"Spanning the past 14 games, during which the Hawkeyes are 7-7, Iowa quarterbacks have attempted 15 passes from inside the opponent’s 10-yard line. They have seven completions and one touchdown, which took place in the waning seconds of a 27-14 loss to Michigan on a 5-yard route from quarterback Spencer Petras to tight end Luke Lachey. But the head-shaking statistic is that Iowa’s seven completions during that 14-game period have totaled 3 yards.

It sounds almost impossible, yet it’s completely true. In six games this year, Iowa is 4-of-5 passing from inside the 10 for 5 yards. Along with Lachey’s touchdown catch, the other completions included a shovel pass that lost 1 yard against Illinois and a pair of short flat routes against Michigan that totaled 1 yard.

This year’s numbers align with the final eight games from 2021. From inside the 10-yard line, there were three completions for minus-2 yards. A slant route gained 4 yards, an out picked up 1 yard and an outlet to a running back lost 7.

Perhaps even more telling than the total yardage is the ball location. Only four of those 15 attempts were thrown into the end zone, and just one this year — Lachey’s catch — which was placed at the goal line. In the final eight games last year, only three attempts landed in the end zone, and all were incomplete."

I know Spence is an easy & deserving punching bag but the more you watch this OL the more I actually think they might be equally as bad. Small, slow and just bad at football.

Beau Stevens might be the worst starter I’ve seen in Kirks tenure. I’m not sure he knows what football is.

Didn’t Kirk say that it’s by design that we don’t throw into the end zone? I they they have zero confidence in our shitty WR crew.

Does this data qualify as “metrics”?

Q. How would you evaluate Spencer Petras after six weeks?

KIRK FERENTZ: He's done a good job handling the circumstances. That's really going back to the evaluation question. That's how we do it. We try to be realistic about what the picture looks like and then make a fair assessment. He's done a lot of good things. I think he's improved, gained confidence, as crazy as that may sound. I think he's doing a lot of good things out there. We just need to get better collectively offense level. That's my encouragement.
I was pretty sure before but now I'm fully confident that this staff has not a fucking clue how to evaluate or develop Quarterbacks. Hire an actual fucking QB coach for fucks sake. Start there.

“We had some of that in this game plan,” Kirk’s son, Brian Ferentz said, “But there’s no way I’m calling that on fourth-and-1. There’s no way. Because what I’m thinking about if it’s fourth-and-1, I’m thinking about players, not plays. I’m thinking about risk versus reward.
….

“One thing you don’t want to do is go backwards and knock yourself out of field-goal position,” Kirk Ferentz said. “I’m thinking about a play in our last game where we had a short completion where it would have been inside the 20, potential field goal, touchdown situation and we couldn’t complete the pass. So those are the things, going back to the original question, those are the things that we’ve got to get corrected, or at least hopefully get corrected.”

Wasn't he a 4 star recruit? Feels like most of the guys starting on the OL other than Dejong we're early priority recruits. The poor recruiting and development during the Polasek years hurts worse than I thought it would. Seeing Alaric Jackson play well in the NFL after small improvement over the years at Iowa has been a bit eye opening. Wirfs and Linderbaum would have been 1st round picks with any coach. Polasek sucked, but Kirk should have known this developmental gap was coming after the past few years.

I think Jackson discovering that meat is a key menu ingredient for an OT also played into his success.

In reading his comments about Spencer sucking I think he did and he blames that for Spencer’s struggles. I think he often has an oddly fixed mindset on this sort of thing that interferes with finding active solutions(portal). That fixed mindset has been awfully successful over the years so I get why he has it, puts the mental in developmental in a variety of ways.

There were several 4*busts/drop outs on the O-line over the past 2-3 years.

Did Polasek suck though? My take is he was severely hobbled by Kirk. He was a former QB and the OC coordinator and RB coach at NDSU when they beat us. Kirk liked the offense, especially the run game, so he brought him in. But instead of being the QB coach and OC, he stuck him at OL, so he could put Brian in those positions, also out of his expertise. Kirk did this. I would venture our results and offensive production would have been much better if those two individuals were in opposite positions. Funny that Polasek is now back to being an OC and QB coach at Wyoming.

This is one of those places where Kirk’s own, stated philosophy is diametrically opposed to Spencer Petras continuing to take every single snap under center for Iowa. No QB in the entirety of the Ferentz era has taken more boneheaded sacks , taking the offense out of FG range…than Spencer. Not one. He leads that category by a fucking mile. I think he had (3) of those Vs Iowa State alone in 2021
