outta here if he doesn’t get that Econ grade up.”

the cognitive dissonance, it burns us!

When's the last time you remember someone ineligible for grades?

Been years for me. Remember bohannon talking about having to buckle down to be eligible to come back, but he was able to do it fairly easily and he had flat out stopped going to class.

Purdue's best WR returning from the 2021 team was academically ineligible.

That being said, with all the tutoring help and assistance from admin and professors most schools give D1 athletes, you have to be a window-licking retard to fail.
